Will anyone bother to unlock the Cutter again?

I've been flying the Panther Clipper for a week now and for my money it's the best bulk hauler available. Previously I'd have said that was the Cutter, but in my builds the the Panther hauls 60% more tonnage, and is more maneuverable. Currently the Panther requires Arx to purchase but very soon it'll be available to everyone for credits.

While I see why this is a good thing for a lot of commanders it bums me out a bit. The Cutter had a bit of prestige about it. It was a bit of a status symbol. Before I'd made the commitment to carry mail for weeks for the empire to unlock it, I'd see someone flying one and think "wow they're committed, they earned that ship". I'll still think that when I see one flying, but in reality probably not gonna see too many Cutters flying around anymore. Why would anyone bother? You don't have to do anything extra to have the objectively best hauler in the game anymore.

It probably won't be long and the same thing will happen to the Corvette. With Vanguards on the horizon I can see a new large combat focussed ship being released that will make the Corvette pointless. That's not necessarily a bad thing, having new ships to engineer and play with gives us all something to do and there should definitely be more variety of ships out there.

I'm probably in the minority, but I liked having ships that required more than just credits to buy. I like the idea that if you want the best of the best at something you had to do a little extra. A lot of people are gonna say that the extra we had to do was an unfun grind, and yeah I can see that. With the revamp to Power Play, and the addition of Colonisation there's got to be a way to bring a few ships to the game that require something extra to purchase.

There's a miner coming out. Not sure if it's better but odds are good that it will be but it's medium not large so it might not improve everything. The cutter has style and some people like flying in style the new lakon brick is a brick. There's also the exclusivity that sometimes draws people.

Do you think people will spend the time to unlock the Cutter and actually use itfor the style factor and exclusivity, when there's other ships that do things better? I don't think people will.

I certainly would. It’s the best miner IMO, but maybe the T11 will be better. It’s very good as a large transport that can hold up well in combat. And of course there’s the prestige factor. I would agree that the PC2 is now the king of cargo though.

I haven't looked into it much, but wouldn't the panther make a better big miner considering it's better positioned hard points, better maneuverability, and increased capacity?

Cutter is a large Imperial multipurpose, IMO, never a dedicated hauler. One just can put same 8A Prismatic and 8A DT/DD on Cutter and PCII and see for oneself twice more shields (thanks to shields multiplier value) and almost twice speed. That is setting aside absolutely gorgeous cockpit and exterior.

P.S. That is like to choose between semi-truck and BMW 740 based only on length and price.

I have been thinking about it but have been busy with other things. I will try it at some point. In the meantime there are a couple of videos that have been made about it; check them out.

Apples and oranges honestly. The Cutter is the strongest fighting ship, period, if no holds are barred. It's fast enough to reverski any other ship in the game whereupon it will own with massive shields and massive distro. The corvette is only better if the cutter wants to fight fair, the corvette is totally at the mercy of the cutter's speed (as is every other large ship including hte panther clipper, it's not even a fair fight). Funny part is there are arguably some medium ships that could beat it if flown perfectly, but...

10k shields, that's why people will still buy a cutter, build link below :)

I've a sneaking suspicion old gen ships will, at some point, receive some type of overhauling.

Initially i believed the new specialized cargo racks will be available across more ships than the panther, although the (imo pointless) special optional slot killed that possibility. Re SCO compatibility, I'd assume it's a likely outcome.

I honestly wouldn't even be surprised if fdev did balance tweaks like upgrading core slot sizes here and there as a one-off reason to coax players back to using these ships. I.e. I always found it sad how absolutely redundant small ships became in basically every aspect after the release of the cobra V. Speed, firepower, maneuverability, health all at the same time... It's definitely something that's worth looking at by the balance gods, if ever.

for a long time while earning carrier money, i used my cutter 'El Tigre' for high threat transportation missions.
outfitted with all multicannons, 1 corrosive/highcap, the rest overcharged (a couple incendiary) it makes short work of pirates.
size 8 prismatics i think, bunch of shield boosters all engineered G5. and a pdc
i would let them interdict me then blast them out of the sky
if they try jousting just use reverse thrusters
made tons of money off the bounties and the bonus payouts
that cutter paid for itself 20 times over

it never died not even once. i did get it impounded one time firing at a pirate with ECM going and i killed a cop on accident lol
had to park it in the nextdoor system and turned myself in. but then had to turn the ship in to clear the ship bounty

This. The Cutter is still the best large gank boat/pirate/blockade runner out there. It still has it's used, albeit more niche nowadays.
Only if they milked us enough, which in my case works surprisingly well :ROFLMAO:

I guess FD is re-eveluating the plans after this "new ship update year" and we will propably see more ships, and maybe even more new mechanics, because frankly, it revived the game.

If it isn't the best, whomst would dare to spend Arx on it? The truest test of seeing if people would have loved the Plipper would have been to make it objectively worse than things. But people probably wouldn't have spent cash money on that, then.
