Elite Dangerous | Ascendancy Update 1 - Thursday 21st November

I don't want to sound totally negative (again) ... but I expected better from a 30-year-old games dev company with a 10-year-old game that's the 4th game in a 40-year-old IP franchise.

Am I being unreasonable?

I mean if you're talking about their infrastructure creaking and breaking under the stampede of logins on a game update, "unreasonable" maybe not, "unrealistic" definitely given the number of times you've seen this.

(My guess would be the underlying issue is a variety of Thundering Herd and probably indicates a bottleneck in their dataflow rather than a lack of AWS instances.)

Read up on this fellow for further insight!

Elite is considerably more complicated than the other games that you've mentioned in your following post. That's why, I think, it is so great.
It's kind of worth the hassle for the results, I think.

How many times of updates going this poorly does it take before Frontier improve how they deliver updates and handle increased logins?

We're not talking about a bakery that makes a cake suddenly 100x the number of people want to buy compared to yesterday and can't meet demand.

Ageed - its very annoying for explorers, however as it doesn't affect PP merits, Im not hopefull for a fix anytime soon :(
To be fair it is annoying for anyone not doing single jumps using the Nav Panel, which might include PPers even if it doesn’t directly affect how many merits they can grind it might affect how fast they can do it.

Well if u knew anything about server infrastructure, you might realize opening the door wider requires making the stores capacity smaller to continue your analogy

I have no idea about the other games, although I suspect the rose-coloured glasses are on WRT them also...
So, you are suggesting that NMS was perfect when released, and that every update has been flawless? (I've only had NMS 8 years, and memory serves that even the 1st update adding Vulkan was bugged to eternity & back)
I was talking from a purely delivery of updates point of view, not initial release.

I will admit I know nothing about games development and server infrastructure. if I did, I'd have more money than I do now.
Frontier DO KNOW about that stuff though, it's literally their job.
If I was poor at my job, my boss would call me in to talk about it. Then there'd be re-training if I continued to be poor at my job. Then there'd be company disicpline procedure, then I'd be unemployed. Yet people give Frontier a pass time and time again? I expect better from Frontier. It's not like they are new to doing this (making games).

Nicely selective, and I did make a point of mentioning an update I had experienced - but never mind, if FD put the game back into maintenence mode again, there would be more complaining from a few that they aren't making any updates...
Not selective at all, the discussion was about the update, not everything from Elite Dangerous's release from 10 years ago to now.

So just for your benefit Rat Catcher, first the big bang happened .......

Egosoft can manage it ... to name one company.

Hello Games can do it for No Man's Sky

Mojang can do it for Minecraft
