I sacked my NPC crew years back when they got to elite before I did. Never saw the need to have a replacement.

paid my pilot 19 bill up to now had the sameone since realease
I guess, although the codex suggests nothing like that for combat.

Crew take their tithe from everything, not just combat. If they were paid only when they were active, even a tightwad like me may have kept one on!I guess, although the codex suggests nothing like that for combat.

My naïve assumption was they took a cut of battle profits (active participant or not).

ive made 68 bill up to now.but back quite a while trading gold and silver was amazing,stack 10 x 50 mill mission even more on a long day play,we were all at it i was in a group we all traded and shared,BUT it was nipped at the bud,same as mining.
That's quite something - I'm ashamed to say I lost many, many crew in battle, before they changed the rules so they now survive your 'death'.
No they take their percentage, based on rank and starting level, from every thing whether or not they were on your ship or in the pilot lounge. If you actually use them in combat they take half of the ranking points earned as well, which is why it is best not to use one if you are trying to fast track to Combat Elite.
