ship interiors - will they happen

Just off the top of my head … could make the AFMU only able to 100% repair mechanical items like weapons, thrusters, MRPs, cargo hatch. Etc. other complex electronics repairs could be limited to a lower percentage, 50/75/80% (for example) by AFMU.

Shields+Cells/FSD+booster/computers/scannes and other “high tech” might need manual repairs to get back to 100%.

The last 20% would (say) need the maverick suit and the cutting tool (now upgraded to the multitool) with repair / tractor beam capability could use odyssey assets or purchasable materials or “repair kits” to affect repairs.

The components still work fine even at 50% it’s just a small debuff for an existing mechanic. And they can always be repaired at stations or even by another player using telepresence who DOES have Odyssey.
The problem with any of this is that for people who don't buy the expansion that would all be part of either get their game made worse because they have a less effective AFMU than previously, for no benefit (a message that people have to keep buying expansions or their gameplay will be degraded) or it stays the same as it is now and people who don't buy the expansion have better AFMUs than those that do.

Ship interiors would need to add to gameplay, without making gameplay from the base game/ Horizons/ Odyssey more onerous, otherwise you're just going to get similar complaints as were levelled at engineering. Although even engineering didn't directly make anything from the base game worse.

OR they perhaps simply want to save a slot :coffee:

I really do, quite sincerely, hope that the final Arx (P2W) ship of this year has an interior modelled with the normal FD attention to detail and utility.

It would be an Odyssey exclusive (because walking...) naturally.

97.2% chance that the playerbase will complain that it wasn't what they meant by "Interiors" and that FD are (insert derogatory phrase of choice)...

And 97.2% chance that there will be complaints that it is definitely "Pay to Win" as those without Odyssey won't have the only ship with interiors once it becomes available for credits and would have to buy it for Arx regardless, or buy Odyssey for less than the Arx cost...

You want to know why I liked this post :D ?
Because EVEN IF all you proclaim here were to come true (and this is worst case really [VERY unlikely XD]),
give it ~ 5 to 6 months, and it would be still be a MONUMENTAL SUCCESS for Elite as a whole!

I was quite serious in every aspect of the post I made.
I genuinely hope that ship #4 has interiors, and that they are done to the typical standard.
I'm equally as certain when I commented that it would not be whatever people's dreams.txt imagined it would be, and that they would be vociferous in their opinions of FD being expressed.

Then, at least, that 11 years old video 'promise' would have been kept, failed miserably, and the interiors crowd would then move onto 'big game hunting' or some other distant past promise.

One of the issues with ship interiors as a DLC is the old one of fracturing the player base even more, we already have Horizons (live) without legs and all that goes with it, we have Odyssey (live) with legs and etc, then we would have Ship Interiors (live), the question is could we have Odyssey and Ship Interior players playing together, or would Ship Interiors give them to great and advantage over Odyssey players so we have to set up a third group so the player base in live is now separated into 3 fractions, Horizons, Odyssey and Ship Interiors.

How might one traverse these mythical interiors without perambulation?
Perhaps a series of UI screens?

By the way that split was managed, it certainly didn't give off any impression that it was desirable or what was initially planned either.

Making current gameplay more onerous for people who don't want ship interiors, forcing them to buy it or giving a disadvantage for those that do? That choice?
Not exactly,
rather its a simple choice:
You install an AFMU if you want Auto-Repair (I'd probably STILL use an AFMU even IF we get Ship Repair!)
OR
You install ... idk ... ANYTHING ELSE you might want in that slot XD E.g. more hull-armor while still having the manual-repair option
:D

Now (in case of this being behind a pay-wall) you ofc bring up a viable point:
For ppl that don't have access to ship repair:
THOSE are then disadvantaged right?
Well yes. Even if extremely minimally, the answer is yes and I never disputed that in its theoretical basis.
Just like people that didn't own Horizons were.
Just like people that don't own Odyssey are.
...
It's not pretty but as long as it does not get excessive, its OK.

HOWEVER:
My idea would actually be to have Ship Interiors be a free update XD
And this is not *dream-txt because I (unlike most here) ONLY ask for:
<= 3 rooms accessible via elevator-masked loading-screen (feel free to reuse them in the worst case),
SOME Ship Repair (make it ONLY the powerplant if you really want)
and the ability to decorate these rooms with arx-decorations among others to then gloat :)

This concept would easily be SO CHEAP to produce, that there wouldn't even really be any risk in the first place!

HOWEVER²:
I am of course MORE THAN HAPPY about more than that :D
If that then however results in it becoming payed content, well ... that is not my shot to call, but I gurantee you this:
Maybe you won't, but the 97% will pay.
(Which is also why I am not blind to the very real possibility that FDev will instead go this route. BUT that will still be a BIG net-positive for Elite :D)

I keep saying that if they stopped making such large ships and only focused on small ships or fighters, no one would ask for ship interiors... It's Frontier itself that's obviously the cause of the community's requests. The same goes for the deniers of this feature; their arguments are sometimes quite absurd; they're the ones who fuel these debates.

Tschk, if they hadn't made the game at all, no one would be asking for any features. It's Frontier itself that's obviously the cause of the community's requests.

I see a pretty high probability that Horizonte players will buy a DLS with interiors, I see the same with Odyssey players, it is a common link with the 2 groups of players... The excuse in the role-playing game could be that some have the technology to leave the ship and others don't, but they do have the technology to move with magnetic boots inside your ship.

😂😂 Good answer, but honestly, when you see an anaconda, the first thing that comes to mind is to see inside. With a small hunting ship, you don't even think about it.

I can't see a DLC with interiors NOT requiring the owner to already have Odyssey, I mean what is the point of paying for a DLC you essentially can't use because you don't have legs? The best scenario here is that they roll Horizons into Odyssey...so give everyone a copy of Odyssey, and make the DLC with interiors a separate item, but again that's still fracturing the user base, don't think they would want to do that again, that can't be good for player engagement if some Odyssey players can no longer play with their friends.

What sort of "meaningful" paid DLC (any such -- not just interiors), and/or mode of managing entitlement for it, do any of us envisage, that would not fragment the playerbase? (EDIT: Yes, "Any one that nobody will want to miss out on", obviously, but realistically...)
