Elite / Frontier Elite Legend - ZX Spectrum 2021 - best 8-bit Elite?

Some nice things happened during gameplay yesterday. I captured my first ship which I then sold for 120,000. And I also ascended in Rating!

Hmmm, I’m not sure what I’m missing in my game then - I’ve just been to a tech level 19 planet (the highest level in the Galaxy map I’m in, and there’s only one of them) and it stocks all the high level Naval stuff but no ship capture system. I wonder if I have to scoop the Thargoid equipment first?

Edit: scooped another cloacking (sic) device last night which I hadn’t got around to purchasing for the Python. Hopefully whatever flag is needed for the SCS to become available will be set at some stage and I’d just missed it while in the Cobra.
The capture system was just available for purchase, but since buying it I haven't seen it available again. When I saw it available, that was the first time I'd seen it so I snapped it up. It was pretty soon after arriving in Galaxy 14 I think, right after a Supernova mission.

Thargoid Invasion message received today - Galaxy 8 is being invaded! I had a quick trip to galaxy 8, blimey this is going to be difficult!

I’m in Galactic Map 24 and haven’t seen the capture system or had the Thargoid War mission - I think I’ll start jumping back to the early maps to see if I can trigger whatever I missed 👍

I thought I’d snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, just then!

After getting through to the Thargoid station vicinity without anything different dropping from the aliens (just alloys and Tharglets) I decided to flash-save my game and head back out towards the system star, and about three encounters later a destroyed Thargoid only spawned one bit of debris - and it was heading directly away from me at a faster than normal pace.

I managed to lock a cargo drone onto it and let it fly - and got super excited to see a cargo pod loop up and around towards me.

Then it smashed into my hull, knocking my front shields down.

Cargo hold was already full 😅

What I called myself at that point would be nowhere near printable in the forum 😂

After reverting to the save point I repeated my steps, and thankfully after a few encounters I managed to bag the same type of Thargoid - after discarding several tons of cargo first, just to be on the safe side!

After taking out the enemy station I jumped to the nearest system, a Tech level 14 Democracy, and guess what was in the Equipment page?

Result!!!
😁

Looks like the Alien Computer was the trigger I was missing - hopefully now I’ll get the next mission(s).

Generation Ships, I believe?
Edit: scratch that, just got the MAYDAY! message for the Thargoid galaxy 8 invasion.

Yeah, brace yourself!

I've been on that for a few days now. Have been promoted once. It's not immediately clear what needs doing but I'm muddling through.

With the Thargoid computer, use D to switch modes and you'll see the new option only when you are carrying Alien Items. You basically lock on target and fire the Alien Item which then fires its own laser and fights on your behalf. When the target is destroyed the Alien Item, if it survives, then returns to your cargo hold automatically cargo-drone style, without any intervention! You will find these very handy for dealing with the stealth Thargoids you are about to encounter!

Thankfully I had about 15 Tharglets in my hold when I scooped up the computer so I was able to try it out straight away - I’ve found you can target the same ship multiple times. Most Tharglets I’ve managed to launch on one enemy is three before they zapped it. Makes a good option to launching a missile at a Stealth Thargoid, as you say.

Galaxy 8 is a nightmare so far - the system I’ve jumped to has continuous Thargoid encounters, like the Thargoid Station mission but dialled up to Anarchy levels 😅

Your first few missions in the war are to rescue refugees which, just like the nova mission, replaces any cargo you have. I've found it good tactics therefore to draw out the destruction of the first thargoid encountered in a new system to make it spit out a few Tharglets which can be collected. You can also use jump gates quite successfully in systems that have them.

I was unfortunate in my first Galaxy 8 system - it was a Multi-Government so a high spawn rate for encounters. I had to jump away to a different system where eventually I managed to get to the station. No evacuation mission yet, but I’ll try to choose high tech systems for the jump gates 👍

Edit: just been ripped from WitchSpace by a cluster of Thargoids when jumping between two systems - I know it’s just the enforced jump glitch/cheat repurposed but it was cool to get unexpectedly hyperdicted by the aliens 😁

I've managed to get promoted to Major, the mission then becomes one of station-destroying. No problem, I've done that before. Sneak up to the station, cloak, fire missile, job done.

