New ship: Panther Clipper

I do not know about you guys but all I want is information on the ship. Didn't they say they would release more info 2 months ago and haven't. Great we see artwork, consoles and the ship itself in space, but people were told they would be told about internals etc. Looks like yet another let down on a ship they said we would have 9 years ago.
Information is coming in the stream next week, they said that. I agree though that is a month too late. The ED segment on the last stream, even though it introduced Vanguards, felt short. There should have been a minute or three to give us some info. But then again it fits a ships that is coming too late. That's a trend lately. The right time for the Corsair would have been the Powerplay update. The right time for the Panther would have been the Colonization update.

The right time for the Panther would have been the Colonization update.
There's still time because colonisation is still hasn't stabilised and been fully released. They're constantly messing with values and mechanics while it's in their burn the bubble beta phase. If they don't release the clipper with the end of the colonisation test period they're missing the timing but they need the clipper for the end of the beta to help bring the burnt out players back to colonies.

No nearly two months ago they showed us what it looked like and said they would tell us more nearer release, nearly one month ago they told us the next reveal on the PC would be in the Frontier Unlocked which is due next week.

No looks like a case of impatience.

Hi :)

The right time for the Corsair would have been the Powerplay update. The right time for the Panther would have been the Colonization update.

Yeah, I agree, I can't understand the mismatch there. It would have made the transition easily into colonisation plus the reduction in time of material collection and the expanded cargo space marrying quite well with the whole concept.
It's weird (to me) that a specific ship was not automatically in place to better facilitate the build concept of Colonising. One would have thought...but then it does seem to appear these finer points were obviously overlooked for some reasons. Time constraints?...planning that was overlooked by mistake?...not being absolutely sure in what was being created and it's affects?, and perhaps needing the colonising feature actually in general use...up and running so to speak to eventually show up flaws that were obviously partially hidden. 🤷‍♂️

It seems to me there were perhaps thoughts by Frontier dev's that went something like this...;)...(Joking).

'Great teamwork guys!, we've managed to release Colonisation, though wait!...it's in a pretty flakey state as far as building stations go, hmm... let's see what the players come up with...yeah, that will do for now...it will all come out in the wash, eventually. Let's keep it as a beta release indefinitely for now as well, we can iron it out a bit as we go along'. 😊

'Eh what!?,...the players are complaining about the commodity grind and want a bigger cargo capacity ship?, and you're telling me the present ships just don't cut it!? 😱....🤔

'Yeah guv, our top notch cargo trader ships like the T9, Imperial Cutter and some others are under 1000 tons tops, but we've got the Panther Clipper still in the design state guv, so that would do at a pinch I reckon'.😜

'Ok, right! 😌...we'd better drag that Panther Clipper design out of mothballs...is it anywhere near ready yet?....how far have we got with it....&% hell, really?😱...get on it asap!'...

'Why didn't we have Both the Panther and the Colonisation upgrade released at the same time' for &*%$ sake?!' 😡

'Dunno guv, we've been very busy... y'no...with other stuffs and nobody knew there might be problems with the hauling side of things'.

'Okay, when do you think the Panther will be ready for us to release?'

'...Not sure guv, maybe sometime in the summer period?...could be sooner or could be later'

'You're talking like Trump...stop it!...Oh, okay  better late than never...at least let's release some initial artists concepts as a 'press leak' to keep the players subdued,...and....err what? 🧐

'Well, I was just going to say guv...we've got most of the design more or less done...and the players seem pretty happy with what we've done so far now that it's been featured in the livestream...it's just the question of balancing the cargo modules at the moment plus a few other minor things'

'Look...😠...for crying out loud!...just stick 6000 tons capacity in there!, we'll worry about the balancing up later....Jeeze!, what a mess....and where's my coffee!...Hang on a minute!. What's these 'other minor things' you mentioned?', what's all that about?'.

'Um...well...the Panther was also going to be released with a unique automatic mining machine, you remember, like we had in the first games...the MB4...it collects metals and minerals and refines them'.

