New Zorgon Peterson CG

I'm hyped for this. Mostly because at the moment I'm always flying the same ship, a G5-engineered, unshielded hybrid explorer/multi-role Cobra V. And you get to a point where you've tweaked every module, you've completed the build, and there's nothing more to do... and it's disappointing. It has a single ordinary lightweight PD on it at the moment, and I've been looking longingly on EDSY at the mythical focused+lightweight PD that I can't get.

And now I can get it. And based on your description I'm not going to regret it – because for this ship I really need as much PD capability as possible.
What else would you like to be able to do once you've maxed a ship? There will always come a point where you've maxed it, what would you expect then?
That said, I believe this is very much off-topic here.

As Elpapo said above, that's probably the most effective (if not the only one) PD out there... it takes out very quickly also hatch breakers.

Oh no, you're absolutely right. If there was always more to tweak to make it better then we'd be looking at never-ending power creep. Logically I know that, but I actually really enjoy the process of 'levelling up' my ship and when I finally finish it, it can be disappointing that there's no more to do. So this CG coming along and saying hey, your PD could be a little better with this exclusive module, it reignites the excitement and the idea that my ship is something special. Honestly it'd still have that emotional effect even if focused PD wasn't especially useful, but it's a bonus that it is.

Oh yes, Shieldless bulids, are extremly prone to seekers, without any counter for missiles, its just dumb, to use it at open. Its like wearing big sign "shoot me with missiels".

If slap 2 of these, to that cobra V, it will make very, very difficult to be hit with any missile. Range is over 5km on those, while seekers effective range starts from 5.8km.

Of course, packhounds can still somewhat bypass those, but cobra V is faster than packhounds, so remember to take advantage of ship speed, when attacker uses packhounds.

The new CG is offering a (misspelled) Focussed and Lightweight point defense. What is this? I've never seen focused on a point defense. Or is this just a error.
I have one such pre-engineered point defense from the CG years and years ago. Here's the stats:

pointdefense-1-jpg.433241

Double the range and shot speed of a regular point defense, in addition to being lightweight.

Focused is the US spelling, apparently. I learnt somewhere (can't remember where) that they tend not to repeat the final consonant when adding a suffix like er or ed if pronunciation is stressed on the first syllable rather than the second. FOcusing TRAveled LEveling but not words like reFERring deFERring.

(I'm sure this is a generalisation and there will be exceptions...)

But yes, ED has typically used UK spellings... I blame online tools which often ignore the OS language.

I would love these things to take out on foot soldiers and drop their T6 rocket launcher shells... It's so stupid that a group of 3 or 4 on foot soldiers can cut through a 3500MJ +50% all round resistance shield with HANDHELD WEAPONS in about two or three minutes.

It would be so cool approaching a ship with a point defense turret and getting mowed down by a PDT like in PDCs in THE EXPANSE...
Ships should be absolutely feared by on foot players... As it is, if a ship doesn't have seekers or missile racks, it can't harm you.
Cannons... nope... Lasers... nope.. Not even beams? Nope? So no cutting people in half with large beam lasers. Nope...
Multicanons? Nope... Plasma cannons with plasma balls that appear to be about 2m-5m across is size? Nope... Guys can walk right through the splash and come out the other side like a shieldless sidewinder in a blue giant's corona: completely unaffected.

They probably would be if it was a singleplayer game.
Maybe they should be in Elite as well - it's a unique hybrid of singleplayer PvE PvP MMO after all. 😄

I just see no benefit in the way it currently is. What would we lose? Where are all these theorized PvP "sphere of combat" engagements happening? Haven't stumbled upon a single one in all this time.

what is sphere of combat?

Exactly.

The Sphere of Combat was Frontier's marketing speak for Odyssey ground battles where soldiers on foot, SRVs and ships would all fight it out simultaneously, Battlefield style.
Ah, got ya... thanks for the explanation...

So Mr. Braben was thinking like WW2 where everyone; people, vehicles, planes, missiles.. the whole world was involved...

Japan: Bunch of people on foot throwing bottles...
US: Fat Man dropped from a high altitude bomber....

Or let forget armament, let's scale it way doooown to just wheeled vehicles...
So, like the 80s where people were trying to emancipate themselves from an overbearing govt...

China: Bunch of people on foot throwing bottles...
Also China: Tanks go brrrr....

Sphere of combat is a weird man's mid life crisis fantasy.

Perhaps they were thinking that the people on foot had things like Dragon or Stinger rather than just a large sign saying victim.
