DLC18 discussion and predictions

If they do anymore, I'd be fine with like one or two more after this next one, but honestly, I'd be fine waiting 2-3 years for a sequel. I've been thinking about how good the lighting and pathing is in PC2 (and of course all the basic improvements and optimizations and what not), and if PZ2 was just PZ1 on the new engine with nothing new, I'd probably be fine with that

I definitely see everyone's points, but there is also logic in thinking that support will continue.

Here are some things the report tells us:

  • PZ is their second highest performer financially (pp9,10,11 and others)
  • PZ and JWE2 make up 62% of financial revenue for the company (p11)
  • This is up from 58% last year (p11). Revenue as a percentage is growing for these games.
  • The report describes this revenue as being boosted by PDLC (p9)

It's highly profitable for them to continue, so why wouldn't they? Splitting people's time across products that are making them the most money now, and that have the potential for the most money in the future is a strategy that makes sense. They are currently recruiting for skilled roles on their website so I think they are resourcing themselves to be able to do this.

I know we've been round this time and time again so I won't keep hammering on about it. I'll just say one last time in this particular thread that I don't think this is the last DLC. I think we've got a few more packs to come, covering Rainforests and the Americas at least. Maybe after that a Safari scenery pack or that anticipated final collection pack.
There is also the fact that other than builders (and even then not all of them) PZ and PC users base is not an exact overlap so is not like all of us Will automatically move to PC because PZ ended support. I for example won't play PC since is not something that interest me much.

But on the other hand they may want to focus dev resources into the PZ sequel with the new mechanics and tools we saw in the PC trailer and featurettes. I personally would like a new versión of PZ with those new features, i just don't want to have to wait another 5 years to get the selection of animals we now have. That's the annoying part. I wish they would just update the current Game engine to incorpórate all that new path system and pool mechanics and stuff but that is also very resource and monkey consuming but also Will probably break everyone's game and saves.

I see your logic. But it's worth noting that the growth in Planet Zoo this year was largely due to console and they won't see such a strong benefit from that next year (and will, quite honestly, see a dip in sales).

The reality is that if they stop development the games will still sell decently because of the back-catalog of DLCs and it will net them more profit because they're putting minimal resources into it. Meanwhile, they can sell another 1-million plus units of PlanCo2 in two months that will undoubtedly net them even more profit because people buy at the standard price rather than on-sale. Same for any DLC they release for that game.

If they have a way to keep Planet Zoo PDLC profitable while developing two new games then yeah, they could (and should!) do that. But from what we've seen over the last few years, with the PZ team shrinking, the decrease in output this year alone, and so on... It feels more likely that they'll stop Planet Zoo and focus on the two new games.

Well, agree to disagree :) I hope I'm right and you're wrong, haha! But I am an eternal optimist and I'm usually wrong on here so, don't take my word for anything!

We can pick this up again in the DLC20 speculation thread 🤭
I'm having a hard time articulating it, but basically, the way the numbers work? It's possible for Planet Zoo to be profitable but for two other things to be even more profitable in the long-run even if they cost more for them overall.

All that said? I truly truly hope that you are right! I want to be wrong in this case. :ROFLMAO:

Let's skip the DLC19 thread and go straight for DLC20, as it's a cooler number
Be the change you wish to see in the world. Start that thread right on up!

I don't want to be even more annoying on here than I already am, but also I do NOT want to open this site every day to like 100+ notifications, as I won't see any of my followed threads

It's just hard to tell either way. We see graphics and information that are a culmination of a bunch of financial data and we try to draw conclusions based on that but we've peanuts to go on really. There's tons of questions that need an answering that will be the defining factor for more DLC that we as outsiders just have no answers to.

Is their profit sustainable? What are their projections for PC2? What are their projections for Planet Zoo console? What does it cost them to develop a DLC? Are these costs going up (because people get raises) or are they staying the same? Do they still have enough capacity for it (keeping in mind that recruiting new people takes time and integrating them in your team before they become profitable also takes time)? What technical limitations are they facing? Etc. etc. etc.

There's so many questions, so many different things, reasons, arguments, factors that will be deciding for the continuation of Planet Zoo; much much much more than profit alone. And we've got none of the answers to that. We can make some educated guesses, but even those will forever be guesses.

My two cents: I tend to shy away from the financial arguments for either more or no more DLC in the future. Because we just do not have enough data and information at hand to make any statements that are not an oversimplification of the reality that Frontier faces and will use in their decision making. And it stops us from having a nuanced discussion on this thing that is inevitably going to happen. Something we shouldn't be sad or mad about, something that we can embrace. And the better prepared we are for it, the less it's going to hurt.

There's only one thing I'm completely sure of. Once Planet Zoo ends, there's going to be tons of people who say that they ended it too early and that it made no sense for them to do so; but in the end, Frontier would only have done it when it made sense to do so.

Communication mess is a daily bread for Frontier now. PZ is on two platforms releasing different things on the same time. People who are not hardcore fans as us have no idea what it’s going on. Why do they have to wait for DLC’s we are receiving this year. They don’t understand when and why. Releasing different things for the same game on different platforms in different times is very messy and creates misunderstandings. Console people still have no idea when they will be able to buy barnyard and how.
Before I got here, I thought the Barnyard pack was gonna be in May

What? No way, I have a hard time believing that

Me in 2 months: BREAK DOWN FRONTIER'S GATES. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!

The lack of extra teaser info has actually convinced me that it's a Highlands animal pack. Still assuming the reveal is tomorrow to coincide with World Animal Day, the fact that we're still going off three animals which all live on rocky terrain on a misty blue background, and the potential viability of looping one more dictionary animal (the tree kangaroo) into it.
Yeah and this Highland pack will definitely give me some cool birds and waterfowl too, while also showing off the mountain ranges from around the world.
