DLC 19 Speculation

It is really ironic that a year ago, everyone was worried the support is done and now people are practically hoping for PZ1 to end just for a hypotetical sequel that is not even guaranteed to come and even if it is, it will probably be in 3-5 years or so.
Since we got an own IP game comming in 2026 I really don't think it will be 5 years. With the level of how PC2 was released, I happily wait 3 instead of 2 years, though.

I mainly want PZ1 to end, because the Devs are now operating with a 5 year old game with tons and tons of code that is hard to comb through, which means hard to patch bugs. I'm on the good side of the spectrum, only have a few (not working curbs and such). And I can't see them add major new features (flying) or improvements (climbing) to a 5 year old game. Besides the code that just does not seem like a financial wise decision. The game hopper audience has abondoned the game and for them to come back, they need a new fresh one to dig their teeth into. Us loyal players can't pay Frontier back on our own with such an investment of time and resources that is needed for huge features.

I see no logic reason on why there wouldn't be a PZ2. I mean, even now PZ has more players than the PC2 Frontier has high hopes for. (And if the release would have gone better, I'm sure the hopes would have actually been met)

I get your point with the advantages of a sequel, but I really, really doubt that the 2026 title is PZ2. Especially when we will still recieve content for the first game in 2025. The only games that Frontier released quite soon after first iteration were always the licensed ones where they were obligated to release them to certain date, eg. JWE because of the movies or F1 manager because of new season in the sport.

I was not here for long time and I don't think I want to check 90 pages to find an answer for my question,
But was there a discussion related to the announcement in the last Frontier Unlocked where they said that:

"We did have a lots of speculation about Planet Zoo PC, it was the Zookepers Pack, everyone thought it was the end. BUT our team is continuing to work very hard - we don't want to give too much away but - there might be an animal pack next year, potentially. Potentially we are going to share more information closer to the time but there's a lots coming. Lots coming."

??
I think that's an excellent news and wanted to share 🥹

Yeah we knew about that. What's interesting to me is how they remark the "there's a lot coming" by repeating it twice. I wonder what that really means.

Might be also just a nervous behavior of being it Live so she said a simple info that there is a lots coming and then she wanted to end the discussion somehow before the guy took over the next conversation so she just repeated the same sentence to fill in the gap? 🤷‍♂️

IIRC it said "own IP" though, not licenced IP. And to be fair, the only comparision between initial game and sequel we have is Planet Coaster 1 and 2. One is not a pattern.
I agree though, that getting new content in 2025 for PZ makes me question things, too. What I assume is, that there never was content planned for 2025. We probably get a DLC that was planned to release prior to the zoo keeper pack, but due to the lay offs, lack of staff and console ports, plans got chaotic. To me, the zookeeper pack including the career mode story basically screams last pack, still.

I've got the exact same thoughts. We should always keep in mind that basically the whole PZ team had to leave. I'm quite sure this changed some plans. I guess for 2024 there were probably also four DLCs planned. Maybe even the changed pattern of DLCs with 7 animals and some scenery instead of two scenery packs and two animal packs is also due to these reasons?

I don't want PZ1 to end yet...I think there are still lots of animals I'd get excited about adding to the game. Plus I've invested so much in it now (money, time and experience) and would like a bit longer for that to pay off.

I'd like 1 more full year of PZ 1 (4 DLCs plus some QoL updates). I think early 2027 would be good for PZ2 and for it to be more fully cooked than PC2 when it arrives.

Only community managers were made redundant - not anyone in technical roles, as far as I'm aware. That won't have had an impact on DLCs produced. Releasing console version + PZ2 are the most likely reasons for fewer DLCs this year. Also plans won't change that quickly...there will be a very long lead time between DLC production and sale. The next 1-2 DLCs are probably already pretty much finished and going through testing and tech checks.

We know of at least 1 developer effected by the lay offs. And I doubt they were the only one. Community managers were just more vocal, connected and known within the community. Developers are usually backstage, not on our radar.

there we definitely technical roles that got affected at least one was vocal about it. Plus there have been a few simple errors in this years animals at least according to remaster modders that I cannot see a full team of seasoned developers making. I agree that the layoffs likely didnt have an affect on the number of dlc but very likely had an impact on the quality and potentially the structure.

As others pointed out, we know of at least one member who primarily worked on the bats who got made redundant. Regardless of that, the company went through mass layoffs, of course technical roles were also made redundant. There were talks of over 900 people being made redundant, there's no way that's only non technical roles.

As much as it is true that the DLCs are planned and made in a longer period than the three-four months between DLCs, I think you vastly over-estimate how far ahead things are finished 😅 I'm extremely confident in saying that I'd put money on the fact that the next DLC isn't pretty much finished yet, especially as the most likely release date is in April.

Not gonna lie, I’m kind of ready for the end. While I would be happy to get more content, I know it won’t go my way. So I really don’t care too much what we get and how we get it at this point. Sure, could Frontier finally make a South America pack with new world monkeys, birds, rodents, and reptiles? Could we get a Coastal pack with pinnipeds, sea otters, and birds? Could we get an awesome Arboreal pack with a tree kangaroo, monkeys, coati, and maybe some enrichment items and birds? The answer to all of that, is I really doubt it at this point.

I’m happy for everyone who gets what they want, but at this point I really don’t think Frontier is gonna deviate from what they do. 6/7 pack of mammals, maybe one not mammal. Even asking for a Caribbean Flamingo and Greater Rhea feels like some Herculean task. So I really don’t think I’ll ever see a duck outside of mods 🥺
What modders have done has made me more excited to play PZ than ZooKeeper pack. Even with the spurred tortoise and baboon which I wanted. While I haven’t had a chance to use it, GreatCakes bird mods look amazing.

I still want as much official animals and campaigns as possible since I play mostly one the console these days and the mods are not available for console unfortunately.
I play on console because the graphics are better and the game seems to work smoother.

I would be happy with almost every new species as long as they are not domestics.

My biggest wishes are rare and endangered species of any kind with Père David’s deer and Snub nosed monkey being at the top of my lists.

And since snub nosed monkeys would come to Europe next year it would be a good occasion to focus finally on Asia/China and also the rare species.

Snub nosed monkey could be a good choice to showcase the new pack since they are different, cute and so interesting.

I think a Chinese themed DLC would be pretty cool, while I prefer the idea of a South America pack I won’t lie. If done right I think it could be very cool.
  1. Golden snub nosed monkey
  2. Peere David’s deer
  3. Chinese alligator
  4. Golden pheasant
  5. Mandarin Duck
I mean with just these five animals I would be pretty darn happy.
