FDEV give us the full VR on foot gaming please...

I don't get it. After all those update FDEV never fix the (on foot gaming) request from the VR gamer community. Is It that much of a big deal ?
1- link the on foot tracking to the headset
2- Add an option to leave or remove the square frame
Am I asking too much or it is an impossible task to do from the Dev ?

This has been a real head-scratcher since Odyssey was released. If you use the camera suite whilst disembarked, you can get the game to display in full 3D VR whilst on foot, albeit in third-person, and there was even a glitch (which I haven't checked if it still works) that could make that first-person on-foot VR. However, for some reason, FDev have simply failed to do the work to finish that off and make it work properly as an actual full VR mode. Instead, they seem to be completely backing away from any further VR development at all, to the extent that VR players are lucky if they get bugfixes, never mind anything else.

Man, I really wish that FDEV will give VR a bit more love in the next months. The VR Odyssey experience is still lacking a lot of fine tuning. The shadows really annoy me, the On Foot VR is the cheapest ever (I mean, at least let us choose a nicer Background than this grey wall) and the bug reports for VR gather dust without anything being done about them.

VR Elite is the reason I switched to PC. It's the reason I got a Quest and a HOTAS. The experience is awesome. I really hope FDEV is not going to dump it like they did with the consoles.

I've been LOVING VR Elite after returning after years of waiting for my PC to be upgrade for VR :D

Sadly I keep getting missions that require on foot sections and make the on foot ruin my experience. A real dampener.

Is there a way to get the graphics in the Imax 2D Screen readable?
It looks like some awful 480p display

What settings can I do, because if I can at least use it I'd be okay as a stop gap.

What headset are you using?

I’m not having any issues with the on foot Odyssey stuff and any resolution changes in ED’s settings only alter the mirror display. The only thing I can do to crappify the virtual flatscreen is use AMD FSR 1.0 on its performance setting (I use CAS with the slider at about 60% and that looks fine in my Quest 3).

Cheers for interest.

I'm using a Quest 3, over VD, using VDVR+OC dll from opencompsite.
Running on:
AMD RX 7900 XTX
13th i5-13600k
32G

Im running it at 125% scale, SMAA, 90FPS

Does the flat screen pull from what you have mirrored on your monitor? ... which for me is super small and scaled down to give me better performance.

I will add btw, the desk portal feature on Virtual Desktop has made me able to play this game in VR with my keyboard.
Love it.

I checked that before posting in case there was a new bug, but it didn’t change anything in my HMD view.

I’m using AirLink & stand-alone launcher. Quest 3, i7 11700, RTX 4070ti. Game virtual flatscreen is fine to my eyes, similar to 1080p flatscreen quality.

Poor man's on-foot VR to show how close FDev came with this feature:

1. Disembark your ship/SRV
2. Press F11 to launch the external camera suite
3. Press the number buttons to change the Point-of-View to your avatar's shoulder.

Congrats you're in VR mode while on-foot.... almost. You can walk, run, jump, crouch, and emote. Menus, doors, wheel don't work. For that, you have to exit the camera, go to flat mode, interact, and then return to VR. This means most VR gameplay while on-foot is not really feasible.

It can't be that hard to give us at least some resemblance of on-foot gameplay in VR. 2025 is coming, here's hoping.

Unfortunately, this has been the case since the beginning of Odyssey, but it would be very nice if real VR on Foot also became a small side goal in 2025.

I made a suggestion last month regarding virtual flatscreen changes - playing with Virtual Desktop, I had a curved screen closer to my eyes with a black surrounding void. It was a big improvement on what we have now.

(As a bonus, I’d like it for the FSS as well - which is a 2D virtual flatscreen after the first zoom level anyway, but without any of the orbit lines or cool zoom transitions)

Such a shame!

Cheers Arioch!

I went and posted my support and concerns.

I dont do planetside stuff, I dont do exobiology and I guess I wont be doing the coming colonisation at this point as I run my 2D flatscreen on my monitor (mirroring) at 720p.

I guess I need to up that up high, and hope my VR doesnt tank :(

So Arioch, when playing, you coming in to land and how do you switch easily over the VR Desktop setup?

Short answer: I don’t 😅

I stick with the grey periscope view because to get the curved screen in my demo video I had to switch the game to flatscreen in Options, disconnect my Quest 3 which was using AirLink, reconnect with Virtual Desktop and change the VR runtime so it would work, then go back into the game before messing with the VD options. You could also go further and use side-by-side 3D to get some depth perception but I couldn’t really demonstrate that in the video (and the resolution in-game isn’t fantastic either).

Ack, such a shame because ED looks amazinnnnng in VR (minus a bit of shimmering jaggies)

So, would you say my fix for my experience of a 720p flatscreen in vr, is to up my Resolution on my monitor?

Assuming yes, Ill try it later this weekend coming and see if upping it to 2k/4k drops my performance in VR (which I assume will!) but allows me to floating monitor flatscreen fps.

TBH, if it works and I can see then ill be ok for now :/
It feels so sad.

I’ve not seen any difference to the virtual flatscreen by altering the monitor resolution setting in-game - I’m not sure why you’re getting such a low quality image with the settings you’ve mentioned previously. On foot locations can be a performance hog, so does Virtual Desktop do any downscaling to keep the fps up? I know AirLink can give a rubbish image if variable bitrate is enabled and the game decides to throw a wobbly.

If you want to really have a “why don’t they…” moment, try using the camera suite next time you’re on foot as per JR250’s post above (though I go the extra step of repositioning the camera to just in front of the avatar’s head). 😁

That work if you plane to stay longer on the surface. But in Exobio... you just pop out get your scanner and scan and go back again in to get to your next scan.
The fact is that we (VR Gamers) are a minority. They want to create a game immersive so VR is the way but money is taking here... too bad. This is the best space simulation game we have in VR now. But to keep positive, we got 4 new ships :)
