Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I am often puzzled when I see calls for common ground in the case of SC discussions, as if there was a place where SC and CIG practices in particular could be acceptable at some level.

It is as if some kind of misguided equanimity called for common ground to find acceptance when discussing cases such as the Fyre festival or Theranos.

As for the “having fun” argument, I don’t think many in the thread have an issue with it. If that is what is meant by common ground then by all means be my guest. People can have fun with tons of stuff, even the crappiest of games have their audience 🤷‍♂️

I guess I’m a little vino’d but the common ground is that there’s pretty graphics I guess? Lol, yeah, maybe I’ve dug a hole

but not everything is broken...I mean, even I have a grudging respect for what's been achieved on the meshing thing overall...even if it is still busted beyond playable due to the rest of the spaghetti code mess collapsing around it.

Yeah I guess my point is that many of the things that are broken are significant and/or related to the networking changes.

I just find it odd to see stability as round the corner or to laud the changes at this point.

(There's a basic baseline of 'networking is hard', which you can nod to in any online game, including here. But CIG have fumbled this process so badly, and accrued such an obvious tech debt legacy along the way, and fallen so far short of release norms to date, that they're clearly a long way from being out of the woods. Acts like doubling their server costs [to achieve performance], culling previous claimed features [persistence], and ignoring their own roadmap on preventing killer outliers [IE not gating X players from overloading server Y] show how 'fake it to maybe make it' is still key to the process here. Many aspects of this patch are 'for show'...)

But yeah as always, anyone who enjoys it should enjoy it :)

But if they see a bright future in those server flames I still claim the right to giggle ;)

As for Ci~G's business practises, Amen to that as well :D

It's not a calling for a baseless and biased common ground...that would make this a sub-reddit. What's more 'wished for', certainly for my part, is a sense of tolerance...or even insincere encouragement... where every vaguely positive post concerning star citizen isn't automatically and instantaneously decried as heresy. Seriously, it's like someone presses the 'release the hounds' (or release the Twitch blooper reels) button every time there's a pleasant enough screenshot not showing any one of star citizens 40,000 bugs in it.

There's nothing more depressing than seeing every... and increasingly rare... alternative poster expressing a positive opinion on the game decried as a charlatan, Chris Roberts acolyte or village idiot...it's certainly not the reason I started posting in this thread... as much as it now seems to be increasingly accepted as the norm rather than the exception.

I get the whole intolerance with regard to the idiot Roberts, Ci~G as a company, even the dumpster fire development of star citizen or the magnum opus, there's certainly no argument from me on that score but if this thread insists on driving away anyone posting anything about star citizen not contained in a Twitch blooper reel from yet more f***ing streamers instead of from people who actually play the game but don't require your subscription or clicks to make a living out of it, it turns this into a real echo chamber where we can all continue to pat ourselves on the back at being the only ones who are right all of the time. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know about tribalism... If we have all bought the same game, and have had wildly differing experiences with it, is that tribal?
I managed to fly my ship twice over the years, the rest of my attempts to play were spent dying doing dangerous stuff like getting out of bed, going down stairs or trying to get to my ship...
Granted, with how 'uninviting' my personal experience has been, I have not been inclined to attempt to waste even more time trying to make things work as they might. But, undeterred, I'm spending hours downloading 4.0 (80Mb fibre here, so nothing happens in a hurry!) and going to give it yet another go.

Why am I not feeling particularly optimistic?

Yes, it has pretty graphics, will probably still run around 60 FPS on my humble PC (which has all NVMe drives...) and, who knows, I may even get my ship into space once more!

Was this in relation to Intrepid? I don't think anyone was calling him a charlatan, not even implying it. His credentials here are solid.

However, after 10 years and the many years of this thread in its incarnations, as well as on reddit and other forums, its clear there are many that are either bots, shills, or people so far down the rabbit hole, it makes no difference, they might as well be paid shills. To those of us who have experienced these posters, time and again, its all too easy to spot the signs of someone who is trying to promote the game as something more than it is or living in la-la land.

Was I not there to read all those posts or something? I've been here for 8 years watching the occasional posts from almost all of the genuine star citizen backers (good or bad) dwindle away to practically zero...and hell, I really miss the comedy option of an alternative post every now and then.

...and no, it's not in direct relation to Humbug or his posts...he's a big boy and tends to shrug off any sense of negativity the same as I do, we've both endured the required shame of being star citizen backers for a long time :D

Thanks for being more articulate than my somewhat vino’d self!
I don’t think anyone is being particularly harsh beyond pointing out that the game is a broken mess, but it would be great if we could have more sc fans sharing their experience and thoughts, if only to make this thread more humorous ;-)
I think we already know just how badly cig is run, and how scammy its bizniz model is, and although I enjoy sniggering at its hilarious bugs (and personally believe there’s a game in those bugs somewhere) it would be good to have a foil to fence against

This thread has always served one clear purpose in the years I've been in it. It allows criticism of CIG & SC without everything devolving into a personal, defensive spat. (IE where regular SC players feel an 'attack' on SC is an attack on them, and respond in kind.)

It may tilt too far the other way at points ('anyone who plays SC is an idiot' style etc), but it can be dragged back from that, and it still serves that same long-running purpose. As tame as the main sub is these days, you still can't even mention simple facts (say the departure of 3 execs recently, in line with the Insider piece) without a deluge of downvotes, froth or ire.

So why not hash it all out here, where it raises few hackles and actually gets a debate? Where people are genuinely interested in the hows and the whys of SC's technical t-poses and industry infamy etc.

In that sense it's never gonna be the best place to share a 'I had a wonderful time' trip report. (Let alone a 'tech is coalescing' post ;)). It never has been. There's always gonna be some context mobbing.

But there are still a ton of other places where those stories can be shared. (And this place will still chew over the good and the potential, time to time, space-head style).

There are also just enough sporadic players here to keep us honest. They're just mainly of the 'fascinated how it broke this time' persuasion too ;)

(Throw in the tendency here to scrap over the littlest lazy generalism at the drop of the hat, and full blown echo chambering is just about kept at bay ;))

I just think it is what it is. A place where reading the CIG entrails and watching the tech go boom are the primary fascinations ¯\(ツ)/¯

If you manage to get in and fly, post up on your experiences...I downloaded 4.0 a while back but still haven't felt much like dropping in to play (still too engrossed in the new Indy game or Stalker 2). I still haven't redone my hotas bindings yet either so I haven't flown any of my ships since early 3.18...I've only dropped in to play star citizen as a passenger or turret gunner for mates every now and then. :)

That's fine for all you redditors...I prefer my reading content with a bit less frothing at the mouth and why I stick almost exclusively to here ;)

Do you know when’s the next free fly event is? I’m feeling tempted to do another episode of “A Skeptic Play’s Star Citizen.” I’m kind of curious to known if they’ve solved the “Trapped inside a M. Night Shamilon (sp?) Movie” NPC vibe that happened the last time I tried the free fly.”

I don't have any idea except it'll be guaranteed during the next ship sale of course. To be fair, I should get in there and play a bit of SC myself instead of just bleating about it...I'm just too lazy or distracted by other properly working games to spend the 15 hours setting up my hotas bindings :D