'Ah yes...I remember...how's that coming along?'

'Errm...well, we've run into a few little problems there now...balancing again...we're worried it might make collecting raw materials off a planets surface automatically and converting it into usable colonisation build commodities too easy, as you know, our main criteria for station builds is to string it out, make it laborious and time consuming, it's always worked in the past for us with other things....sort of'

'Okay ...just concentrate on the Panther for now, the other stuff can be released later, and just remember that when it is released we need to up the price on this ships early access by...let's say...🤔...66,000 arx for the stellar version?...does that sound okay?'

'The players won't like that guv...😯'.

'Oh!...you think so?...ok, let's do that anyway, see how the cookie crumbles :sneaky:, but anyway, in the meantime get those Panther modules sorted out, we need to be ready by the end of this summer period, If you want me for anything else I'll be in my office...and get someone to bring me that damn coffee pronto!...plus a slice of pizza!'

'Oh!...before you go guv, what are we doing about the ship and new feature we've got planned for the Autumn?'

What?...😳...I thought we'd agreed on that?, the new feature was going to be a wormhole to another Galaxy wasn't it?...and the 'new' ship the Andromeda was the means by how you got there...or have the goalposts changed again?'...btw, I see what you did there, the new ship Andromeda was quite an appropriate name as a clue to the new feature, but I digress. Carry on with what you were saying...'

'No guv, we're still on track for that, it's just...well...the Panther Clipper WAS going to be the Andromeda, but now it's been cannibalised for Elite Odyssey we've gotta design a new ship for the new Autumn feature again.'

'Oh, I see, well...can't you use that other ship that's still a concept, you know...that Imperial Explorer whatsit, that would go well with the new feature...the 'Imperial Andromeda', that's got a nice ring to it don't you think?'

'Right guv, I'm on it! ...should we do that as an early access thingy too when the time comes for the Autumn release?'

'Yeah, that's cool ...good thinking, maybe tie it in somehow with that new Carrier we've got planned...the one with the wormhole drive...but don't forget to also increase the arx price accordingly on that carrier too btw....Okay...I'm off to lunch...then the bank...I'm buying one of Star Citizens new ships again and need to see the bank manager for a large loan...cheerio!' :D

Edit...(I might regret posting this )

Jack :)

While I too am anxiously waiting for the PC, it would not be unreasonable to assume that a PC-like ship would not actually be developed until AFTER the ability to colonize became possible in an Elite-like future. (IMHO it is nothing more than impatience which solicits otherwise... ...and I too am impatient!)

"Necessity is the Mother of Invention" and all that...

Its quite often that we find ourselves (in RL) with new opportunities and then having to build the associated paths to optimize their accessibility.

Its really not that much of a challenge to lock down a target system by building an Outpost using currently available ships. Now we are sort of "living" through the associated technical progress to accelerate development. Rome wasn't built in a day...

A static future of Elite is not being handed to us - we are living through it... (albeit highly accelerated)

Look, everyone, including myself, is just gonna have to hurry up and wait. My grand pa told me that when I was little, i took a moment to think about it, then understood what he was teaching me. Impatience doesn't make any sense, just like the saying. It's out of your control. Then you realize it's an imposter emotion, that doesn't have any purpose, use, or make any sense. I do love saying it whenever I feel that way.

I'm not saying anyone here isn't a good sport, trying to state I understand, and trying to give out one of my tools for coping.

As far as speculation as to the timing of release, I could imagine that possibly there was, maybe, a closer knitted time frame to coincide with content and cg releases. The time it takes to create, test, sort out all of the details of how much and what a ship can do, finishing touches, is probably a never ending process. One could just keep on working on something and technically never really be finished to perfection. Coming late to the party can also increase the perception of value a new ship has. You've tried the rest, now try the best sorta penny philosophy.

I have had fun reading most of the posts, other players thoughts, hopes, and dreams. I have enjoyed sharing a few of my own. So not all bad. (y)

Edit for: There's a free retro thargoid bobble head in the store today.

