Alpha Scuti & Delta Scuti ExploredA

25k! I've got to forget about trying to find those sweet trade runs and just start exploring systems, though if there is going to be a wipe in a couple of weeks I might be further ahead just trying to do everything I can to learn the in's and out's of the game.

When you're scanning systems, do you just ping them to get the "new astral body" message, or do you stop and do an active scan of each body?

I explored Alpha and Delta Scuti and just returned with the map data.

Each system has a massive star, and several planets, each with many moons. Delta Scuti alone had ~60 bodies. There may be more.

Cartographic data netted nearly 25,000 CR.

Check out how bug Alpha Scuti is at 86 Ls! And Delta Scuti at 25 Ls! Screenshots:

Wow 60 bodies! Saturn has that many alone! So .. big freaaaking deal. (I'm just joking)

@ Colonel: LOL ;) Personally though, while everyone is headed to the Sol system to be a tourist, I'm cleaning up on charting all these unexplored systems. :)

Lance, you get a very minimal sum for simply visiting a previously unvisited system, even if you don't scan anything. However, the more you scan/discover, the more the data is worth. Also, the speed at which you turn in new data (i.e. if you're the first) affects how much the data is worth. Additionally, scanning a complete system gives you a bonus. You can also pick up a detailed surface scanner for more data money value.

That said, when I come into a new system, I immediately do a scan. If all I pick up are belt clusters, I consider it not worth my time and move on to the next system. In my experience, it's much easier to scan planets and moons than belt clusters due to their size/mass, and (I believe) is worth more credits when you turn it in.

My advice for an exploration ship: Go for the fastest/furthest jump you can afford. The first thing I did in my Viper was to remove all weapons, shields, and armor. I only buy those modules which impact my jump distance. I prioritize thrusters, frame shift drive, and power supply which (so far) as allowed me to evade interdicting pirates. I also run twin fuel scoops (this pays for itself quickly in time and money as you can refuel at almost any star system for free.)

It will take you over an hour to scan 60 bodies. To do that with trading is about 3 minutes if you have a hauler which is pretty much free if you trade-in the eagle.

Yep. Scanning systems that big will take a lot of time, and in all honesty it'll be quite a tedious task to complete. Especially with the numerous interdictions you'll have to deal with. This is why my sig changed recently.

Yes, it does take a while to scan a system with that many bodies. That said, I've come across "no-name" systems having 9-12 bodies which gave a roughly equal return when scanned. I suspect that the makeup of the individual system has a great impact on the data value. I've also noticed different stations will offer you different amounts for your map data, so it's worth shopping around for the right buyer sometimes.

If you're like me though, the thrill of discovering what's in a system or visiting famous galactic "landmarks" is worth it, but if you're profit-motivated, it might not be the best career choice.

As far as interdictions go, I noticed that the further out in deep space I got, the fewer space pirates I encountered. When I got about 200 Ly from any known station, I found only one pirate every couple of systems I visited, and if your thrusters and FSD are upgraded, and your mass is light, you can usually evade the interdiction or outrun the enemy ship easily. (I have yet to fire a weapon at anyone - mainly because my ship is unarmed because it saves me mass, allowing me to move faster and jump farther.) I feel more at risk from fuel scooping than I do from the average space pirate. Also, I've had some NPC pirates message me to tell me they were disappointed that I wasn't carrying any cargo and would leave me alone.

The button for the scanner depends on which firegroup you assign it to. I have my scanner on Firegroup 2 so I right-click and hold to activate it.
