Is it just me, or is bio-exploration not worth it?

Elite Observatory is your friend ...

You need to scan plants that nobody has scanned before. If someone has scanned them before, skip it. Go to the next system.

Of course there's no way of knowing if someone has scanned a plant species before on a particular planet, so you are only left with the option of checking if the planet has a "first footfall". If it doesn't, then it's certain that nobody has scanned those plants. (If it does have someone's "first footfall" then there's no way of knowing.)
If you don’t see a first footfall on the planet in the system map, nobody has landed to scan any bios on it.

Okay, dumb question... how do I know if a planet has already had a first footfall before I actually land on the planet and set foot on it? 🤔
If you don’t see a first footfall in the system map, then it means nobody has been on the planet to scan the bios.

Don't. Scan. Bacteria!

A single first discovery Stratum Tectonica will give you 100m.

If a system only has bacteria jump on, set your star filter to the correct star types for Stratum, use something like Elite Observatory to assess the planets so you don't have to travel to each one and map it to find out what's on it.

Unless of course that particular bacteria is missing from your codex, but you only need one sample, not the usual three to complete the codex entry - Gotta catch them all (as one stunning franchise still says!)

Well yes of course, that's a given, always do that!

You could be missing Bacterium Nebulus, Bacterium Informem and Bacterium Scopulum, which as first discoveries give you 42-45 million each.

You could be, but you have named two of the hardest to find bacterium there, in the 20 minutes it takes you to find 3 samples of Informem you could have collected samples from 3 different instances of Tecotnica and have 300m with first discovery bonus!

Well.... sorry if I wasted anyone's time, but this is all starting to feel more like a job than having fun playing a game. It seems that with all the responses I've gotten here, there is no "one way" of actually finding what I need. It gets awfully confusing when everyone is doing it differently, everyone saying what the "right" way is, contradicting everyone else. Sure, it would be nice to be rich, but what's the point if it isn't any fun?

Until another day... o7

The joy is that there isn’t just one way to do it which means that people can use the way they enjoy most rather than be forced down a single path that might not work for them.

But if you aren’t having fun do something else, that is another joy of the game there are so many things to do.

Elite's greatest weakness is the time grind. I stand it by changing styles, and, long breaks. Colonization brought me back this time.

Up until a few weeks back I used the EDDI add-on but recently found the Exploration Buddy add-on and find it a very handy tool indeed. Shows me a neat breakdown of what is worth scanning etc and keeps an estimated value of the finds. It also works well alongside EDDI with no problems I have found.

I use this too.

I agree.
I took me 10 days. 10 DAYS to reach Elite rank in Exobio and cash in more than 10 billions.
And I had to do MY own research (on Google) and a bit of experimenting to undersrand where to go, and what to scan.

Seriously, like everything in ED, it's overwhelming at first, but there are plenty of good advices to quickly learn and avoid mistakes.
