Really sad Cobra mkv will be small :(

I was so excited to see the cobra as an alternative to the krait or python, able to effectively multi role and combat against the big boys , to have all my hopes dashed by the announcement it will be a small ship .

Of course what we really need is locations that have only small landing pads. (I am assuming that there are no Ody small-pad-only settlements?)

As the elusive Cobra MkIV will no longer be arguably the most flexible small ship, I'd hope that Frontier take the opportunity to add a small pad only variant of outposts for colonising players to select from when deciding which stations to add to their newly colonised system.

There are, but TBF, you can just park your ship anywhere assuming you can find suitable terrain. Small ships are just more convenient - you never have to park at a distance and walk to the base and you never have to wait around for the only medium sized pad at an outpost either.

There are Odyssey small-pad-only settlements. I did not have to look very far out from Sol: there's one in Sol.

That doesn't work if you want to conduct trade, or pick up ship-based missions from those settlements.

Yes, unfortunately. Unifying the mission boards would alleviate that somewhat. Obviously it wouldn't help in the case of things like cargo missions where your ship needs to interface with the settlement, but it's not necessarily a bad thing that there is part of the game where small ships excel.

I stand corrected, thanks.

(You can tell I don't do much Ody stuff. ;) )

What we really need is gameplay for small ships. irl vehicles are designed for a spec. Fit x soldiers and land on a beach. Carry x people in comfort and at y speed. Carry double x in security, stuff comfort. etc. Variants occur as different companies try to fill those specs with different priorities and design goals.

That wouldn't really work for a game but we could say a ship is designed to do this bit of gameplay. And we shouldn't get new ships unless we had new gameplay. Of course, that would require someone deliver some new gameplay. 😛 Right now, there's a whole swathe of ships I can't see any reason for except cheaper or bigger. 🤷‍♂️

The other day I was running missions and happened to be in my phantom at the time, and I actually had to leave and come back with my viper because the terrain was just that bad.

I'm not kidding. There was literally nowhere on the tiny circle of land surrounding one of the settlements that I could fit the phantom into. Anywhere the terrain itself was flat enough, it had a rock in it.
