New ship: Panther Clipper

I’m pretty sure FU(nlocked) said that it’s going to be cargo racks and fuel tanks only for the “special” cargo slots.

Why anyone would put fuel tanks into them besides establishing SCO distance records, however, I can’t say.
I am sure they said that they were storage so fuel and cargo only.
I couldn't remember... The biggest issue with mining will be the hardpoint placements. If the place is not optimal for mining the bits aren't directed to the cargo bay and will take longer to collect.

Yep, they referred to them as "storage only" slots a few times, for fuel tanks and cargo racks.

It'd be nice if they could be used as normal slots but, by the same token, it'd also be nice if I could bung a shield in a mil-slot.

Yep.

Not sure about using a PC2 as a mining ship but at least it isn't a total non-starter, like the T8 is (due to it's lack of hardpoints).

Never been a big fan of mining ships with huge cargo capacity but the PC2 should allow me to run 20-odd Collectors and have 4x medium + 4x small mining lasers (keeping the 2x large hardpoints for defensive weapons)... IF the hardpoints are in suitable locations.

If not, I suppose it can keep my Corsair company at Jameson Memorial.

Actually, the Corsair is an excellent miner. Where other ships struggle to get into position or stay in position the Corsair is very nimble and with 3 medium mining lasers she melts rocks quickly. I was quit impressed with her in that role.

For me the biggest issue for mining is whether the cargo bay placement will break prospector limpets on launch.
The type-8 had magnificent hardpoint placement (what few it had), but it sucked for mining because it's so finicky and unreliable at successfully launching prospectors 😭

Panther clipper has so much storage that I could at least make up for longer collection times/distances with extra collector limpets, but this beast is going to take a long time time to change speed etc, so if it can't successfully launch prospectors without spending an age getting into (and out of) a safe limpet-launch-speed window, I'll be so sad 😢

I haven't mined much with the T-8, most of what I remember was the frustration that the power distributor would not adequately supply the lasers and the stream of collectables was hard to get to the cargo bay.. It's decent core miner but those stupid arms block your vision.
I honestly don't think I will do much mining with it, it looks like it's a pure hauler, I think the hardpoint locations will preclude the mining aspect.

Honestly, the Corsair makes sure a great miner. It has enough storage for me without making filling it tedious.
I
keep wanting to try the cobra 5 as a core miner, scooping, no collectors. The Keelie is fun to do it this way.

One thing I've noticed: it could be a decent heavy "Starship Enterprise" explorer.

The two current best candidates for that are the Anaconda and the Beluga, both with 12 internal slots (not counting the Anaconda's military slot, which isn't much use for an explorer). But the Panther also has 12 internals (including the two restricted ones, but a cargo rack is actually useful, as is an extra fuel tank for chaining neutron boosts, or for long SCO journeys).

The Beluga is an excellent long term explorer... I am also guessing teh Phanther MK II could be one too.
Love the Beluga, had one as an explorer for a while - did some Stargoid chasing in it. I struggled with heat though - in the end I had to put a G5 low emissions plant in it to make traveling and scooping bearable for me, which also meant some serious power juggling. But I really enjoyed it, and I could bring all the toys I wanted, and it jumped respectable 55 ly.

Not so great for exobiology though :D.

Well, my 2 cents. They better fix the auto docking and un-docking (again) before this ship comes out. My Cutter keeps bumping it's nose on pretty much every auto un-docking launch into the wall above the slot.

Docking, particularly in Open, will be interesting.

Looking at the video of the PC2 traversing through the mailslot suggests it's taking most of the space, so I can see some spicy moments occurring with

  • Bugged NPCs hovering in and around the mailslot without getting exploded by the station
  • Other players without using the DC YOLO'ing through the slot

I might have found a purpose for logging back into the game again finally... obtain Elite rank to regain access to Jameson's, should be pretty entertaining to just sit in dock and watch the chaos unfold.
