The peaceful traders challenge thread.

I want to challenge myself to play a pacifist/trader in Elite: Dangerous. And that means not getting into trouble, no visiting anarchy systems and flying the straight and narrow so-to-speak... except when wiggling my way out of any interdiction without a fight. Is this possible?

Your thoughts please, I am curious to know what you think.

Not visiting Anarchy systems could be restricting...they're not necessarily anarchic, just...empty...

You could restrict yourself to not visiting stations / outposts based in anarchic systems, that way you don't have to break your own morality rules (;)) when you need to pass through one to get somewhere else...

But otherwise, I like it, set your own rules to play the game and see how it plays out (especially once it meets other players ;) )

magic 8 Ball says 'Maybe...'. ;) I think it could be done, for a while. It depends on how good you are at the interdiction avoidance game/run away. Once you have a larger ship, invest in shields, power plants, and whatever defensive items you can think of, you should be able to cruise anarchy systems...the stress factor would be huge, but doable.

Doing the Trade grind as well....but not pacifist...non aggression principle.

Figure when I can afford it have a 'battlewagon' as well and try to keep it at one of my current trade stops....anyone disrupts my trading get that out and hunt.

It seems more like a moral challenge than a technical one of acquiring better kit. If you have better kit and are more likely to survive / be able to slaughter millions better, what rules should you be bound to (or choose to bind yourself to).

previously got to asp via T6, cobra, hauler and sidey without weapons. have no intention of fighting or killing anything and doubt if these arthritic fingers and slow old brain could anyway. absolutely despising the silly blue circle game with its stoopid pirate talk and refuse to play it. my only defense strategy so far is to switch off my PC everytime it happens.. which kind of works but is pretty hard on the PC and wastes an awful lot of time...

Beware, many consider that "combat logging" and cheating.

Playing the peaceful trader route so far, just hopping between quiet(ish) stations to make money. I hope to get enough cash to fight off any advances soon. I seem to be ok at the avoiding interdiction mini-game, winning 7-1 so far.

Cheers, Phos

The first thing I do upon logging in with a new CMDR in a Sidewinder is remove both lasers and replace scanner with 2 ton cargo rack.

That's 6 tons saved instantly, which means my Sidey's laden range is now the same as the unladen used to be! Unladen range increases greatly as well of course.

When I am trading, I never waste tonnage on guns. Ever. I also do not enjoy the lines in space, so I never use a scanner since the lines do not exist until you have cartography data on a system. I know it makes more money, I don't care.

When I do finally upgrade to a lakon 6 with a decent FSD, I still don't use guns. I save those tons for heat sink, chaff, and shield cell bank, so I can escape if I must.

When I fight, it's in a maxed Cobra built to purpose. When I trade, it's in a cargo ship built to maximize trade profits. To each their own, this is just my personal preference.

So I assume I'm the only one here that's been playing like this since I got access to beta? :D
apart from the anarchy systems, I have no issues with that. other than that I've pretty much been flying the straight arrow line, I usually drop my shields for some cargo racks and just trade, I've actually gotten pretty good at avoiding interdictions.
I have ofcourse bought a secondary ship for a bit of bounty hunting every now and again.

I'm trading too. Not nimble enough to avoid interdiction, thus not getting rid of my shields. Can usually avoid being destroyed and jump away when interdicted.

Sometimes you just have to jump through anarcy systems. Sometimes you don't know they are anarchy systems until you jump there.

Because of this approach, I am thinking that my first upgrade will be a Viper. It has a slightly higher cargo capacity than Sidewinder, but I can still defend myself.

Good idea to start this thread Tommy and I really like the other inputs showing how you could strip down your ship with/without shields weapons etc and thus increasing your other ship stats.

Also if you play this role, and I am tempted to try it myself, maybe you want to added ECM/Chaff defences, strong sheilds, strong hull with no weapons

Or build a ship that can outrun anything as its so light i.e. no shields, lightest hull possible, and no weaps ... like a tootheless millenium falcom :)

really interesting! :)

thx again

No need to skip the anarchy systems, the style is viable as long as you're either good at the interdiction mini-game or escaping after getting interdicted(probably need to fly something agile, as in rule out type-9 ...).

If you do get interdicted, just face the pirate, boost past him and hit SC once you're ~2km away, if he's slow you get to 3km before he turns and then you're out in few seconds.

Even the most maneuverable ships take something like 4+ seconds to do 180 and second or two to accelerate so you should get some distance quite easily ... against NPC's this is pretty foolproof way to escape with the faster trade ships(type-6, cobra, asp, sidey, hauler ...).

Well, well!! I wasn't expecting the plethora of incite this thread has turned into! That's some great advice commanders, I had no idea so many little tricks-of-the-trade have been tested and tweaked. And the group-hug for those being the 'fox' in the fox hunt. It's nice to see that others are up for the chase. Please keep adding to this is you can eh ~Tally-ho!

:D

You can be that if you want, but don't expect others to be the same.

Shok.

This is perfectly possible, and I'm actually forced into this role now, as my new Viper still has the stock FSD, so I had to sell everything not welded to the chassis to get anywhere.

On the up side, it has the same max cargo as a hauler, but is much faster and much tougher.
