Newcomer / Intro Stumbling my way through

Wanted to introduce myself and meet the community.

Elite Dangerous is my first space sim and online game since the early 2000s. Man have things changed!

Not sure why I chose Elite, but happy I did. Man is this game a monster, I'm grateful for all you YouTube content providers. I'd really be lost without you. Lol

Anyhow, look forward to possible running into you in space. We'll, Just as soon as I get out of the tutorial phase. :)

The main thing is that you have found this sub-forum. There are a lot of friendly contributors who will happily help in any way they can - just ask. (y)

P.S. I'm late to the Elite Dangerous game too, long-time flight simmer stumbled across this game after backing Starship Simulator kickstarter.

Thank you sir, I used to spend a lot of time in flight Sims. I ran with Night Rangers in F22 lightning and 75th Rangers in WWII online back in the day.

I have time to play again now that I've reache'd retirement. Plus it'll keep me out of my brides hair.

Once again, thank you for getting back to me. Have a great day!

The game has been through a lot of changes since it launched so check the date created or last edited on any guides you read or view as they could be no longer relevant or worse.

I learned that real quick while starting to move from keyboard and mouse to my hotas. (X52pro)

But I've been able to take the older information and use it as a history guide. Kinda interesting for sure.

I think my next step after completing the in-game mission tutorials will be to understand the main gameplay and how they all interact. ED is so different from other games with clear goals to achieve. I've not been able to wrap my head around that part of the game. "What is the goal of ED"

Now, back to more reading about ED. Lol

I appreciate any suggestions and recommendations.

Thank you.

The goal of ED is to have fun while doing those activities in ED you find interesting at the time, while interacting or not with other players as you choose.

So many options. Like a kid in a candy shop. I want it all. Just not sure what "all" is yet. Lol

.. "What is the goal of ED"
....

The goal of ED is to provide a sandbox filled with many varied facets. There is no "path" to follow and no "endgame" - you just follow what appeals to you, ignoring what doesn't.

I will be honest and say that the first things I did was gather some credits (followed the cops in a RES and shoot ships they had reduced to nearly dead), went to pick up some (engineering) materials, visited Felicity to get the frame shift drive increased range mod and then I went out to get the Guardian module blueprint to "unlock" the frame shift drive boosters.

Doing those things let me learn a lot about the game and made further travel so much easier (many fewer jumps to get to the next thing I wanted to do).

Mainly, do what you want to do, there is no right way to play the game.

Outstanding! I'm sure I will be rereading your post and deciphering what all that means. I think this could be a forever game. Apparently there is no end in sight. Thank you.

Take it slow, and read the hints the game is throwing at you. While you're in your starter Sidewinder (or in an ARX-bought ship), even dying is just a minor inconvenience, so "do all that you know and try all that you don't".
Apart from that - new players often find themselves short on Credits. There could/should be a Community Goal (CG) announced tomorrow, usually running for a week or so. Getting there in your unmodified starter Sidey could be a chore (you should have, or could earn, enough credits for a better FSD (Frame Shift Drive), that'd make the trip easier). But with the way the CGs have been run in the last time, that's an easy minimum of 50 MCr. waiting to be picked up (100 MCr. if it's a dual CG and you're not fussy about playing on both sides of the fence).
Ah - scratch that. There is a competitive CG running right now: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forums/elite-dangerous-community-goals/ and https://inara.cz/elite/communitygoals/ that should go for two weeks. Tier 1 hasn't been reached yet, so we don't know yet what the payout will be - but, from the last CGs, 50 MCr. per side in the top 100% is a reasonable bet. All you need to do is to get your ship over to LP 855-34, equip some cargo racks, a mining laser and a refinery (optionally a collector limpet controller) and mine two tons of Platinum. Then sign up to both CGs and deliver one ton of Platinum to each of the CG stations.

Oh, and: if you actually want to succeed at delivering that Platinum, don't fly in Open. CGs usually bring out the seal clubbers, and your starter Sidey has no chance in PvP combat.

If the above is too confusing - you got up to two weeks (depending on the CG participation - they might end earlier) to find out what and how to do :) . And from the payouts in this and the last CG, I have the suspicion that 4 more CGs of this type are lurking in the wings (there are 12 powers, we had Archer vs. Patreus in April and got Winters vs. Grom now, so there's 8 more that didn't have a go).

Edit:
Ok, so this is new:

So, you can only grab the cash from one side.

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

Maybe you've already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Also check out the inara.cz website with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

I had to laugh when you said " If the above is too confusing". Heck, I'm still looking for the ignition to my ship. LMBO! Truly, thank you for offering guidance. I can see I'm gonna need to jump in and get my feet wet. Thank you!

Thank you sir, I had found most of those and bookmarked them. Not sure how to use them, but at least I know they're there. Thank you for sharing this.

It looks like ED tutorials might be offline. Hmmm

The Pilot Training Videos (if that is what you meant) are still available, just the links to them are duff:

You might also be interested to know that there was (is ish) a Manual - the latest it got up to was game version 2.4 and the only link I have for that is:

Some of that is out of date but the basics are there.

Welcome, Commander! Have fun, fly (not so) safe and, most importantly, have fun (again).

welcome to the galaxy cmdr! o7
id like to also mention that if you have any questions, feel free to seek any twitch streamer (many of them are elite partners). twitch community is an unofficial 24/7 helpdesk ^^ we have been previously called aggressively helpful, but thats only because we all love this game :p
