Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Nice to see some relatively clear-eyed stuff upvoted on the sub...

The stability and performance of the servers is excellent under 500 players. Occasional crashes recover smoothly, in my limited experience.

But there are so many other absolutely busted or ancient game systems that are even more obvious now. Inventory is an end-to-end travesty. Ship UI is awful and inconsistent. The whole situation with infinite instanced hangars and two or four or six station doors is unbelievably short-sighted. The keybinding system is so crushingly complex for new players and yet entirely undocumented. I could go on and on.

Long story short: I haven’t seen any substantial quality of life improvements.

The underlying problem is Star Citizen isn’t just an alpha, it is like eight poorly integrated alphas built by different teams. Nobody is willing to say ‘no’ to features, nobody is game designing the whole strategy, and nobody has time enough to make any progress on core features. The only good game systems are brand new systems, but teams need to release and move on, lacking the time to develop a good system into a complete system. So everything is tier 0, none of it works well together, and a lot of it eventually breaks or needs to be ripped out and replaced.
I enjoy the game (this year especially) but I’m pessimistic about CIG’s ability to make real progress toward reaching a releasable state, even just for the two star systems we have. CIG has exceptionally talented artists, designers, and engineers, but they lack strategic vision, leadership, and product management.

I read one of the comments where someone said you needed an SSD to avoid falling through a planet. Been playing games for a loooong time and I swear before long the white knights will claim you'll need a supercomputer to play SC flawlessly 🤷‍♂️

To be fair, SSD is a pretty standard requirement for modern (yes, I know ;) ) games.

Not sure how is that supposed to patch the holes in textures :D , but still.

I haven't used any mechanical spinner drives in my desktop rig for 4 years or so....I've got a few 2 or 4Tb 2.5" SATA SSD's shoved in a box on my spares shelf, but no mechanical drives at all....I don't even have a drive rack in my PC case. 🤷‍♂️

My current MB has 4 x m.2 slots, 2 x gen 5's and 2 x gen 4's eliminating the need for even SATA cable SSD's. If I get to the point where I need more than 12Tb of NVME space for games...I'll uninstall something :)

I honestly can't imagine anyone who's fairly into gaming would have any spinning rust in use for anything other than backup. All my internal storage is NVME/M.2 or SSD. My external is a 6TB spinner for immediate back up and there's 30TB in my NAS (24TB usable) for por*cough* media and longer term storage usage

I was the same, but I have recently bought a 4 TB NAS-quality drive, so that I can synchronise the same storage from my NAS into my PC. Just didn't get round to the technical side of it yet.

But for gaming? Forget about it! Gaming on HDD is pretty much dead, unless you want to play old titles.

I think it's because the client is authoritative for its movement. I tried to run SC from HDD and fell through floors and walls that didn't load in, yet.
I look forward to the shills bleating about how Rockstar should pay royalties or some nonsense.
Just wait until Rockstar sues CIG for patent infringement. I don't think they see SC as competition, though.

To be fair, making a good game doesn't imply it will sell well. There's ton of examples of great games that failed commercially, and the other way around manure level games that sell like crazy.

Now, bragging about BDSSE, putting other games ever made to shame, yadda yadda imply that CIG HAS to provide a game at the level of quality they claim they will do. Hence the Schrödinger Mess Eternal Alpha.

So you're saying Star Citizen has a chance?

Ship UI is awful and inconsistent.

Umm.. i thought one of the things they loved about SC was how the interfaces were different between each ship, rather than identical like in ED.

I've still got a mechanical. Its gold some old games stored on it and a backup of my VM.

Thanks for replying TNT!
I find this thread much more fun when there are people who are prepared to defend starcitizen here also :)
It’s clear that some folk such as yourself can enjoy the game and ignore how it’s got there, just as there’s some here who believe CR is scam artist who shouldn’t be given a penny and probably some degree of folks who think people enjoying SC have a screw loose!
Personally, I enjoy a balanced outlook in life as far as possible, mainly for my own health! I enjoy Golgots vids for their clear content and like that they are a tonic to counter CIGs misinformation. Although i think there are some peeps who are being exploited by cr, I have a good laugh at cig’s missteps and behaviour for sure, but certainly enjoy hearing from people who can cope with the game!
I don't think I'm the only enjoying playing Star Citizen though, and saying it so or stating I prefer to play it over other games, be it over Elite or No Man Sky or Starfield isn’t defending it.

Just stating an opinion which is as valid as any other. I enjoy playing it along with other games and do so in the limited time I got, if you don't enjoy SC and prefer Elite I don't think you have a screw loose. I'm fortunate to not have the kind of time to care about how games "got there" or the lives of their creators. The little I have I spend playing it or cherishing the moments played when possible. :)

If Star Citizen was such a bad game I don't think so much people would be playing and filling the servers with youtubers and streamers creating so much content 24/7. Specially we wouldn't see so many players who play both games spending more time playing it than other similar games. I think the constant updates along with the social and pvp aspect gives it the edge vs other similar games, as in, it ends up feeling more alive and engaging to experience.

My 2 cents ofc:

Going back in trying to catch some of the Capital Fleet action fun that was totally not possible to run on the engine!
After all, it's been a long time with everyone saying to buy and Idris, might as well try to fly one for free! ;)

Opinions may vary ;)

This is exactly where i am and hardly even log in anymore. Just bought Elite Dangerous on sale to fly around in without worry of having 30 min of getting ready (like in SC just) just to have the game spit in my face and waste my time. SC is so cool but it is unplayable and at this rate i don't think it ever will be in a decent state.

People stop playing this game! It is not playable. Your life is too valuable and there too many other games that are finished and work.
I have switched over to Elite Dangerous, doing missions, earning money, landing on planets. It all just works.
Eventually Star Citizen will be finished and incredible, now you are wasting your life!

Have been a backer since 2012.
Juste started to play Elite Dangerous last year. It's absolutely fantastic (of course, it's not perfect and could be much more, but still) and coming back here from time to time and seeing at what kind of problem this community is still stuck, it's kind of hilarious ... and so very sad.

This. This is the kinda stuff that just makes me so mentally drained w the game and just want something fresh, honestly I came from Elite Dangerous wanting a game that seemed like it was cared about more and now Elite is the game that seems like its cared about more 😭😭. I get so tired of all the bugs and glitches that cause me to lose tons and tons of progress I'm doing and for what? Like at least in elite dangerous they can spawn me almost exactly where I logged out. And while it happens sometimes in SC it's not very often. I especially hate it when I'm collecting a bunch of things from bunkers and random places to just collect for fun and then I randomly fall through my ship while QT'ing and lose absolutely everything because I can't track a ship further than 20km but oh no you can see the exact distance of your ship on the mobi glass but it just won't tell you at all where to go or where it is, which is oh so very fun [Fixed now, so long as you never change server ;)]. Honestly I joined in around 3.23.2~ and I stopped around 4.1 as much as I love the game, I think Elite is in a much healthier and better place than SC rn and I sincerely and really hope that it doesn't remain that way forever. I want to have fun in SC I want to do all these things they're showing off but it's so impossible. And sometimes it isn't even bugs at all that just make me want to play Elite more. It's the player base too, the player base is so absolutely toxic sometimes especially to the people that like to just mind their own business, if you see someone doing their NPC lifestyle and not harming a fly I don't understand why people feel like they HAVE to kill them. if it's a status like "I'm better than you" thing, ok fair I guess but let me quit ranting when I'm ahead, I just thought I'd share my piece even tho no one asked. Sorry

Etcetcetc.

Enoy your alpha sunshine. Your overblown tribal claims are still pure daft though ;)
