Is it time to decom the carrier?

If anything the Passive Income from System Colonisation has now introduced the potential to counter-act the only real negative of owning a Fleet Carrier, the running costs.
One of my new goals in the game is to build up a system to cover my FC bills, and if I can go even beyond that, then I'll install a few more optional extras to make good use of it.

IIRC it is said that the max income per colony system is 5,000,000 so in my case that would be 3 systems needed if my FC is not moving much.

Over the years, many people have claimed to be members of the Dark Wheel, to have identified some or all of the group's members, or to have discovered the group's location, but the contradictory nature of these claims suggests that most of them, if not all, are untrue.

when i do go out for a jaunt in the black, just picking a random route using carrier route plotter .my fc is always ahead of me and i fly to it,and i fly the route stopping to run around a planet or three in my srv, never know what might crop up,would i decommision no i wouldnt, why should i ,the upkeep is easy enought.keep it is my advise.

I have purchased my carrier and I am getting to finally enjoy it. I don't expect it to be very useful for colonisation in the Bubble at the present moment though. Servers/codebase/whatever-it-is still seems to be strained enough to make FC colony hauls impractical compared to a souped-up T9.
I find it quite handy parked in the system I am colonizing.
  • Swapping modules for range vs cargo
  • Switching ships. Large and medium. Medium for visiting the completed stations.
  • Dumping excess commodities. Or picking them up.

I had 3 carriers, but decommissioned one a couple of months ago. I added a shipyard to one of my alts and transferred the other alt's ships there. The shipyard upkeep is cheaper than having the extra carrier.

I was tempted to bring the offline carrier back when CMM Composite was so rare, but there's no need now.

My primary gameplay is bounty hunting and the carriers give me large landing pads in systems that don't have them or might have them 10k ls out. I could probably get by with 1, but having 2 comes in handy when gathering mats with 1 and delivering with the other

How much do you make with bounty hunting to be able to afford upkeep for 3 carriers?

I was just thinking to myself, given the awful jump times we're now seeing for carriers, it might be time to just decommission it. I don't do colonisation (it doesn't appeal) and I don't have many mats up for sale on my bartender.

It's convenient for offloading data during a long exploration trip, but old school explorers don't seem to need the FC.

Then there's the fact your crew don't know who you are, tritium movement needs a better mechanism than via ship and mining said fuel is such a chore.

I know all that sounds like I've already made up my mind, but I haven't.

What are your thoughts?
ED Co-pilot and Voice attack, and the FC recognices you... ;) with a little setup... so depends on... and storage plus you have youre own base to always fall back on wherever you lay your hat... thats youre home, ;) but on the FC!..... i though have my fully equiped.... so it cost me ish..45 mil every week... and thats nothing compare to what you earn in the game! but hey... its all about comfort and taste! up to you! I guess it'd be nice to set things up so colonies offset FC Upkeep but, really, it'd just be something you'd do for the sense of achievement rather than out of necessity.

I mean, you've got to do something when you're playing ED and if you fancy a bit of pew-pew then you can take wing BHing missions that pay Cr2-3m a pop, complete half a dozen of them in an hour and there's a week's FC Upkeep without even really trying.

The difference is that the Passive income from Colonisation neatly tallies against the Passive costs of Fleet Carrier upkeep. If they are balanced then I'm not 'losing credits' while taking a break from the game.

Of course it's not out of any necessity, or even achievement. Much more a sense of neatness.

It will be interesting to see the actual amount received each week when the more prolific architects exceed the 5 million income, and how brutal the 'tax' imposed after that amount is.

I have the gut feeling that income will be capped at 5 mill, regardless of the actual amount paid each week - we'll see.

Yesterday bought my first FC ever. Only to store somewhere couple of TDC (we don't know yet what class is going to be FSD on Corsair and other ships this year) and some Meta-Alloys. I know it sound stupid, but no other purposes at the moment 🤷‍♂️.

It's worth the credits just to be able to store stuff. Some years ago people were saying they wanted to rent cargo space in stations; now we can.

So how much is the cheapest upkeep FC setup? Just to store goods and ships?

You don't even need to take missions to cover the costs.

About 20-30ish minutes in a HazRes (or a bit longer in a HighRes) with a KWS, then a quick trip to claim them in an ALD stronghold system (the 40% bonus to bounty payout is available to everyone, pledged or not) and you can easily pay for several weeks of upkeep on a base carrier.

About 10Mcr a week; just under I think.
Just under 10Mcr a week is with the refuel, repair and rearm services installed, which is what mine has.

Something completely different: I just visited your carrier. Thank you so much for the 10 Faction Associates … I think. After three years I'm back and all this Odyssey stuff is new to me and until a couple hours ago I didn't know that one can buy mats from carriers. So, you saved me some (a lot?) grinding.

And then I stumbled over this thread and though that the name looks familiar. What a coincidence and such a good opportunity to thank you personally :D

Edit: it might have been Troop Deployment Records.
