Why I like planetary ports for Colonisation.

I've never been denied docking at a large orbital station due to lack of available pads. Happens all the time at planetary ports though...
At least for me it is definitively not "all the time". But I agree, that happens with outposts (planetary and orbital).

What happens for me more often then lack of pads is blocked by incoming traffic gate of orbitals. I mean blocked such way you have to wait, even when flying manually.

Dont become convinced. Measure.
Take a stop watch. Look for two systems with orbitals and planetary settlements around the same planet.
After several years of use, I discovered only the other day that my X52 Pro throttle has a built-in stop watch function.

Anyway, I enjoy flying my cutter and usually prefer planetary landing because of the extra skill required to do it accurately.
The extra time either way doesn't matter because it's the flying that is fun.

I am thinking about throttle controller, or keyboard with macro keys. My usual "F2"+F+F to get preferred super-cruise speed (a bit less then 75%) is not optimal.
But I am not sure how precise it will be, I mean can I adopt to use it. I was always using very cheap joystick to drive on planets (the only way I could adopt to drive at all), and it is definitively not the device I want use in flight. X52 is quite expensive to buy just to find out it is useless for me. Would you recommend it for (relatively) old man?

As a 70+ year old man I would recommend the X52 Pro. Some have had reliability issues with it, but mine is at least 5 years old and has had zero problems.

Very interesting thread. I have to add that I use 2 cmdrs when hauling, so the time that matters to me is 'stick time'. The less I have to fly the ship, the faster things get done. Once an auto process takes over, I switch to the other ship. I usually do not have to wait, the ship is waiting on me. If it is still in auto-dock, I set the return course. This can be done without affecting the autodock. Planet landings take a bit more stick time, so when using 2 cmdrs, this can hold up my process. I must admit though, I enjoy landing on planets.
