Sidewinders: Does anyone fly these by choice?

With a flight training manual and a thermos... what's not to like?

I do carrier exploration with mine. 30Ly range.
Such a joy to fly and land. I am seldom more than 5 jumps away from my FC in it.

I use mine for the mountainous salad bashing, there is nothing with a smaller footprint, on more than one occasion I have landed in such a tight area that it was not possible to get the SRV out:)

Bio Siddy
I bought a new Diamond Back Explorer for the same purpose!
Engineered for max jumprange, then after using it for a couple of sessions (Exo), decided to make it aa bit more practical and fitted shields, a bigger powerplant and power distributor, a cargo rack with 10T of limpits and a Wake scanner....all up I think I only lost about 5LY max jump range.
I suspect even the Sidewinder can land in places the DBX cannot.

Cheers

Who remembers the Quince missions for scanning bases? The Sidewinder was the tool of choice because of its cheap rebuy. Players figured out that you could make twice as much money if you only did the journey one way, so they needed to suicide after the scans were complete. It was a lot of fun to do it in open. There were Sidewinders bouncing on the ground everywhere and players begging each other to kill them.

There were also other missions where you could make money quicker by suiciding, like the kill skimmer missions, for which the Sidewinder was the perfect tool for the job.

And I was trying to remember the place responsible for my excessive number of rebuys. :D thanks, cmdr.

I remember the forum outrage when it was fixed as a bug/exploit (the skimmer one, proximity completion of mission then suicide into surface). Lots of people were very vocal about losing the quality gameplay of repeatedly flying a ship into the ground hard enough to make it explode. A fine study on how rewards influence enjoyment, as I don’t recall any other time people found the farming of deliberate ship destruction to be an enjoyable game loop.

ROFL! I'm almost sorry I missed this insanity.

I still have my sidey
Been tweaked a bit.... enhaced drives etc etc etc
Mostly its used a taxi to get from job to job, but mostly I take into Shin Dez , fly to the station, and say to the naughty peeps "Come on out and fight me if you think you're hard enough"

Then ones that accept usually die *

* from laughing too much 😜

I used it for reputation missions as a delivery boy ship. IMO the Sidewinder is the pinnacle of engineering in ED. Because it's the only ship I've seen which uses ducktape. That and WD40 are the main engineering tools. If it doesn't move and it should? WD40. It it moves and it shouldn't? Ducktape!

It does have another use: the cheapest way to travel between any point in the galaxy and your original account starting point. Just blow yourself up and choose the right spawn location. Many a trip to Colonia has ended this way, on the express journey back to the bubble.

With the arrival of the Arx bought ships I am not sure it is the cheapest way of doing this anymore.

that would be pretty cool.... however lore wise am not sure that is a reason because at some point the entire jump drive technology was replaced between Elite 1st encounters and Dangerous....

(hence why space dredgers showed up after being in hyperspace for many many years despite only dropping out a small number of jumps away). in Frontier and 1st encounters hyperspace travel took months.

FD should really give the Sidey the ability to use the wormhole opened by a larger ship (as in lore).

Big three ships should have ability to carry piggybacked / bay launched Sidewinder and if you look compare Sidey and Taipan they are almost the same whet it comes to dimenstions, that would be really useful feature like allowing cmdr to visit and conduct business on outposts or delivering valuable mission related cargo to those stations, also in case of main ship destruction a Sidey could serve as an evac craft too.

iirc (but do not hold me to it) the plan was to allow exactly that however at the last min for what ever reason they had to drip it - presumably the sidey did not quite fit in the bay and bear in mind back in the day these ships were built with an assumption of interiors and being able to wander round in them so FD would not have been able to risk fudging it as we do not fly in a TARDIS
