Don't Panic: BGS guides and help

I completed several missions for two systems in 2 hours before the tick, and I earned dozens of millions - ZERO % changes for the faction. Any idea?

Numerous questions:
  • what state is the faction in?
  • what system?
  • what were the missions?
  • what was going on with other factions?
  • what was the influence effects of the missions? (credits rewarded has no effect)
  • was there any other traffic in the system?
  • how soon after the tick were you checking, noting that the tick can take a while
  • did any faction change at all? (i.e yours didn't change, but others did?)
  • what's the system population?

Who am I really helping in BGS?
Let me describe a situation. I support the MY faction in system 001, competing against the XXX faction. Doing missions for my faction, I was tasked with eliminating a few bad pirates in system 002 (controlled by the opposing XXX faction). When I returned after several missions, I found out that in addition to the reward from my faction, I also had a BOUNTY from the other one. When I sold it, it turned out I'm now their ally. When I sell a bounty, who really gains in influence? Is it the faction that assigned me the missions, or the other faction, which got rid of several pirates causing trouble in their different system?

Assuming you're meaning "Massacre X pirates of Y Faction"
  • Turning in the mission supports your faction in System 001, and hurts Y faction in System 002
  • Handing in the bounties if done normally, will help the faction who issued the bounty, in the system you claimed it in. If you hand it in at an IF, nobody gains influence.

To be a bit more detailed... let's say you've got the following setup:
  • System X, ruled by Faction A, and also contains Faction B
  • System Y, ruled by Faction B, and contains pirate Faction C.

In System X, you accept a mission to kill pirates belonging to Faction C in System Y, and you go do it.
  • Killing pirates in System Y will give you bounties issued by Faction B[1].
  • Completing the mission will cause Faction A in System X to gain influence, and Faction C in System Y to lose influence.
  • If you hand the bounties that Faction B issued somewhere in System X, Faction B gains influence in System X
  • If you hand the bounties that Faction B issued somewhere in System Y, Faction B gains influence in System Y

i.e it doesn't matter where you earned the bounties, just where you cash them in (and how)

[1] assuming no local jurisdiction applies where you do the mission.

If you hand the bounties that Faction B issued somewhere in System X, Faction B gains influence in System X

But what if I did a mission in System X, ruled by Faction A, and this mission took place in System Y? Should I cash in these bonds in System Y or in X? Because if I sold them in X, thinking that it would give influence to A, it actually seems that I gave an 18% boost to B :/

Doesn't matter.

Your only options are:
  • cash bounties in a system the faction exists, giving them a +influence; or
  • cash them at an IF, and give no influence

Influence always goes to the faction that issued the bounty, not the owner of the station/system... and faction of issue is whatever jurisdiction you were in at the time.

So if sell bounty in system X - Influence goes to faction B (as bounty issuer) in system X?
If I sell bounty in system Y, Influence goes to faction B in system Y?

^^^I played for nearly 7 hours on Saturday, completed about 18 missions (I chose big influence +++++ instead of money), and as bonus after those missions, I've made a substantial amount from bounties (for oposite faction)...
...and to my surprise this morning, instead of seeing a significant increase in influence of the faction I did all those missions, I noticed a massive drop, whereas my competitors (bounty issuers)saw the opposite...

Great thanks for explanation. It seems that instead of battling a mythical opponent in the system, I was fighting with myself yesterday...

FWIW, that's why I did the barrage of questions before :) There's a lot of things that might seem intuitive, but aren't, and can result in just uppercutting yourself with the BGS.

My own favourite is running about 20-odd missions, but running out of time, and accidentally leaving two or three to fail. Is enough to write off all that work if you're the leading faction.

You right...
I just found this guide now: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DpSekMUHO_2eci_8AnMz91ZPKuOnmhRM/view?pli=1
And it says:
As you can see during the last bounty hunting rotation we’ve gained vouchers for not
just our own faction but also various amounts for the other factions present.
Turning these in will also increase influence for those factions and thus undermine the
bounties we’re about to claim for our faction.

This can be avoided however; Hold on to their vouchers till they are in a favorable
state (Famine or Outbreak) where combat actions don’t affect their influence gain.
Alternatively you can hand them in at a base or star-port with an Interstellar Factor
present. Interstellar Factors have the ability to claim/pay all bounties, bonds and
fines galaxy wide at a cost of a 25% payout penalty and by extension a 25% decrease to
their influence gain.
Note: Currently the consensuses is that turning in vouchers in increments of 5.000.000 credits worth or
less are more favorable to influence gain then larger amounts of 10.000.000 credits worth or more.

If you have contemporary and tricky BGS questions, I really recommend that you join the EDBGS Discord Server. It is full of BGS practitioners offering practical advice.

Any link? I am new to discord, cannot find EDBGS Discord Server.

Maybe it's just for me and/or I am totally wrong, but it seems that all/most of the links in Jane Turner's original post(s) are dead...
I guess that's because the forum was moved but isn't a bit embarrasing to have her posts fixed on-top of the Background Simulation section and then you can't get anywhere?

Forgive me, if I got something wrong here, but if not, why not replace these links?

it's probably because the forum migrated to a different software some time ago. There is a way to access those linked posts, but it takes a bit of effort.

For example, take the very first link in the OP. It points to https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/221826-Dev-Update-(07-01-2016) . Now, replace the "showthread.php" bit with "threads", and remove everything after the thread number (221826 in this case). This should leave you with a link looking like this:

This is where you will find the thread that was linked originally. If the link goes to a post rather than a thread beginning, you can add the post number after the thread number like so:

becomes this (I don't know how to prevent the automatic link preview):

Basically you add the post number as "/post-<number>" to the end.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I have heard about that forum transfer, but having some AI (or sweatshop coder) correct all the wrong links, as there is as you show a clear (and easy) pattern of how to rename them, once you know it, seems kinda impossible somehow...;)

Is there an up to date list over mission effect on faction, or is this the only one to follow? https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/missions

Also, that link, for example, "Salvage: Ground" stating it increase Civil libery, is that ground mission or what? Cant seem to find what ground mission have in regards of effect on factions anywhere.
