This seems like the perfect compromise to me. Some players have been asking for open only for ages. Others have been just as much against it.
So, compromise; why not make Stronghold Carriers only attackable in Open? This is no more effective, but gives these players the chance to actually fight back! Even better, defending players can respawn right there, and even have zero rebuys, so it's very open for first introductions. Meanwhile, attackers at least have a longer rebuy as they travel back, so you'll get something for fighting them off, even if you lose more than you win!
Basically, just nerf the merit rewards for attacking them in solo. Even a ~25% reduction would be more than enough to basically invalidate solo play, as the other side could attack YOUR carriers and be much more effective, doing it in open.