Well, that would have placed the Panther right after the first Thargoid invasion without Titans, when dozens if not hundreds of stations needed repair. That was already kind of a recolonization scenario.

The simple hard truth why we're getting the Panther (or any of the new ships) at all is business necessity at Frontier. ED needed to turn out more of a profit. If all their other ventures over the past 5 years had worked better ED might still be in limbo. But then again that would have also meant a successful Odyssey release and looking at 15-25k concurrent players on Steam alone as we'd be on the third paid expansion by now, not the 5k we're at after the colonization hype has stopped a little.

Why? You'll get the info in a livestream probably.

They only announced it on 30th April livestream. The next livestream was on Vanguards, so I would imagine more info will come in the next livestream at the earliest.

You think we won't be told about the internals etc?

Good grief.
Wonderful quotes.
I loved the Good Grief part as you made it look so special.

We all have to understand that this ship was promised 9 years ago, and some people are sick of waiting. This new major update cannot come soon enough.

It was 10 years 7 months ago, ackshully 😁

When Frontier started selling fully equipped mid-game ships with zero rebuy (T8) they really opened the cash register I think. I'm more than happy to buy/spend the ARX to get my "quick-ship fix". The associated income is good to help keep development (and the game) alive. So, it that regard I think its a very good thing. At least in the near term. I'm poised to purchase a PC as soon as it becomes available. No apologies...

That being said... I think it also cheapens the growth vector for new CMDR's to be able to drop right into mid-game content without ever having to scratch their way up to upgrade their Sidey, taking small missions to pay for the progress, and hop-scotch their way out of the newbie zone(s). HAVING to learn all the basic requirements to attain even the least little bit of progress. There is a lot of content and feel-good achievement which will be missed by new CMDR's because of this. I'm guessing it will cause the long-term player base to atrophy as so many of the new CMDR's will never experience the investment (and reward) required to become fairly fluid within the game. More folks will likely only play this game for a short time (like so many other titles) as they can reach the basis of it so quickly (and then lose interest just as fast). I think this will hurt the game in the long run. (Particularly as many of us long-timers move from Medicare to Medicaid... ;-)

Purely from a selfish perspective, I think the ability to purchase fully kitted ships with ARX is a good thing. However, for the community as a whole, specifically for new CMDR's, I think it may ultimately decrease the "life" of the player base. "Easy Come, Easy Go"....

For me "the colonization hype has stopped a little" once the PC was announced. I got my system fairly well outfitted and had started a Tier 3 Orbital just as something to do long-term (no rush). Once I heard the PC was imminent, I basically stopped offloading my FC (with my Cutter) in anticipation of the more efficient option. No point in grinding the FC offload when a less-grindy option was on the way. I wouldn't have basically halted my colonization effort if the PC wasn't right around the corner...

My guess for compartment space to add to others' speculations:

4 x 8
2 x 6
2 x 5
2 x 4
1 x 3

In other words; 2200t cargo + class 6 sheilds, class 4 FSD booster, as it's going to be super-slow, with a crappy jump range, needs to take alot of knocks and it's base hull mass will likely weigh in at 1350t making the sheild still pretty wimpy even with a Prismatic.

Forget cargo and jump range and all that. The best use of an overlarge ship is as a floating Odyssey party. A bunch of people jump atop the ship either in suits or in SRVs. The ship then carefully takes off and travels under gentle thrust across a planet’s surface. It’s one part party and one part tour bus.

Good grief.

For some of us it was actually a lot earlier than that. People were asking in Gama, and Beta which was over 11 years ago.
Still Good Grief how pathetic of you.

LOL, So are you offering to become the Cruise liner or Party Animal? Can Just imagine a line up of 8 SRV's on top and people partying in a circle. Shame we cannot have glitter balls floating above lol

As long as it fits loosely inside the light blue lines, I'm good. ... it could be a bit wider but who's counting
I expect it will be a bit sluggish maneuvering but I'll take it. GL HF
