Any date on when thr Mandalay goes on sale for in game credits?

Zero rebuy for certain ship/module combinations. This is a permanent advantage you have by just paying for it in the store, and you can't get it in the game. Yes, there are hulls that have zero rebuy from past events, but nothing similar to the pre-builds or stellar-packages of the new ships. Another permanent advantage of paying for something from the store is immediate transfer by means of selling it and deploying it again for zero costs. Is it a practical or huge advantage? No, it is not, but it confers a permanent advantage nonetheless.
i think you'd have to establish you can "win" in this game, or that an advantage of the type you posit, is actually an "advantage"

Nah, it's OK. Robert Maynard already confirmed that it is one, and thus on the spectrum of P2W. Since he was the one my statement was addressing, that argument of "whatever have I won" is just too boring to be discussed over and over again. If by now the opinions did not meet, they won't do it on the next 100 pages.

Just rest assured that there is no shame in playing (and loving) a game that has P2W elements. If you are buying some advantage in the game, you are not a bad person, so you don't have to justify it for yourself that it is not that ugly word everybody else is using in the industry. I will certainly not blame you for buying in, but instead applause you. Embrace the fact that FDEV found a way to finance ongoing development of the game in a minimal invasive way, and enjoy the new toys to play with.

How are the Inara statistics calculated please? Do they reflect a contemporary position or is there a strong historical element?

It sums up all the ships listed on player accounts. There is a historical element to that of course, but you can still very well compare how the new ships are doing, by looking at how fast they rise. P2 and T8 did reasonably well, leaving Cobra IV and Asp Scout behind, the Mandalay got quite a bit higher quickly, but has now leveled out, and Cobra V keeps sitting rock bottom.

I think that's because the P2, T-8 & the Mandalay nicely fill role niches. The Cobra Mk5 not so much, being a small ship limits how far it can go to fill a role.

Not just that, I suspect I'm not alone in thinking P2W is only meaningful if it's winning against other players who are losing as a consequence. I don't think many people care whether a single-player campaign-story game has P2W, because it simply doesn't matter what someone else does in their single-player game. In that context (singleplayer) it's almost like a book; they can read the first chapter of a book, then pay to skip to directly the last chapter, it's their loss not mine. They can buy the expansion companion book and get more to read, or the fan-art 'shipping characters. What happens in the privacy of their home doesn't affect me from enjoying the book the way I want to.

In multiplayer Elite, I don't feel that anything currently for sale gives a rich gamer an edge over me. Whether I'm into combat or powerplay or exploration or trading or mining, there is nothing in the store that could threaten my game or my achievements in it, no-matter how much money someone dumps into it. Squadron or powerplay leaderboards can become competitive at the highest levels, but nothing in the store is going to give anyone an advantage over me if I'm playing at that level. Probably the opposite; a one-size-fits-all approach is at a disadvantage next to expert tailoring and meta, and no-one at that level is low on credits to buy gear. The current exploration Community Goal; if someone buys an exploration ship so they can more easily join in, all it does is contribute (insignificantly) to the CG giving everyone a higher payout.

I'll go further and suggest that a ton more could be added to the store that likewise couldn't threaten my "winning", no-matter how real-world rich another gamer is. Even agressively good gear would be ok however that's not even necessary as I think they've already found the sweet spot; buying a jump-start that gets you into the activity quickly while still preserving the rewarding process of being able to improve and upgrade and tailor your gear. An on-ramp that protects the game loop so new players will get in and stay engaged.

From what I've seen here, the triibal chant of "P2W" has been used by those who, for whatever reason, have no wish to spend less than the cost of a takeaway on a new ship.
Yes, there are some who post here that appear to consider their 'investment' of kickstarting or buying a LEP should include the new ships as they release, but that is another topic...

Me? I have no problem giving FD a tenner or so for a toy I can play with now on my main account, then wait for the credits release for my alts to have the same, with the added entertainment of reading the declarations that I have 'won' again.

I don't think the grumbling will stop, buit it is quite entertaining, I admit! (and I hope that more ships worth having come our way this year, and FD raises a few £more to pay for even more new bits to be developed by doing so)

That’s the ship I wanted back in 2015 :)

Frontier needs to go back and rework some of the existing ships, make them more useful - FDL - I’m looking at you!
The FdL is fine as it is. It rewards skill more than any other ship, and is the best combat ship in the whole game in the hands of highly skilled pilots. Everyone else got the Python MK II.

I made my FDL into a titan bomber. was is the best "meta" ship? probably not but it got me into the 1 billion credit rank in the battle to save earth so It could not have been that bad.
of course now it's utility is.... shall we say limited but hopefully she will be needed again.

Not a member of the PvP community, but conversations with them back in the day would suggest they'd prefer more options than just reinforcing the meta ship?

I have had a thought, which others may have had.
Pay to win.
But payment can be money OR time. Of these two, I suspect that for those like myself, time is the more valuable.
So, if a CMDR can invest more time in the game they can progress faster and further thereby gaining an advantage. AKA, pay to win.
My 1p.
