The future of Elite Dangerous

the only thing that i think fit less with braben's vision is the odyssey update ( first person mode ). In any ways, me i dont do these missions, i always stays on my ship.
You must have missed those KS videos where he was excitedly talking about getting out of his ship and hunting dinosaurs. I don't remember seeing any vids where he was excitedly talking about starting a PMF, controlling the galaxy or hand building a colony though.

If we're talking about his vision, I remember him talking about how it would be disappointing if we landed on a planet and it was just a differently coloured height map

Which is exactly what we've ended up with
Probably why since they got Odyssey to a place where it's more or less acceptable compared to launch it's basically been left alone apart from a few little things like powerplay data appearing in settlements.

Sometimes stuff doesn't work out like you wanted and you have to admit defeat and move on. Not everything gets to be a phoenix from the ashes.

i am in danger of going way OT now (sorry!) but seeing as you mentioned powerplay data.

i was wondering can i do anything with that and does it expire in my inventory? i am currently miles away from my pledged power but is there any use for it where i am now, or can i hold on to it until am being in my powers space and use it there, or is it just un needed guff? i think i have collected a bunch of it whilst getting genetic medicine to unlock and engineer

It works the same way as any other data, so it doesn't expire or go anywhere. Basically your options are:
  • Sell it at a bar
  • Put it in your suit inventory and drop it on a planet somewhere.
  • Keep it until you can hand it in (which is the system you got it if for reinforcing your own power or the nearest allied stronghold or reinforced system to where you picked it up for acquisition and undermining).
It's worth quite a few merits, so it is a good idea handing it in if you can.

To be honest that sounds more like your vision than Braben's, he always seemed to have on foot in mind, presumably time and funds allowing.
Odyssey was a disaster. I really don't care if something was someone's "vision" . That doesn't make it a good idea.

Ship interiors would be another really stupid one. How would that even work? "Oh I'm being interdicted by a ganker, let me run back to the cockpit for 10+ seconds.....DEAD". Like come on think about it people.

i have thought about it and i disagree....... there are plenty of ways they could be done really well (but with the small print that the DDF ships crew would also probably need to be part of the same expansion which included them).

Ody was a disaster...... but that isnt necessarily down to the content, tho i would say it is far more limited than i would like, and compared to other 3rd person shooter games (Hell divers springs to mid) mechanically it is incredibly shallow and clunky. but i have still had some fun out of it.

For me the ody content would not have been my choice, but it could have been decent but it just was not implemented especially well and then combined with awful performance at launch which bought my - at the time cutting edge - 3090 gpu and amd 5800x to its knees.

I agree there are ways it could be done well. There were ways they could have done Trailblazers well too and look how that turned out. Ship interiors would require a total re-imagining of how we engage with our ships and the content around our ships. I don't hate FDEV, far from it, but I'm not sure I trust them to do it without screwing it up and then taking literal years to get it right. Odyssey isn't bad now, I agree. But how long did it take to get it to be just "okay"?

Also great point about the performance hit. The game feels unplayable sometimes with this new frame-stuttering issue since Trailblazers. How bad a hit would ship interiors be? I shudder to think about it.

Give it to another member of that power, or an ALT account.
Drop it on your ship (tends to clip through ground) and have the other pick it up.

If you have multiple accounts have them all store 1000 pp data then hand in the 2k+ data all at once before tick :)
but dont tell Fdev !

Please, talk me through the equivalent of Stellar Forge as it was in FE2.
There was an excellent (if very technical) examination of how the Galaxy was generated in the Frontier duo of games but unfortunately it looks like the website is now dead. It used to be at Jongware/Galaxy1.

Very clever coding by D. Braben.

Edit: internet archive to the rescue - https://web.archive.org/web/20210421052348/http://www.jongware.com/galaxy1.html
Edit2: …and I’m assuming Manfred was talking about the spaceflight instead of the Galaxy.

I’m confused, is it 1000000% not his vision or 40% his vision? I’m beginning to think these figures aren’t accurate.

If it's 40% is vision and then has 25000 times as much stuff that is not his vision added to it, it is both 40% his vision and 1000000% not his vision, or thereabouts.

It's like if you want a latte, which might be 40% milk and 60% coffee, but you get a half-cup of milk diluted into a 55 gallon drum of urine. 40% of your latte is in there, somewhere.

Where does it say ED is not growing? New players are still joining after 10 years. In March 2025 ED had a record amount of peak concurrent players (13,254) on Steam. The previous time ED had this many was June 2021 (15,554 peak concurrent players).

I don't mind that they sell ships for ARX to fund development. Fdev could make a lot more by selling ship interior cosmetics.

Growth, in this sense, means an increase in revenue. Adding more players doesn't cut it, unless the rate of new players, or other new expenditures on the game, is ever upwards.

but the game is awesome, i love most of everything about the game.

The game is awesome. I love almost nothing about the game, but I love enough.

It's not like anyone else is selling milk and I can get the urine content low enough to be tolerable.

I assume revenue has increased too due to ships for ARX sales.

The Odyssey launch was a disaster due to bugs and performance. Now it's a good expansion.

Ship interiors could be monetized very much which benefits Fdev to create (hopefully) more DLC for ED. Braben discussed ship interior gameplay and there's artwork. A bunch of games have interiors + gameplay. For example Wildgate.

With the interiors of stations and FC's already right there, we should be able to get Odyssey style gameplay already. I mean who wouldn't want to Die Hard a Coriolis?
