Based on the colony selection map that pops up, it appears to be ~15 as of yesterday. (my colony is 10.2 ly from my home station.)

i just hope we eventually are able to branch from ANY existing human system, i wanna build a colony off from one of those asteroid bases since theres a system i discovered about 100LY from a nebula base i really really want to colonise since it was my first ever system to fully discover

All Minor factions that get a slot in colonized systems already have a home system, so yes they can be forces to retreat, unless FD allows players to make new factions into colonized systems.
If they increase it to 25 LY, that means i'll need a chain of 48 systems to get to the nearer of my preferred two systems to colonize.
So am I right in thinking we are not going to see the various stages of starport construction as originally shown in this video? i.e. phase 1 after week 1 and so on. That's a pity.
easy solution - daisy-chain outposts (10 weekly ticks) and you are there

Not sure if i'll be up for that. Will wait and see. Even if they upped it to 100LY, that's still a lot of work. And that's just to get there. Then i'd have to start developing it.

true, honestly i think system ownership could have system to relinquish ownership and allow another cmdr to claim it without resetting the system, so anyone daisy chaining can open systems for someone else if they don't wish to commit to that system in the long termno pain, no gain

Counterpoint: If it was easier it would more likely encourage people to fully develop systems rather than starting out, making a single station, then quitting due to the grind.
Also, what would it block? There's quite a few systems in the galaxy. People throwing down additional systems helps expand the range and opens up many more systems to colonization.

Yep, for some reason the launcher server status switched from "down" to "good", but I'm experiencing the same issues. I'd give it an hour or two.
