Newcomer / Intro Griefers/gankers are def. ruining the fun for me

I really really want to play in the Open. The suspense and meeting other fellow CMDRs is welcoming for me.

I totally understand the piracy, assassins, role playing - all is understood. I played EVE for a brief time, so I also understand that logic.

But griefing is just no fun. It's like getting a financial and mission setback for no reason. Someone destroyed my exploration Asp Explorer with no weapons - congrats, what a skill. 🙄

In the past I encountered them every now and then, but nowadays, every single day for multiple times around the Bubble. It just sucks.

I know skills to evade the attack - in theory, but in practice I usually get my FSD turned off by Grom's rocket or just destroyed entirely in 3sec.

I tried setting that last-system button, but for some reason it doesn't work for me. If anyone knows better/good tactics to evade them please share.
Don't git gud, git revenge instead. Build yourself a nice fast Sidewinder with the performance enhanced thrusters, heatsinks to stay cool and a 2A FSD Interdictor. You could fit double chaff in case they have the concorde cannons, not that they'll be able to see you to shoot, anyway. If you ever get blown up by a griefer, transfer said Sidewinder and go get them. Go into supercruise and hunt them down. Keep interdicting them, then hit silent running and boost away back into supercruise. repeat until they cry or block you.

With your Asp, fit point defence to stop the missiles, and heatsinks. If they interdict you, immediately boost and hit silent running, then use the heatsinks to stay cold so that they can't see you.

Why waste your time? Either block them or fly in Solo or PG, not an issue really.

I don't understand why fdev doesn't make a mode where anyone can join (like open), but pvp is technically impossible. I'm sure that will attract some players that are now repelled from the game.

Some of the people who think that open is the only real way to play the game ("It's called Elite Dangerous") seem to think that if others would be forced to play in open only, there would be more targets to shoot at. Instead, it would only encourage those others not interested in pvp to leave Elite and go play other games instead.
If you are in open, it is correct you're an eligible target (for what reason should it be different?).

I will admit to skimming through your thread, but here's my advice. Set your throttle to 3/4.when you get intradicted. This will make you much more maneuverable, and much more likely to not be successfully interdicted.

What about SCO FSDs? Haven't they messed up interdictions?

The myths that 3/4 throttle, 1/4 throttle, 1/3 throttle, full throttle and help from lateral thrusters were busted by FD in a livestream, where they said throttle has no affect on the outcome. Once the interdiction tether has been established, the mini-game pulls you out of the normal supercruise modelling into a situation where only pitch, roll and yaw control the ship and the response is affected by certain unspecified ship characteristics.

I did my best to test this. I couldn't see any difference in the results with the throttle in different positions; however, there is so much randomness in the process that it's not possible to be conclusive.

Probably true, but I met them in Bernard's star, Alpha Centauri, not to mention Sol
That's the problem right there. Check the powerplay map and Inara. That whole area is a giant Powerplay warzone. I know it's not your fault for not knowing that but I expect especially for Alpha Centauri last week it wasn't gankers so much as powerplay players working their turf wars and you got caught up in it. Yes ganking is annoying but there is ganking and there is pvp wars.

Greetings, CMDRs!
Long time player, short time forum poster here.

Having a PvP consent toggle would be appreciated, but until that time, I just play in Group mode where I invite my friends and family who pick up the game to have a quiet, low key approach to the game until they are ready to either move on to open or join a more player driver Group. This game already has a steep learning curve where mistakes will cost you credits and materials spent on Engineers, I don't need other players telling me to 'git gud'.

However, I am intrigued by this 'blocking' method. Where can I learn more about this as I wouldn't mind joining Open play in my lower cost-maxxed out SideWinders and Cobra Mk3's, which each only has a 1 or 2 million rebuy, tops.

Congratulations on finding a home, Maboleth!

try to emergency drop, it doesnt leave a "low wake"

another one is to keep an eye on the minimap for any black boxes in the system or your contacts list, if they fly the usual bog standard ganker ship, keep a close eye on em and try to not give out your backside at all

use the SCO module too, you can avoid PvP by using it to not only head to destinations faster but also to run away from any danger

anyways, as someone who does enjoy ganking and PvP, you can usually get away from most people with practice however there really are times where you can't win and its completely fine to hide away in Solo for doing your daily grinds, I wouldn't really blame you if you do

stay out of popular open systems (or open in general) until you know how to fly your ship and can equip it so it's not defenseless if you're going to be flying in populated areas.

I'm not sure why newbies complain about the most risky way to play the game - with the complete wrong equipment to do so, and then wonder why they aren't having fun. Play to your strengths and you'll have fun. Open in popular systems in some unarmed paper skinned beginner ship is something you should do when dying isn't going to bother you.

So don't play til you are good enough ?
Or don't play in the areas where the money is ?
Get guid ?
Admittedly not all interactions are bad but those who continually pick on the "easy targets" do so with immunity.
Play in the mode you want to and enjoy the game .

playing can occur in areas and modes that align with your skill and ability and the kind of playing you want to do. you can play anywhere but not every place and every mode and type of playing is the same risk.

money has nothing to do with modes.

if you want to play as a defenceless mouse in an environment of cats, snakes and birds... expect to be eaten. this isn't "elite: safe good citizen gets rewarded". a smarter move would be to do peaceful unarmed stuff elsewhere, or exclude the dangerous component here (since it's certainly not the npcs). both of which are your choice as a player.

being picked on in this game while you are riding a tin coffin is entirely your decision. I've got no problem with people just killing such players out of a whim. same sympathy as people driving onto train tracks while a cross sign is telling you not to and they get hit.

trying to portray such behaviour as bad is really where these threads go wrong. it's a kill or be killed galaxy that fdev created (especially between players ). and there is nothing wrong with killing player ships not where they ought to be. if that's not fun for you, you have plenty of options in game. but also, other games that emphasise a more cooperative multiplayer experience.

Yeah... 'educational'.
I actually tried to learn those escaping manouvers, but they are far more skilled than me because it's their playstyle. I totally play something else, hence no weapons.

I would prefer to remain in the Open, for the reasons I said above. But if these setbacks continue this frequently... maybe I will join some private session group or something. Don't know what else to do.
Mobius PVE, you still meet people there. Need to ask them on their web--site.
Also blocking them works good, you will never meet this person again. Also you will shield everybody who gets with you in the same instance. So gankers will be disappointed in the empty space eventually :D.

Well... did you notice lions lay down / sleep like 15-18 hrs out of 24 ? Guess why ? Because it is super expensive (energy) to hunt.
But for gankers it is super cheap (zero cost to be exact). So your reasoning do not work.

pretty sure your analogy still works. instancing is sleeping threats. the vast majority of players in open aren't killed for fun whenever they're in it. even popular systems. it's only a small subset that are.

so... still works.
