The Waterfowl Winners Club! šŸ¦† 🪿 🦢

Well, all the talking about NA birds got me thinking again. I have a question for waterfowl fans! Frontier has decided that the new world gets 4 waterfowl species, and have asked you 🫵 to pick them! They can be all SA, all NA, or a mix of the two! Anything that is a waterfowl (Anseriformes) is allowed.

1. Mallard Duck - temperate duck for North America and Europe
2. King Eider - cold climate sea bird
3. White Faced Whistling Duck - small tropical duck for tropical houses
4. Southern Screamer - unique waterfowl that ranges into patagonia

I would go for two species for North America and two for South America:
1. Wood duck - nice, colorful and interesting looking
2. Canadian Goose - iconic and loud
3. Southern Screamer - curious looking bird!
4. Black Necked Swan - I love all swans

Wood duck, canada goose, whistling duck and southern screamer would be my choices

This was also my choices, though I struggled because I wanted to include a seabird in it. Despite how wonderful they are, sea ducks aren’t as common in captivity as other species. For understandable reasons of course.

Yeah. Id really like an eider or something, but with them i feel you really need some more shorebirds to make a mixed enclosure as just an eider on its own would look pretty lost

My local zoo mixes penguins and eiders, so they would feel less out of place to me

What zoo is that??
Whipsnade, they have a variety of sea birds mixed together, I believe it is African and Rockhopper penguins with Common Eiders and Eurasian Oster Catchers, but it has been a little while before I last went to that part of the zoo

Honestly it’s been over a year since we got our last waterfowl. While I personally want a duck, I think it’s much more likely we get a swan reskin or a goose. The rig for the cygnets works well for ducks as mods, but personally I just feel like it’s more likely Frontier will just outright ignore that and pick an ā€œeasierā€ route.

So far I think we could get:
  1. Black swan
  2. Trumpeter swan
  3. Canada goose
  4. Magpie goose
  5. Barheaded goose
  6. Nene
I’ll admit I have been a bit pessimistic about things lately (again, but being a bird fan for PZ nothing is new right?) still, I think it’s a fun topic. So Waterfowl Fans what do you guys think?

I doubt we'll get another swan. If we get another waterfowl it will most likely be a duck, follow by goose (but i can only think about canadian goose or maybe the nene as being popular enough to be considered, so duck feels more likely to me with much more well known or flamboyant options). I really think the next bird is probably going to be the secretary bird, the greater rhea or the american flamingo and maaaaaybe the grey crowned crane also has a good chance.

My personal hope though is for the next """waterfowl"" to be a pelican.

If it is a duck i admit the WFWD has grown on me a lot and the fact they can be used for american and african sections makes them double useful. Mallard i just see as a decorative item for ponds not as an atraction in itself. Mandarin duck is still my favorite though.

Yeah, I’ve been a bit pessimistic about it lately, but man I NEED A DUCK. I’m glad all my WFWD posting is starting to get more people to the dark side haha.

While not a waterfowl I do think the pelican is a great bird option, and I think the great white pelican would go great with the flamingos already in game. If we get the grey crowned crane with that we could have an amazing ā€œAfrican Wetlandsā€ habitat.

A duck is absolutely my priority and what I would expect to see next on the waterfowl front, I doubt frontier would do another swan. In regards to the Geese I think the Canadian and Nene are the most likely due to being the most popular but the Bar Headed Goose would also be fun. In terms of other oddballs I would really like the Southern Screamer which I don't think would be too much extra work for frontier.

I absolutely need 1 duck but honestly I would be fine with like 5 of them, the Mallard, Mandarin and WFWD are the ones I want the most but it would be fun to get a variety of small tropical ducks for mixed exhibits and tropical houses.

If I had to pick three more to be added I’d say we get one duck, one goose, then either another duck or swan.

My picks are mandarin duck, nene or Canada goose, then black swan

In the same way we got multiple antelope/ ungulates in one pack, my dream is if we get ducks Frontier gives us multiple ā€œflavorsā€ of them.

My idea is we get the following:
  1. One pond duck to go with the swan
  2. One tropical duck to go for rainforest habitats
  3. One sea duck
  4. One colorful duck
  5. Another duck to be a complement for the other ones
So my list would be something like this:
  1. Mallard duck
  2. White Faced Whistling Duck
  3. An eider/ barrows golden eye
  4. Mandarin duck
  5. Northern Shoveler/ Fulvous whistling duck

Idk if many people know what vegavis is.
For those that dont, its fragmentary fossil of a cretaceous water bird, which classification was always controversial since its discovery.

But now we found a new specimen which helped to clear up alot. And among other things it got firmly placed into anseriformes.
Which makes it our earliest known waterfowl, meaning our feathery friends are waddling and quacking around our planet for atleast 70 million years.

And idk why but i find the idea of an angry goose charging at some hapless dinosaur and being an absolute menace incredibly funny

Muscovy Ducks could be cool! The first duck priorities though are WFWD and something along the lines of Mallard, of course. I just think if we get more than two ducks the Muscovy is a cool and unique option...
