Guide / Tutorial Engineering (ships): Raw, Encoded and Manufactured materials farming guide

Just FYI - brain tree farming using collectors is not working at the moment. The collectors fail every time (yes outside draw distance but within collector range). They seem to destroy themselves on the brain tree even though the trees are not being drawn.
Thank you for the info.

FDevs changed limpet pattern/fly model, when idle they orbit under ship instead of standing still as in the past, seem not the only change.

I am out in the shards locations (HIP 36601) and exactly the same thing is happening - collectors failing - so it is into the SRV for me. Waste of a journey, would have been better driving round the brain trees.

Tried today with every possible distance, angle, graphics quality, even using Horizon (not Odyssey).
Nada.
Even tried to scoop them using my ship. Nope.
A mix of Flak, then SRV seems to be the best approach.

It's actually not bad at all. As long as you take notes of where the next patches are (in directional degrees from the previous patch), shoot the excretions (select them in the Contacts panel!), collect, next...not faster but not so slow and actually less mind dumbing compared to waiting for the limpets to make long round trips.
Now, if only FDev would release a version of the SRV with a lawn mower... :p

ty. I don't need mats right now, but obviously I will and as it changes ..can we just pin this...especially fer the newps?

Better deploy SRV right away, identify what gives the high grade mat (for techtenium, shoot the "phloem excretions", whatever it is).
Just a quick FYI: all "Phloem Excretions" will spawn grade 4 materials exclusively, the specific material depends on the composition of the planet. "Polyporous Growths" spawn grade 2 and 3 materials. You need those for Selenium, because although it is a grade 4 material, it spawns like a grade 2 material.

Brain tree collecting still works, and you don't even need to mess with draw distances; you just have to use the correct sequence:

  1. fly until you're right on top of the trees
  2. rotate the ship so you're pointing directly downward (facing the trees right below you)
  3. put the engine in reverse and go up until 400m or so
  4. blow up the trees with flak
  5. engine reverse up until height is >= 851m
  6. level up the ship (0 inclination i.e. level with the horizon)
  7. launch the limpets
Rinse and repeat for every tree patch. Enjoy.

See this works for the limpet to return one thing, then when it goes back down for more it crashes into the planet or something. Goes down, starts blinking for about 1 second, then dies. Had that happen?

This can (rarely) happen, but it's due to one specific piece of material which is positioned in a particularly bad way and makes the limpet crash. You can recognize it by launching multiple limpets at the same time: one of them will die every round trip, as it selects the "bad piece" to collect. So if e.g. you launch 4 limpets, 3 will return and one dies, then 2 return and one dies etc. until all limpets die.

Best way of dealing with this is to launch at least 4-6 limpets and then "replenish" the one which dies every time you get the expiration message. Granted, after you finish collecting all the materials, you will have to waste all surviving limpets, but it's not like they're expensive. Just fill your cargo with them and go to town.
