Yes, I see that but the actual terrain affected is often well beyond those buildings, like the excavation site is 2-3 times that extent. It would be nice to see a blue/green oval representing this in addition to the blue/green buildings.
Here's an extreme example of odd terrain generation where the game raised a big plateau to support a small settlement placed on a mountainside for some reason. Preferably the settlement should be placed into the hill, not placed up on a plateau that looks out of place.

As I have said a few times now, that isn't the final product. The way that looks will be nothing like what it'll look like when it's completed and the actual settlement is shown.
A reason that looks so raised up is the work site takes up a vast area. When you're placing the settlement, you do not see that at all, you only see the blue->green ghost image of the settlement. If you placed it anywhere near any kind of uneven terrain, the game places the work site so that it is level with the highest part of the terrain that it demands (around centre-origin, I would hazard a guess), which is
not the same as what your settlement will demand.
It's temporary. You may still see some flattening when it's all done. It is very unlikely going to look anything close to that image though, by virtue of the actual settlement being much smaller.
Doesn't look bad but looks a bit out of place. I was expecting it to be closer to the level of the base of the mountain, dug into the hillside more, not put up on an artificial plateau.
What would be really great would be the option to delete/remove a newly placed settlement when the effects on nearby terrain are not to one's liking.
It will be! Whatever you saw when you placed the blue ghost of the settlement is roughly where it will be. If you placed it too close to the levitated terrain, there may still be some "ridging" at the lower terrain, and "cutting away" at the higher, but it won't be nearly as extreme as in that image.
All that said, you have chosen
quite a slope there (to me, you have suggested that is the "base" of the mountain, but the terrain does appear to continue to slope down, towards the camera?) So I imagine there will be a ridge and a cutaway when it's done. Just not so dramatic as that, because (and I repeat

), the work site is gigantic.
