Planet Zoo | Asia Animal Pack | Announcement

Guys, that's just the consequence of mapping a complex reality to game/software logic and in this case to something as simple as a true-false boolean. Without context of what that actually means in the game logic it obviously looks weird 😂

Reminds me of the time where we had to integrate with a piece of software in which their original architects forgot to think about the fact that people could go in to the hospital and go back home (for context, the software was for people in elderly care and in those cases a hospital stay did very often not end well); so basically the "Alive" state ended up meaning that they were in the hospital, and "Deceased" meant that they were either deceased or just went back home. There were multiple records of people going from "Alive" back to "Deceased" to "Alive" again, but I can assure you, nobody was performing necromancy on patients at those hospitals 😅

I really hope the Honey Badger is a predator that kills every single thing in its exhibit... I have an unkillable bear and I need to get rid of it

For context: I had a few Rheas that I had to exterminate (I couldn't sell them because they were injured) so I decided to purchase a spectacled bear to deal with them... And it did.
But then I had to kill the bear.
I tried tigers, lions, crocodiles, bigger bears... The immortal bear killed every single one of them.
I need to eliminate him

At this point the bear earned his life

(You could just sell animals in game though 😉)

Thank you both for your responses.

I see, so that’s how it’s programmed in the game.
I’m also well aware of the relationship between the two species in the wild.
In fact, I myself believe that the possibility of tanuki and foxes coexisting is quite low.

I apologize if my comment was surprising.

However, there's a reason I still said I was "looking forward to it."
It may sound unbelievable, but at a place called the Kitakitsune Farm in Hokkaido, Japan, foxes and tanuki actually live together!

Given that the game often respects natural behavior, I know the possibility is extremely low.
That said, since the devs have previously made cohabitation between the maned wolf and giant anteater possible, I thought there might be a tiny chance—especially if they happen to be aware of Kitakitsune Farm.

Well, realistically speaking, I imagine it would only ever be something achievable in sandbox mode…

Oh, and here’s a link to the Kitakitsune Farm website.
This place looks incredible! I will be visiting Japan two separate times hopefully by the end of next year (once for work, once for vacation)... I wish this were closer to Tokyo/Saitama where I'll be staying! I plan to visit multiple zoos around Tokyo that will have each of these species, but this would be incredible to see!

I'm aware that there's a true/false binary at play, but even with the constraints it still just makes more sense for giant otters to be coded as predators than as prey. Giant otters are well known to be formidable hunters that take a variety of game. We they worried that they'd kill land animals like peafowl?
An equally baffling decision was to make the primarily was to make the primarily herbivorous spectacled bears predators even though both sun bears and panda bears are prey animals without anyone complaining.

Without context I'm just not going to judge the decision making here. I share your assumption that it is to let the animals hunt or not; that seems reasonable, but at the same time that same boolean can also be tied to a bunch of other things that we don't know of. It's not at all uncommon that a single boolean is tied to multiple parts within the software.

I've seen plenty of things that looked like a weird choice to me at first but made perfect sense after I gotten the full context, I'm just not going to fall into that trap again, no matter how much "sense" I think my approach makes.

If you have the chance, please go! (I won't tell anyone that I've never been there myself. I'd like to go someday.)
