Ships Mk 5 Confusion

I'm old, mind rusty and easily confused. When can I buy the Mk 5? It's the tenth of December. Do I have to wait until the Thursday update?

My first impression is the Cobra mk5 is a re-release of the mk4 with some minor changes. Repurposing old content.

It's at least 170m/s faster than the Mk IV with concomitantly higher rotation speeds. It has a class 5 slot for a bigger shield or more cargo, and two extra utility slots for more shield boosters. It jumps further and handles much better in SCO.

Even if you opt for the class 5 shield, the Mk. V still hauls more than the Mk. IV.

The boost on the Mk. V is wild - you can be going backwards at max speed in FA-off, boost, and be going forwards at max speed.

In short, the Mk. V is a completely different and obviously far superior ship in almost every respect.

The Cobra V can boogie and jump.

Not finished engineering it and I’m around 650 boost and 40LY jump range with full weapons, utilities, shields, etc.

I’m sure the assorted grease monkeys out there can squeeze more out of this ship.

I am just saying it's a repurposed version of the mk4. I did not say it would be a bad ship just it's an old design with new stats. Maybe they can go through and update some of the other ships since this is the case.

That's a... different take...

It has an entirely new ship model and entirely new cockpit. The only thing it shares with the Mk. IV is the five hardpoints, and even those are in different places, IIRC (it's been years since I flew the Mk. IV.)

Mind linking your build, out of curiosity? Thanks

How did you get that impression? The Mk 5 is nothing like the Mk 4 at all. Like @the100thmonkey said: It looks differently, it flies totally differently, the cockpit is all new, the internals are different. That's a ship designed from scratch. Really no aspect of the Mk 5 feels like a copy, except the name and the general Cobra-ness of the hull.

I viewed the new Cobra mk5 from an object-oriented perspective with an updated modeling and attributes from that abstract mk4 that seemed similar. As a new release, the base attributes of the ship stayed in theme to the other ships previously released this year.

The Cobra mk5 is an upgrade from its predecessors including the mk4 limited release, and the updated version is a very good ship. Could have kept the extra size 1 optional but otherwise, it has enough internal options to personalize the multi-role design of the ship. I could easily foresee the Cobra mk5 being the #1 small ship for starting players once it's released for credit purposes.

I've had a carrier for a while, I have all the end-game ships, and I gave up on all the S-size ships long ago, I never even took interest in any of them. The Cobra Mk V is not only the only small ship I would even consider flying, it's also fun and its looks and stats are so good that I'm happily using it for things I used to use my Phantom for, and it genuinely beats M-size ships in many regards. It has enough range not to suck as a bubble bus when you're used to a 60+ ly ship with a Class 5 FSD, and in addition to that it's far faster than any M ship I own, even the Mamba (which has such short range that I would never use it just go get around). It's got its own niche even if you're already an "end game" player.
