BOYCOTT the Panther Clipper to avoid future "Updates"

I respectfully boycott your boycott: -

It's not late access ... it's normal access ... literally everyone gets access to it, in game, at the same time. Soooooooo .... it's the same ED.
It’s late access as the ship (that we’ve already payed for) is available for ARX months earlier. Not the same ED.

Fairer for the customer maybe (at least if you were content with no further development beyond Odyssey), but clearly not sustainable.
There was content after the release of Odyssey before the new ships came in.

Maybe coincidently, but the ARX purchase of ships came in after Frontier got into a financial pickle which I think was after the poor sales of F1 Manager and the unfortunately named Realms of Ruin.

As Ian D points out, the bulk of ED revenue comes from selling the game, not selling the ships. I do tend to take the customer’s point of view, because I’m (or was) a customer 🙂

Aye, but while they may not be generating much revenue directly, they undoubtedly generate continued interest in the game between free content drops and thus contribute to sales of the base game and more specifically, Odyssey. Maybe the sales of the game without ARX early access would be enough to continue this strategy for a while, but I doubt it would be sustainable for very long and it would certainly be a much tougher sell for investors. As a customer, I enjoy playing the game and am happy that it has not been put out to pasture just yet.

Interestingly, the other version of the game, Legacy, has been running for over two years now despite all the incentives given for players to move on. I guess having two versions of the same game running simultaneously is unlikely to double your running costs, but there must be an addiotional cost.

I wonder if Legacy covers its costs or is it piggy backing on the Live game? I doubt even the wizard Ian D could work that out given the available data.

I think buying ARK to keep the game alive, bring ships, new mechanics, etc. seems fine. I think they're releasing great DLC content in good condition. I already said that I've been playing Oddissey quite a bit since launch, and I love it because I haven't had any bugs yet. A major addition would be excellent, aside from ARK... anyway, let's see what surprises they have in store for us. Not about the boycott, because this title, as I always say, conveys something to me that I haven't found in other titles after almost, as they say around here, half a century. Now, it's better if they do it properly, it's welcome. The thing about Hello Games and NMS with big improvements constantly and for free, being a small studio, Is amazing, but It's a shame it's not my favorite artistic style, but I do recognize what they do.

They're being clever because the Arx store not displaying the real world value in local currency and the FOMO aspects for cosmetics are things that have been called out in UK and EU reviews. The CPC Network and BEUC have been pushing for legislation to be enforced and its a good thing for consumers. Like anything to do with regulation it will take time to adjust and I'm sure FDev will comply with any requirements. However, to try and paint FDev as some predatory corporation is like trying to portray Pandas as killer bears.

I have over 9000 hours invested in X4 so can be considered quite the fan. I do think, and have suggested, that FDev take a leaf out of their book with more dlcs. Fdev's issue is they've been quite the opposite of predatory and have not extracted enough money to allow them to deliver regular fresh content, finish the content they've managed to release and resolve long standing bugs. X4 Foundations has had Split Vendetta, Cradle of Humanity, Tides of Avarice, Kingdom End, Timelines and the latest Hyperion Pack dlc since the initial release in 2018. This has allowed them to keep money flowing in for a single player game where they don't have to support a live service. I don't know about the other games but X4 certainly does make you pay and pay more often than ED if you want to get the full experience.
I have no problem with paid dlcs. I wish ED had more. indeed I based my entire value proposition when paying what I did for the game that there WOULD be 4+ paid DLCs. I would be delighted if FD were to announce a new paid dlc coming let's say end of 2026 (or sooner but that seems unlikely unless it's underway which seems highly doubtful. that said they played a blinder with the original elite horizons announcement so maybe they prove me wrong.

A bit over the top don't you think? I am not sure you understand what predatory marketing actually is. Because this isn't it.
This kind of response merely underlines my original point.

Frontier make ample use of FOMO, be that in-game (create a problem, say Colonisation hauling requirements, followed by the solution the PC2, and no doubt followed by high paying hauling CGs post release of the ship) or in their store (artificial scarcity of certain items, limited sales -just- before high priced items such as the PC2 release).

They introduced a fake currency after originally (and fairly) selling cosmetics for real money. Ever wondered why the Arx prices in the store never quite fit with the Arx packages (which come with a permanent bonus the bigger the package size - ah the illusion of a bargain that could be revoked any time), always leaving small-ish leftovers?

Or what about them jacking prices in the store instead of the prices for Arx packages, therefore devaluing already purchased Arx? Or removing popular skins despite originally stating all skins would be available throughout the year?

Designed to prey on individuals with weak financial self-control. If you really think this is not the case then I have a bridge to sell you.

While I agree in principle with much of your post, this bit is in practise not the case at all.
Because of the 'trickle' of Arx that a player gets from gameplay, the issue of having to have the Arx packages in the store match the cost of items is irrelevant, as the difference could easily (with patience) be made up with gameplay Arx.

No, they are selling products to their customers.

For example, I don't have a weak financial self-control - I know perfectly well I'm buying a new fine pixel ship that'll make my hobby, this game, more pleasant. Decent job here, a tenner or two makes no difference, wouldn't be even noticed. So I purchased an ARX bundle for one of my alts too, for a PC there too.

What "weak financial self-control" you see there? I am paying for my fun.

Go with your bridge elsewhere and don't insult people who stabilized their income right.

(Ridiculous example is ridiculous for comedy): Big 'I go into murder alley all the time without being murdered, so there is no problem with other people dying there' energy.

Again ... I'm not sure you understand what predatory marketing is ... because what you just described, isn't it.
