Will KS starter ship be purchasable with real money on launch? Would like it so?

I missed out on the KS because I simply didn't know it even existed.

This was what my reason was originally on the old forum, I didnt find out about E: D until after kickstarter and joined just before premium beta.

So made the suggestion maybe the kickstarter ship packages should be made available for extra cost to others up till release.

I thought it would benefit all but did not go down well on forums.

KS backers gambled their money with no guarantee of success (offline as a perfect example). FD have always seemed to try to avoid pay2win scenarios and although KS backers (and Beta with Freagles) get something others don't it is a boost but not a 'win' scenario as everything they get is achievable by other players given time. KS and beta backers have certainly given a lot of time, so perhaps you could consider it as rewarding the gamble that was taken (for KS and to a lesser extent Beta backers) and the time that everyone put in prior to the full wipe(s).

But this announcement about beta backers getting free access to one of five new ships would seem to suggest that access to the other 4 wont be free - and presumably access to all five will be available at a cost to anybody (be that expansion pack or in game debit card payment in a station or however else they choose to implement it)
It would also be logical that in order to get people to pay the ships will have to be better than what you could otherwise get so perhaps the developers are not totally against the idea.

My reading was that they would be purchasable in game with in game credits, not for cash.

And then one given free to beta backers as well as the freagle?

Thats not how I read it personally but I dont know if there is any definitive clarification as yet? I thought perhaps you have to buy them with credits but access to them was via an expansion pack that you had to buy? (but beta backers get access to one of the five free) Id be interested to know if anybody can shed more light on this for me?

They just said you get one of the extra five being added to the game. They never said anything specific about them only being available for cash so it 'should' be safe to assume they are just in game ships as with all of the others. The 'choose one' is just another beta backer bonus but forcing a choice rather than giving you all five. Applying Occam's razor type logic here to assume there is nothing sinister unless they clearly tell us otherwise.

I asked similar in old forum that the kickstarter ship packs could be offered as starter addons for those that missed it.

There was a big uproar from a lot of kickstarter backers that they were there bonuses for backing.

Well I would agree if this was a way to obtain something that is meant to be exclusive

But we are talking stuff that is normally obtainable in game.. So don't see the reason they should be upset about it

They got tee shirts and decals and founders world after all no?

ED did exactly the same thing as SC when they sold tiers with ships included during the kickstarter, the only difference is SC carried on doing it after the KS ended. So if SC is Pay-2-Win then Ed must be as well.

Good point

I think perhaps they will reintroduce it after a while.

After all is good to get more sales, if say you sell starter packs at a premium

I am quite sure there is a market for that..especially because a lot of folks here are way in their 30s so have an income and some cash to spend and what not

It's more that as soon as you let in game stuff that matters (ships or credits) be available for real cash then you straight away start down the pay2win path. Sure you can argue there's nothing to win as such but those that fear the possibility of being blown up by someone that bought their ship are the ones that would disagree.

KS and Beta was a different situation where people invested money in development. In the strictest sense of the word they got to buy their ship but that is not by itself a valid justification to add pay2win type transactions (whether it available in game or not).

"must" is such a strong word...... and HELL NO!

I work, I have a family, I find the time to play, maybe a couple hours a day, if that I think it's fine as it is. I've made 59k Cr since the start of Gamma, and I'm happy about it.

FD will not provide a method of pay-to-win. I don't understand why people keep asking, David Braben has said it'd often enough in interviews, at conventions, and on the forums.

The great thing about ED is, It's very well geared to the casual player, no levels to worry about, all skills are personal of three player's ability. It's not a competition between players, it's competition against your own abilities and skills.

As for the Backer gifts, they're great. KS backers got some additional, great, but you can't buy personal skills.

Even if your have a great ship, of your don't know how to use it's, our haven't developed the skills, or doesn't matter, you'll still get blown out of the stars.

Are you implying KS backers have paid to win earlier?

Because is them that will be fully kitted right away..so your logic is a bit flawed there

I think leveling the playing field is always good

as i just said into another similar thread :

purchasable ships or skins or anything involving an ''admiration of beauty'' must be done ONLY when
the expansion ''walkind around your ship'' (or at least '' a some kind of 3rd person view'') will be available.

Just now the customized skins for me are a no-sense thing
i would consider a puschasable ship like an insult.

Yes. I said that if you use it in the strictest definition then yes, they paid for their ships. Then again, they gambled their money by backing at a different level as they could quite easily have backed at a lower level and just got the standard game.

So yes, KS backers paid. That alone should not justify adding the right for everyone. There is no way to pay to buy anything more than that initial boost.

You aren't talking about levelling the playing field. You are talking about a way to use cash to make it uneven at the very beginning depending on how much cash you have. If you truly wanted to level the playing field you would either:

1 - Want to abolish KS backer rewards
OR
2 - Force everyone to have a wipe whenever a new person started

So which is the better of the three evils?

Well, I for one payed £200 pounds at the shop to play alpha (which by the way was great) and I would see no problem inshedding more money to get ships I only missed because I was late to know about the game

It seems unfair from a fan point of view..and financial too.