Unless you get ambushed by about 8 Thargoid ships all at once and get shredded in about 10 seconds! Escape pod ends up with "Ship boarded by Targons (SIC), they show no mercy"

I've had a few goes at this now, and I can't see a way past it. Ship is a Boa.
Thargoid ambush. I count at leat 5 at the start.

I've given up (temporarily) on the Thargoid missions. I just can't get past the blockade. I've tried cloaked/not cloaked, running on fuel injectors/going slowly, Q-bombing then running. I did manage to survive one blockade but my shields hadn't fully recharged when another 5-6 Thargoid ships all appeared form nowhere and finished me off. I think it's the games way of saying NO ENTRY.

I'm now back in 23/24 building up some cash and remembering what normal combat looks like! I upgraded to the Anaconda too. Same 7 energy banks, 6 missiles and a whopping 750t of cargo space. It also doesn't have the crap scanner display of the Boa.

Let me know how you get on.

Back in Galaxy 8 now, and have managed to destroy 5 occupied stations by using jump gates, firing an ECM hardened missile whilst cloaked. It's pretty easy really. I then hyperspaced away and docked at another station. When I checked the local map data the system still showed as occupied. I wonder if it's necessary to destroy any military and repair stations too?

Also wondering if there are any ships tougher than the Anaconda, and are there any Tech 20 planets I don't know about, or is 19 the highest tech level?

I’ve never seen a Tech 20 planet, 19 is the highest I’ve seen and there was only one at that level in that Galaxy map.

I’m still doing the rescue missions in Galaxy 8 - and getting well paid for it. I’ve found a system that is under siege with a jump gate, so I can use that to load up on refugees, then jump to Galaxy 9 to offload them at another system with a jump gate, sell the 100g of gemstones, rinse and repeat.

I don’t know what the trigger levels for the missions are (are you’re obviously ahead of me there) but I read something about destroying a Thargoid mothership being the end-piece for the War scenario, so perhaps we cannot cause the aliens to leave a system?

A new thing I encountered after being ripped out of WitchSpace by the Thargoids (after destroying them, of course) was one of the fabled Generation Ships:

Okay.

I've been promoted twice and am now Colonel. The mission is to destroy the Thargon command base which is my game is "near the planet ISRI"

Predictably, ISRI does not have a jump gate.

I've tried this several times now and keep coming up against the impenetrable wall of 6-7 Thargoid ships which all appear at once. I've tried different tactics and even tried going around but can't even make a dent before I get shredded. It's getting a bit boring now to be honest so I'm looking for hints, or maybe even a poke to give me the thrgoid energy unit and laser.

EDIT: I should post on here more often. Immediately after this post I have found the Thargon base and destroyed it with minimal resistance. I am now a Brigadier General with the mission of destroying Thargon ships until they leave the galaxy!

Bah.
If the translation I read was correct, then the Thargoid base is in deep space near the system of that planet. It might be possible to fly out of a nearby system, transit deep space and find the base that way instead of jumping to the target system and trying to fight your way out of it.

I have now made my to the highest number Galaxy - 48, and have triggered the Thargoid ship-capture mission, and been equipped with the Naval ship capture system.

Have been flying around systems in Galaxy 48 and only seen two of the new Thargoid ships, and I've even bee forcing with-space jumps to deliberately encounter Thargoids but this doesn't seem to yeild any of the new ship kind. I've now triggered a Nova mission in 48 and have been sent all the way back to 1. I wonder if I will encounter any new Thargoid ships in 1, or if I need to make my way back to 48? Time will tell, I suppose.

With the Naval ship capture system I've managed to snag an Asp, an Adder and a Cobra Mk1. I assumed the Asp would be decent but it's still not as well specced as the Anaconda, which seems to be the top ship.

Thargoid ship-capture mission is now completed, and I am on the hunt for the Thargoid heavy cruiser, which is proving tedious. Anyone have any clues? I know which galaxy, other that that it's supposed to be at "an outlying planet". I've given it about 5 hours of playing time searching for it so far.
