Any recommendations for a non-engineered Cobra Mk V build for this CG? My 3 laser/2 multi cannon build is fine for bounty hunting but a bit short on firepower for these combat zones….

The answer is probably "no, ship CZs are intended for engineered ships with a lot more firepower" but five frag cannons (and a willingness to synthesise reloads mid-fight) is probably about as good as it gets in that case.

You can also do ground combat zones. Winning 4 high-intensity ground combat zones (cirka 1.5 hours including flight time from the station and back) got me over 40 million credits counting towards the CG and landing me in the top 25%.

Note that high-intensity ground combat zones is something you should have minimum G3 gear for, in my opinion.

Try the low CZs.
They contain the smallest ships, so easiest relatively to take out. Close to 7km or so, stop then pick a side, look for the enemy that has taken the most damage, take them out, and follow the NPC ships on your side as they move the next target. In this way you should always out-number (hence out-gun) the other side.

As you get better, try a medium. Listen out for the Enemy Spec Ops arriving because they tend to arrive closest to you and you do not want all of them tackling you at once.

Thanks. I don’t tend to do anything on foot other than exobiology, never been a fan of FPS really, and have basically zero interest in engineering anything! I’ll maybe have a play with it though - see how it goes.

Yeah that’s been my method so far, one-on-one with Eagles and Cobra Mk3 is fine, just takes a while - when bounty hunting my Cobra 5 makes very short work of small ships, but in the CZ it’s not quite the same!

That is typical of most CZs the NPC ships always take a while no matter what as they are actually built for a fight unlike the soft touches you find in a Haz RES.

If you want to do it solo, then it'll be hard. A non-engineered small ship, even the Cobra MK V, will either struggle with bringing enough firepower, or will need a lot of ammo synthesis.

A valid workaround could be to do it in a wing, though. But also note that Open might get you easily killed during a community event. If you prefer a somewhat saver environment for a ship not set up in a competitive way (no engineering means you are very vulnerable to hostile players), Mobius might be what you are looking for. The PG allows you to be in a moderated combat environment, and on their Discord you might also find some people willing to wing up with you.

Well at least on my side, if I don’t do more fighting, it seems unlikely to slip out of the 75% placement even with a second tier raise.

has to refrain from some comments about extending CGs like this now but not making Thargoid war balance such that it worked for multi-week states properly

... and yet the payouts in a HazRes are so much higher per ship.
But hey, there's no waiting between ships.

This was quite an eye-opener about how far things have progressed in my years away. My FDL was previously a relentless murder machine. I was admittedly very rusty, but my legacy mods were definitely NOT cutting it against those ships. I had to go do a whole bunch of re-engineering to get my kill times back to what they were. But comfortably in the top 50% now, so that's good.

Combat Zones are really not much different than Extraction Sites in terms of mechanics. The major difference is that ships in CZ's are absolute bullet sponges. You need something that can throw a lot of damage. If you want to, though, you can stick with your current build and "tag" a bunch of ships in the CZ. Pop them with a few rounds. When they eventually go boop, you'll still get credit for killing them.

The ship versus ship combat is a joke.

I had to use all twelve SCB fighting one lousy Cobra-5(?), then he runs and runs and runs and runs and runs away and have to chase him down for a lousy 25K combat bond.

Don't bother.
