Planet Zoo | Asia Animal Pack | Announcement

This tanuki graphic is amazing!
I'm sure even Japanese fans will be satisfied with it.

Speaking of which, one Japanese fan was wondering whether tanuki and foxes could coexist.
I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out, too.

(Or is it just me, or does it feel like all the Japanese elements are always snow-related...??)

They probably won't outside of sandbox. Red foxes are coded as predators, which always pose some degree of hostility to other species depending on their internal "level" (ex. they'll hunt down chickens and "intimidate" deer).

Well... I think if there is enough food and space, there is a certain possibility... But... I think this is unlikely in a zoo. First of all, there is a certain competition between the two in nature. Secondly, I think the area that a general urban zoo can provide for such small mammals is not enough to meet the minimum standard of not fighting.

@Mjmannella @Cooper_yang

Thank you both for your responses.

I see, so that’s how it’s programmed in the game.
I’m also well aware of the relationship between the two species in the wild.
In fact, I myself believe that the possibility of tanuki and foxes coexisting is quite low.

I apologize if my comment was surprising.

However, there's a reason I still said I was "looking forward to it."
It may sound unbelievable, but at a place called the Kitakitsune Farm in Hokkaido, Japan, foxes and tanuki actually live together!

Given that the game often respects natural behavior, I know the possibility is extremely low.
That said, since the devs have previously made cohabitation between the maned wolf and giant anteater possible, I thought there might be a tiny chance—especially if they happen to be aware of Kitakitsune Farm.

Well, realistically speaking, I imagine it would only ever be something achievable in sandbox mode…

Oh, and here’s a link to the Kitakitsune Farm website.

maned wolves are actually not considered predators in Planet Zoo, so they won't hunt anything and therefore allows them to be housed with other species. This is also the case with giant otters and Cuvier's dwarf caimans.

I wish I was joking about the otters but... 🙃
