Elite Dangerous Odyssey - too many game breaking bugs

UPDATE: reposting this because it was removed due to swearing. All swearing removed!

I just came back to Elite Dangerous after 3 years because I didn't bother with Odyssey at launch since it was a buggy mess. I decided to pick up the DLC for $5 on sale and boy oh boy, do I regret that decision.

I don't know if this is due to the recent update aka "ascendency" or just the state of things in Elite. let's start shall we

1. ridiculously long hyperspace jumps between star systems. The loading times vary between 30 seconds to 2 mins and in rare occasion you get the black adder error. I know this was not the case in Horizon. How can anyone enjoy exploration like that?

2. Board / Disembark ship loading screen hangs (not always) or take long time until you are on foot or inside ship. workaround: exit to main menu and re-log

3. Trying to buy mats from a bartender on a FC always gives you "transaction error" (I guarantee that you will NEVER get a transaction error if you try to buy a ship with real money, oh yea, that will 100% work just like in Scam Citizen). I literally spent an hour to find a FC that sells what I need just to get slapped with this error! supper annoying

4. All settlements are empty of loot. Drawers are empty, locked ones are empty as well. All cache and container empty. Right now there is ZERO point to raid a settlement because it ain't gonna give you squat

5. Game client will freeze when trying to quit to desktop. It happens every single time now, and it doesn't matter if you first exit to main menu. It will always freeze. The only resolution is to kill the process or open steam and stop the game.

overall, I feel I came back in a very bad time or maybe this is normal and people just learned to live with this buggy mess of a "live service" game.

not enjoying elite right now, even tho I kinda dig the on foot content but it's too frustrating to deal with all those bugs.

Indeed, I'd agree with that.

Ascendancy brought back a lot of players, I'd guess many more than FD considered, so the system is creaking badly until the next patch or two.

Bartender & EDO empty lockers have happened since the update too, normally both have been very reliable for quite a long time.

Even in morning (UK) play, when most of the world isn't playing, I'm seeing long jump times, so it seems we all need to be patient, for a while!

I have been hopping around doing some exploring earlier and jump times weren't bad at all. I just scheduled a carrier jump and it was estimated at 51 min which is a bit of a wait (about 2000ly from bubble).

Oh.

Yeah.

But... there's reasons.

1) long times due to those systems your trying to jump into have alot of player traffic..so many folks come back inc yourself (Op) so servers are struggling a bit. It'll ease off as the latest patch novelty wears thin.

2) never had that.

3) nor that.

4) now that's something I do get. When you land at a settlement (odyssey) you do your thing... and then take off, and come back. If you just relog from the planets surface it'll do that. Have to leave the atmosphere and re-enter.
5) yup sometimes it does take its time to get back to desktop. Nothing a ctrl, alt, del, won't sort out.
6) oh no no6.
Hey at least it works! Unlike that other game that robs you and all it's gameplay loops are broke.

Takes time for a patch of this magnitude to bed in.

Jumping my FC at around 8:30 this morning was the 'normal' 15 minutes.
Same with Hyperspace jumps - not particularly long. But by 10-ish the Braben tunnels were starting to get long. Not at the level they were last night when I was doing 27 jumps to get back to the FC to refuel it, they were well over a minute each.

2 is very rare. 3, well I only tried it with one FC, then asked on Reddit and everyone confirmed FC bartender is broken so I figured this is another known bug.

I think last time I waited like 2 or 3 mins before I gave up and killed the process. maybe I'll just wait longer next time just to see if it eventually terminates.

This is probably a single bug with the inventory that causes at least 3 things to break: FC Bartenders, Transferring items to carriers, engineering.

Not sure if the no loot spawn stuff is also due to this or of it's something different, I've avoided odyssey stuff because I can't clear out my inventory and the one time I did loot happened to spawn in, but I've heard many reports of it being broken.

The rest of the bugs are intermittent/rare, but there's probably a few more bugs with similar frequency and severity and after Ascendancy it's definitely gotten to the point where an average player is at least somewhat likely to encounter at least one of those per session.

You seem to be new here...

The September (?) 2019 update, the one that introduced arx and free arx gains for various in-game activities broke the game in a such bad manner that even the big head of Fdev Coms popped on the forums to promise they will be more focused on bugs with next updates.
And we all seen how it went with Odyssey :D

IMO the Ascendancy bugs are inline with the last series of updates and i expect some fixed in the following weeks, although nothing is really game breaking

IN the meantime you can play something else if you cannot cope (however, i really doubt 4 is an issue unless you crash/relog in the settlement then it's normal)

People don’t some dislike it so much they complain about it on the forums, but it has only been this bad since the update.

2. Board / Disembark ship loading screen hangs (not always) or take long time until you are on foot or inside ship. workaround: exit to main menu and re-log
Again for most not a common problem until the update and probably has the same cause.

3. Trying to buy mats from a bartender on a FC always gives you "transaction error" (I guarantee that you will NEVER get a transaction error if you try to buy a ship with real money, oh yea, that will 100% work just like in Scam Citizen). Never experienced this as I don’t bother with that fraction of the game but according to the forums one or more bugs possibly with work arounds are to blame.

4. All settlements are empty of loot. Drawers are empty, locked ones are empty as well. All cache and container empty. Right now there is ZERO point to raid a settlement because it ain't gonna give you squat
Again not something that I bother playing but I have read changes due to PP2 are involved.

5. Game client will freeze when trying to quit to desktop. It happens every single time now, and it doesn't matter if you first exit to main menu. It will always freeze. The only resolution is to kill the process or open steam and stop the game.
This is something I have encountered for some time but it happens to others a lot and has been around intermittently for ages.

As has been said you have picked a bad time to come back and experience the game at its smoothest.

However items 1 & 2 are quite possibly down to the increased load due to lots of returning players and higher levels of activity following the update so you are a small part of the problem.

People playing the game is not the problem. Frontier is responsible for not beefing up the servers to handle the increase in business. The whole point of improving the game is to generate revenue. The more who play, the more who pay.

Firstly, this.
It's been happening to me, on and off, for years but now I always just get a black screen that remains for longer than my patience and then I have to task-kill ED.

In general...

There's been a big update and everything is suffering as a result of the spike in player numbers, as well as the inevitable bugs that come with an update.

Everybody praises NMS for the way Hello turned it around after a disasterous launch.
To be fair, the launch of Odyssey might qualify as a similar thing. It was awful at launch (added to which, there was the palava over ending support for consoles and the Horizons version of the game) but FDev have done a fairly decent job of smoothing it all out.

I've barely touched Odyssey but I get the impression outposts are mostly about mission-related content.
That is to say, the various outposts contain all the stuff you need to complete a related mission and not much else.
Sure, there are surface POIs that have some loot but it's not like a "real" FPS/RPG, where you can just loot any location and get a load of valuable or useful stuff.

On the bright side, FDev have finally conceded that people will always find ways to grind engineering mat's and they recently changed the game so everything that previously gave you a handful of mat's now gives you heaps of them, so engineering your ship is easy.
Also, there's 4 new ships, one of which is already available for in-game credits. Two can be bought for Arx and will be available for credits after 3 months.
The fourth new ship, still to be released, is a new Cobra and looks flipping epic.

At the end of the day, if you want to fly pretend spaceships, ED is still the best way to do it.

Wheeeeeeeeeeee! :D:D:D

For anyone not playing ED while the bugs are ironed out I’ll soon be releasing my new game “Forum Complaint Simulator”. All the fun of the forums without the need to actually play ED. It’ll be free to play although I may introduce a small charge for the “Elite is Dead” and “Ship Interiors” DLC when they’re released.
