Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I don't think anyone believes that - even CiG say it's not coming until 2026. And they're usually too optimistic.

Yet we had people proclaiming both here and elsewhere that SQ42 was surely coming in 2022 or 2020.

Its kind of understandable though. I mean, what type of incompetent nincompoop would announce a game as being almost ready for release in 2014 and then still need more than another decade to release it?

SQ42 has always had this stable release date of NOW + 2 YEARS.
lol so a bit like nuclear fusion reactors then? for as long as i can remember they have been 40 years away.

(for the record unlike most here i do believe both S42 and SC will launch eventually in some form, albeit not the 100 system magnum opus best everything game ever that many are hoping for.)

The reactors are already there, it is just that they are net negative in energy production :D

I mean, in some form, it is already released. The only thing that is keeping it in alpha is CI's refusal to take ownership of their own incompetence / business model and support it like a real company, instead of using excuses.

(EDIT: I just realised - there is no difference between their seeming incompetence and their business model, they are the same thing)

The same goes for SC. It is already released (in early access), it is just extremely crappy and bad. The term “Alpha”, after 12+ years, is meaningless. It’s just a way for CIG to bamboozle players and prospective buyers into rationalizing how crappy the game still is after all this wasted time and money.

But what does "launched" mean for SC? At some point they will simply draw a line and call whatever the current state of the game is, "1.0." It won't come with a sudden leap in the game loops, content or stability. So it may well happen, but not until the funding has mostly dried up and the upper management wants to cut itself loose.

S42 is more interesting because if it does appear, with no "alpha" to hide behind, and gets mauled in reviews (likely), CIG will have a lot of explaining to do. Which is why they're in no hurry as long as they're still making money hand over fist.

its certainly an interesting topic..... i cant say what it means for anyone else but for me it means (approaching) stability - i can live with some bugs, it sadly is the way of modern gaming esp on PC....... but more importantly an end to account wipes such that what i earn in game is on my account until the game dies.

i cant be doing with wipes where i lose my stuff........... even more so when whales get to keep what they bought with cash.
(its an aside but................ a recent game launched on PC, cant remember the name but the teenager in me was very appreciative of the character models in the game ;) ) and visually it was nice, mechanically it played well......... then i learned it has account wipes 3 or 4 times a year.

any and all interest i had in the game (and i was quite happy with it) completely went instantly and i have not started it since. often i go months without touching a game - its been 3 months since playing elite for instance.

games which have wipes mean i will never get beyond the starting gates. so that is what launch of SC means to me

As games get more complex, and players expect more and more from their games, then there will always be bugs, but I think we need to push back on it all being about greedy publishers and that all gaming is like this and that companies just keep releasing the same games over and over - all arguments people use to point to the gaming industry and then claim CIG are doing it different, they are better, when there is no evidence to support this.

There are also many games out there that do release in a decent state and have good devs and good publishers. Larian and BG3 is a very well-known example, but there are many others.

It really is not. Although that is what CIG would like us to dream on, what “1.0” can be. Such useless speculations will keep prospective buyers interested and grey market / money launderers in business.

The reality is that the game is already released, and it is quite crappy. In early access with zero guarantees of getting any significant improvements going forward, 1.0 or not.

In fact the game is arguably more broken now that it has been in the past 10 years, and it is getting compoundingly more broken as CIG adds in more broken stuff on top.

i am not defending CIG at all in this...... but it was obvious it was gonna happen the moment the internet became a thing, and it was easy to roll out fixes.
back in the day it would cost a fortune for a company to release a fix, so they had to get it right.

i remember having to post my game disk of MSR back to Sega due to them screwing up Metropolis Streen Racer, it was massive news at the time and must have cost a fortune in postage alone, let alone the reprinting the GDROM etc, and lets be honest, Elite 3 1st encounters never really recovered from its launch.

yes some do do it better than others, but IME games nowadays release with (sometime humdingers) of bugs with the view of "lets get it out and hopefully fix it later". I doubt they would admit to knowing about the bugs in advance, but some seem so obvious that it is hard to believe they really did not know about them and didnt just release anyway.

over 4000 pages on this forum, a lot of them about the state of the game and its development rather than actually playing the game says otherwise ;)
True :) but “1.0” is here with us already. It is a non issue. We can laugh or cry at the developer efforts to salvage the dumpster fire and to squeeze a few more hundreds millions from buyers or investors for another 4000 pages but the game is already released.

Not saying we are doing that here, but indulging in discussing a mythical or ideal 1.0, given the disgraceful state of SC after all these years, only benefits CIG and grey market speculators or money launderers.
