On-foot missions, any reasons to do them?

Hi Commanders,

I love flying my ships, which I do for many reasons.
I also quite like to drive the SRV, but when I do it's for a specific reason, such as collecting Guardian materials, scanning comms at Jameson's crash site, etc...in the end that sole purpose is to get what I need for my ships.
I get it that some like stretching their space legs and wandering around, but are there any reasons to do on-foot missions to get something I need for my ships?
I have been looking, but other than making a few extra credits and reputation, I do not see how these are currently tied to any of the current in-space gameplay.

Thoughts?
Am I missing something?

That's the problem. On foot missions are barely tied to spaceship gameplay. All of it seems to revolve around gathering Odyssey materials that you use to modify your suits and weapons. It's a vicious circle - if you don't do the on-foot stuff, you don't need to modify them, but main reason to do them is to modify your gear. Most likely design idea was that you will upgrade your gear to use in on-foot conflict zones in Open, against other Commanders, running around in arena-like shooting game.
Recently Powerplay 2.0 introduced few activities in planet bases that can earn you merits, but other than that On-Foot stuff is separate, parallel gameplay loop.

Fun. New challenges. You do not have to do stuff solely for material collection.

IMO the hardest ground activity is sneaking into a settlement and stealing/downloading data/uploading contaminents.
100% agree with this; I do the ground missions for fun, but the payout is peanuts given the time and effort required compared to anything I like to do in ship.

Xenobiology is good for money and powerplay merits, but it's hardly on-foot, since you're really exploring in your ship and/or SRV and just stepping out to scan.

Doing on-foot missions is essential for gathering on-foot engineering mats to make on-foot missions bearable after you've logged hundreds of brutal hours on-foot without engineering, and then once fully engineered, there is no point at all, no.

The most satisfaction I've gotten from running around on-foot has been playing the Pioneer Supplies slot machine (finding stores no one has hit since the last server tick looking for pre-upgraded suits and weapons to add to my generally unused collection of on-foot gear). And if you buy ship kits and paint jobs, getting out and running around your ship is the only way to see them while playing without mastering 3rd person camera flight since they don't show up on your cockpit display or in your ship menu.

Occasionally on-foot CZs have in the past counted disproportionately toward Community Goal rewards and were well worth it.

In the end, it is much more engaging and satisfying to dock your ship and switch to Cyberpunk 2077 or Red Dead Redemption when you want to run around for a while. Or Starfield. Or pretty much any on-foot, open-world game. It has been a collective gripe about Odyssey from the beginning that it plays as if it were a separate game (and as such has to compete with much better standalone games).

Doesn’t really help as such but there are some fun ship / odyssey interactions.

Mats gathering with flechettes and limpets is nifty. The same flechette technique is extremely effective against ground troops. You can also use dumbfire missiles from your ship to carry out supposedly “on foot” combat missions.

Several horizons and odyssey mission types that are intended for on foot and in-srv can be done using a ship instead. Planetary scan and shutdown are good examples.

Landing at a settlement, jumping onto your ship and admiring it from various angles is fun. You can also use your ship shield to help with incoming small arms fire if you jump on top and stand inside the shield, which is kind of fun.

It’s pretty fun landing near a settlement, dropping the srv, then driving it to the settlement, using your ship as a kind of base of operations.

Ground combat missions can greatly accelerate combat rank progression. I think it’s specifically scavenger kills that do this, but they count pretty heavily toward your rank.

All in all, the two things don’t really fully connect, but they’re both fun and you can mix the two in some fun ways.

every body shouted for space legs now youre asking any point in them.its there for those that wanted why buy odyyssee if you dont want them, daft i say

Ermmm ... no, not everybody. I for one play Elite for space-ship flying and the FPS stuff is just ultra-boring for me. The other on-foot stuff is stupid really - scanning bios is ridiculous - you can only scan one type at a time? - daft - walking around settlements to steal stuff - why? (don't want to do FPS remember). A rifle for example costs more than a space-ship - tell me that isn't daft.

Sorry, but I am sure I am not alone in saying no I never shouted for space legs.

You are not alone... But there was much shouting.

Still there is much shouting. Atmo landings. Ship interiors and Gas giants.

Oh my, oh how much I did love Cyberpunk!
And I played/finished RDR2 not long ago...
As for Starfield...well, let's not talk about anything unrelated to ED on this forum ;-)

it's completely separate game loop from in space gameplay. So if you only care about flying your ships and doing ships related content then don't bother.
However, I like the missions, they are fun and there is a nice variety to choose from.

It almost feels like two separate games inside the same universe , but they do converge sometimes , like for example, if you enjoy exo biology gameplay, you do fly with your ships to distant planets, looking for new life forms, land on those planets, exit your ship and scan them. I don't know if there are on foot missions for exo biology but most ppl do them for 1. the money and 2. the first foot hold tag.

The only codified reason to do Odyssey stuff, is to get Odyssey engineering. That's about it.

It creates an interesting paradox in that, in order to get better equipment to do the things, you need to do the things, which lets you get better equipment to do the things.

Exactly and the worst (the VERY WORST) thing about it is that I fly around in space and see ships flying in "teams" - geez, how difficult would it have been to leave ships in space as "wings" and leave the team label for those FPS guys. Does anyone actually multi-play / team-up on foot? I know they wing-up (sorry, team-up  ) for space battles - most noticeably for AX combat but do people actually team-up on foot (aside from ground CZs where it isn't actually teaming-up you just join a side - I think)?

Yes - seeing ships in a "team" makes me want to throw things at my monitor.

Funny. I don't remember anybody asking for a mediocre FPS. Most of the people were asking for walking around ships, stations and planets.

Exobiology is fairly interesting and pays out well. You need Odyssey for that, but you don't need to do any on-foot missions.

Also, you can get out and kick the tires on your SRV when it gets stuck.
