The New Content Drought

After the Odyssey launch, and its aftermath (npi), its seems unlikely that we'll ever get another Big DLC.
Trailblazers would have been that paid DLC, I imagine, but they're going the other route by releasing these new things as free expansions and getting income from early-access ship sales, pre-built "jumpstart" ship sales, and overpriced cosmetics.

If it works, it works, I guess, but I do rather wish someone in the Elite monetisation office would be of the "selling more cheaper things actually makes money faster than selling fewer expensive things" school of thought, then bring back all the cosmetics seemingly discontinued for no reason while rebalancing the prices to a bit less of a rip-off.

You could also apply that logic to the regular FSD reverse-engineered off Thargoid drive technology. I have more doubts about the SCO though because it causes the same HUD glitching effect as being near Thargoid ships does when it's active (on new ships as well as old ones) and somehow that makes me think there is an actual piece of Thargoid stuff in there with enough engineering to make it compatible (and not corrode everything in the ship). Surely there's a reason they want one of those drive components to give you one...
SCO is literally reverse-engineered from the Thargoid Titans, that was very publicly acknowledged when the first SCO drive was first released.

I'm still hoping for "an upgrade" to the SCO module that makes them work better with older ships, although if FDev continue to pump out new ships the way they have been over the past 18 months, there will be no reason for anyone to still use the older designs; which is a bit of a shame, I guess.

Why use a T9 or even a Cutter when you can use a Panther Clipper that has native SCO support? Why use a DBX or Conda when a Mandy will jump just as far (if not farther)? Why use a Python when you could carry more in a T8? etc...

I already know that, but it's one thing to reverse-engineer completely and make a "new" copy, or to use the original tech simply made compatible to surrounding human systems. I would say, anyway, but I don't expect Frontier to pull the rug out under SCO users that way. Probably most of everybody's using it at this point.

... and even just reducing the fuel use of the non-optimized SCO would go a long way. I'd probably still use a Cutter over the Panther though, if the latter handles as I expect it to.

There's scope for a competitor to SCO to be released by Sirius, or for them to redesign the "original FSDs" to have some of the SCO advantages while fewer drawbacks, perhaps?

Sirius FSD mk 2 that has partial SCO boost (but not as fast as the current SCO ones) and increased range while using less fuel, heating up less, and being more controllable (so essentially the way SCO works on the new ships)???

That plus the initial screaming sound just before the SCO really kicks in. I don't like the Thargoids but just the thought it's possible there's a living piece of them in there being tortured makes me want to go back to the old drives.

I'm pretty sure that already happened. Or at least in those circles I frequent most it's generally suspected that attack on Achilles' SCO drive manufacturing facility was Sirius... covertly.

I'm hoping it will have a major impact in PowerPlay by having LYR go head to head with Mahon just to further shake things up.

we were talking about thargoid lore and I was clearing up some of the "mystery".
Well I haven’t read the novels (probably in part because of the reason you mention), but I was just saying that because the in-game depiction (should you look beyond the surface) doesn’t really indicate the Thargoids are “extreme xenophobes”.

I would agree if you said they mostly don’t care about humans if we don’t mess with them, though. Because they probably do not care. And we’ve not really given them reasons to either.

This year we have long periods with nothing new.
  1. Vanguards is planned for Summer 2025. Q3 is until the end of September 2025.
  2. Panther Clipper Mk II was unveiled in April. 28th of May is probably gameplay video and specs info. Release date could be in July 2025.
  3. 3rd new ship in Autumn = probably September or October 2025.
  4. Secret new feature and 4th new ship in Winter 2025 = probably December 2025.
So May, June till late July we get nothing new except maybe a few Trailblazers patches to fix bugs and improve some stuff.

Whatever the new feature is I think it won't be any of the top 5 requests.

How will you survive the new content drought?

Update: ED has a revival of player activity, an increase of significant updates and ships which is great, but how many more years do we have to wait for big DLC such as Earth-like worlds, water worlds, gas giants, high metal content worlds with lava (volcanism), when can we land on the moon in Sol, EVA gameplay, ship interiors, graphics upgrades (fix anti-aliasing, more level of detail for the old low polygon (mega) ships and structures, path tracing / global illumination). If ED had more resources and a bigger team then we could have some of the most requested features sooner.
Bro, 2 months isn't a "content drought" wth is wrong with you?

There are alot of niggles.
Released stuff that's broken and not addressed. Thats number 1 niggle for me. Yeah they do fix alot of bugs but some just stay as is. For mths if not years.
Networking within elite is not stable.
If you've ever tried bump stopping a victim with a view to looting the ship. 2 of us. And all of a sudden after we've disabled his engines he just ups and flys away! Doesn't happen in solo. Just if your networked with another cmdr. Drives me mad that bug.
Piracy does need a pass.
As does exploration.
Lots of qol needed for trailblazers.
Powerplay could do with some love too.
That piracy bug is ancient...years old. Never addressed.
AA is pants. Never addressed.
The overall engine and let's be frank, the ageing graphics ingame.
There's so much I've not even scratched the surface.
All this and yet I love this game.
In VR it's unique.
So I play hoping it'll get better. And it has over the last few years.
Just wish love would be given to legacy bugs and the engine as a whole.
Rant over @!

I’m happy to plod along whilst playing other games. My view is there isn’t going to be any major DLC’s in the near future with the number of current players. Frontier are still coming out of the red and likely to concentrate on titles which have the potential to bring in the big bucks, which Elite doesn’t.

How will Fdev implement:
  1. Earth-like worlds (accessible)
  2. Water worlds
  3. Gas Giants
  4. Metal-rich worlds with volcanism
  5. EVA
  6. Ship interiors
  7. Player outposts (customizable)
  8. More accessible areas inside stations
This must be monetized such as DLC, early access, subscription, cosmetics etc. Thargoids on foot could be a free update though.

I'd guess the answer to those questions is likely to be:

"Not at all"

I could potentially see them doing 8 as a means of providing more on-foot interactivity for derelict megaships and such (there could be a gameplay excuse then at least, preferably without any Thargoids involved - I remember the Dedicant), but I’m in agreeance that expecting it is probably a stretch. (Until/if we get it, anyway… two and a half years ago, I doubt anybody would have expected us to get the Titans either)

But the others, most likely not. I’m not sure how they would do the metal-rich worlds that are basically lava hellholes anyway, with most of the surface scorching hot to the point of largely being molten, or just inaccessible on foot/vehicle due to there being no really safe surfaces to touch down on.

… and I don’t think I want to imagine the FPS (as in, frames) nightmare that a volcanic eruption being modelled would be. Though they could also not because it’s unlikely they would be that frequent.

Maybe they won’t. 🤷‍♂️
Yeah, I had the impression that they're afraid the playerbase will implode if it isn't "real" enough. But at this stage I'm not sure most would care, and any issues like how ships handle in atmospheres could be hand waved away; much like how we're not supposed to have anti-gravity, yet all trash onboard outposts sits happily on the floor.

Eventually micrograv and static forces would settle everything on a surface so that one is not one I mind too much. The bubble tripling in size and the population magically expanding to fill it...🤯
