Mandalay too good for Exobiology and Exploration

But a 0E shield booster is lighter than a 0D one. As mentioned, shield boosters don't follow the same logic as other modules. Instead, weight increases from E to A.

AHHHH! Now I see what you were saying. I compared OA with OD, never bothering with an OE. And that's kinda screwy because typically an E module is the crap base module that comes with the ship when you buy it. You didn't say, "you want an OE...", so like I said, I never gave OE a thought.

Doesn't follow the same logic? Yep, I can agree with that now!

Yup 0E heavy duty super cap weights only 2 t and gives you a+50% . My go to booster on explorees

Yeah, I can cut the weight in half.

I have two on board, but that's because when I engineered them, it was one for this ship, and one for my other Mandalay. I forgot to leave one of the boosters when I went on this trip.

Actually, I'll drop 4T by going with one booster, and that remaining booster can be cut in half, so from the current 8T total now, to 2T with a single OE Heavy Duty Grade 5 Super Cap.

Thanks for confirming. (y)

You can overwrite the optimal mass manually with 2077.4 tons and you get the Titan-FSD values.

0E boosters with Heavy Duty weigh only 2 tons, so half the mass of the 0D.

Where can I find those numbers for the Titan FSD? How do you know it's 2077.4T?

Current 5A FSD (SCO) G5 (Increased Range/Mass Manager) drive...Optimal Mass is 1894.10T.

Standard 5A FSD (SCO)...Optimal Mass is 1175T.

I entered that Titan FSD number, and unladen went from 77.69Ly to 84.19Ly.

That's a nice bump in range in comparison. I have everything but the Titan drive for two drives. Looks like I'll be making some changes!

I know it because I have several of them (10 or so...) and you can see the value in the modules Info (right tab or in outfitting).

Yes, the increase in jump range is nice, especially with the class 5 in light builds (a heavy Combat Corsair, for example, will gain only 2.5 or 3 LYs).

Imagine that a ship line designed almost 400 years ago in the actual lore of the game, feels outdated compared to a new one. Shocked I say.

Ships can't be "too good". That's not really a thing one needs to be concerned with. How does the Mandalay being "too good" actually negatively affect your game experience?

It doesn't negatively effect my gameplay. I'm a long term explorer, flown pretty much all the usual ships to the far extremes, I guess I never really stuck with the so called 'best' ships.
My two fav ships to explore in have been the Beluga and Python, the later was the only medium ship that could really take everything I wanted but for that I had to sacrifice a little jump range (not that I've ever been hung up on that).
The Mandy is smaller but can pack everything you need, I felt like I had typed in a cheat code!
That's not to say I still don't fly old ships, just been back to Lyra's in my old faithful AspX (i was cheating on her thinking about my new Corsair though ;) ).

The point about the Mandalay being too good is that it’s a huge step above the other ships for Exobiology hunting, thus making it basically the only ship i am now using out in the black.
Before the Mandalay the exploring type ships were pretty close and can easily be switched between, aspX, DaimmondbackX, Python, Krait, etc all preforming similar.

Before heading out I prepared a number of ships for Salad hunting and quickly found that my go to ship is the Mandalay that love and does a fantastic job at,
The other ships are just sitting gathering dust.
My biggest gripe with the Mandalay is the wing spread making it more difficult flying down crevasses and canyons.

By the way…… Just found one system that got me 376 million, and got 2 billion this week. it’s a true gold rush out here.

Mkay, so for some reason I felt compelled to build an exploration Mandalay. I am not sure if I really need one as I really don't explore anymore at this time, but what the heck. So I bought the hull and two optionals I was missing, the rest was pulled from storage. It's still missing a few experimentals (mass manager as the most important), but it's already impressive.

The only real downsizing I did was D-rating the thrusters, mostly for power draw, reducing the PD to 3A because I had it, and stepping down the plant one size; using an armored one, I really don't like overcharging if I don't absolutely need to. Using a 3A OC would gain less than a LY and need a G5 OC.

I am really impressed, as it is it jumps 72 ly fully fueled and with no cargo, adding mass manager, lightweight to the life support and the collector would get her to a bit over 75. That's while bringing almost 890 raw shields and 735 armor. Sounds good for me.

Anyway, this is she. I call it "EV Jimmy Blankinsop" after the greatest mountaineer that ever lived.

Yup. Just finished up an Exo-Bio trip that took a couple of weeks and pocketed 5.5 billion for my trouble.
The Mandalay's balance of speed, handling and SCO performance made it child's-play to zip between bodies and quickly search.

I'd have preferred to do the trip in a Small explorer like the DBX, as landing was the biggest loss of time across the trip, so hopefully we'll get a new Diamondback in the future that can outjump the Cobra MkV.

When Odyssey first came out I tried Exobiology and quickly got bored with 3 needed samples, constantly landing and moving just to complete a sample.
Years later and a unused alt account I thought why not put it out in the black and do some Exobiology now and then.

Well I am now finding Exobiology most enjoyable like a big Easter egg hunt that pays well.
The most interesting part is all the beautiful planet side views with captivating lighting.
Yes some of the planets are similar and can be boring but then I get blown away at times by the lighting and breathtaking views, truly like visiting a foreign world.
I kind of forget about Exobiology and just want to hang out.
Best is this is all done in VR, Quest 3 rocks

I now don’t mind so much about needing 3 samples but would love to collect from different sources at the same time.

It also gives a good incentive to drive around with an SRV, something that one usually doesn't do much. Driving can be fun too, especially if there's a goal to it.

My Exo-Sidey doesn't even have an SRV bay. It's a needless extra layer. The Sidey moves around faster, I can mostly see everything from the cockpit, and it can land on the spot. Why would I even need an SRV for this ?

Because it's fun?
If we had a new SRV with a wide-range bio scanner, or something, not to do the 'collection scans' but to map out the various clusters of species then I would use one. For example, the map could show the 'blue zone' around the species you just collected so that you can quickly drive outside that range to find the next viable sample. Could be particularly useful for navigation on the dark side of a planet which I would typically avoid whenever possible.

As it is, the loss of the ability to do the bio-scan pulse, restrictions on your view, and limited ability to jetpack way up and easily look around to find things more often limits you more so than the extra speed helps.

Because it's fun?
It must be...

No, I'm not into planetary circumnavigation...

Even my 'least active' sightseeing account has:

So it must be fun!
