I'm starting to feel really guilty for reccomending this to my friends!!

Here one idea

What if players could launch distress beacon from their ship that their friends could target like USS? Then approach it and jump into the same instance to offer assistance.
Also could be so that everyone in the same system can see the beacon so it is not risk free to use.

Atleast i think this could be kinda cool feature, not sure if it has been brought up before

Distress beacon, visible to all. I can imagine how that'll work: You launch the beacon and everyone and their mom will arrive for an easy kill (you). Let's not give people easy kills, eh?

I recommended it to a friend before I'd found out the hard way the game isn't the one described by FD. Fortunately there was a glitch in the purchase procedure when he tried to buy it and I've since told him to hold his fire.

This is starting to go from sad to just plain funny. Half the crowd whining that they don't want the game to turn into an MMO, the other half whining that the game isn't enough of an MMO. How about stop acting like spoiled brats and take the game for what it is? The game is fantastic for what it is. If it's not for you, then there is a VERY simple thing that you can do... Go play something else. May sound harsh but it's the truth, the game is not made to please EVERYONE. The problem with many AAA-titles is that they try to target as large a demographic as they can possibly get, so they make the safest, most boring game ever. Elite targets a specific crowd, and if you're not part of the crowd, then please go play something else.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world

True, that CAN mean that, but it doesn't have to...
Note: They really should have more co-op utilities... I'm just pointing out that MMO doesn't require it.

I have no problem with any of ideas in this thread and many of them I suspect will come in the game.

At the moment the game is in feature freeze stage in it development cycle. Just from some of the comments, I suspect wings or at least a prototype of wing feature will probably arrive in a beta form early next year, certainly a hint or two on some of Brook post that wings were held back at the last minute.

I hope we will get announcement in the next couple of weeks on how the next phase of development will be handle.

As long as they never introduce magical take me to my friend button which transport players halfway across the galaxy and back again.

I'm hoping for random wing generation type mission will also be introduced, so that if there is a need for a team of pilots to intercept and destroy a group of ships, the game will generate a mission for players in the local areas and ask them to meet at a spot together, the first 6 players that meet at that spot will get the mission. Heavy fines impose on those that take advantage of this to grief players and a ban server side from receiving those type of missions again.

I use 6 because that what the voice comes are currently limited to.

I wouldn't see it like that. If I were an opportunist, I'd see a distress beacon as an opportunity to claim the bounty on a pirate and maybe get a cargo drop for my troubles. Killing the interdictee would serve very little purpose; you'd incur a bounty for doing it, and you'd probably have to take on the pirate too before you could claim any cargo spillage.

[edit]That's not to say you couldn't happen upon a victim who's carrying expensive cargo which might make it worthwhile. Just that I think you'd have to be playing pirate (or sociopath) for it to make sense to jump into a distress beacon and take on both parties.[/edit]

Just got a negative rep for defending the game a bit earlier in this thread. The rep comment said something to the effect of "the game sucks and you're stupid for not thinking so!". Honestly, what has this community come to when people get lynched for defending the game we're all here for?

Well personally all my friends read the news articles about "offline-gate" and told me they wouldn't be buying the game now.

So I guess I'll be playing alone... Not that I could have grouped up with them anyways with the random start.

Just feel i need to say that i recomended this game to my best friends & my brother we have pledged or bought into the beta and spent over £400 between us, the plan was to team up & fly together.
If we got into trouble we were going to assist each other in game & be each others wing men, this is currently impossible because most fights start from being interdicted.
How the heck are we supposed to fly to each others aid?????
Where is the multiplayer functionality?
This is not a multiplayer game as far as i can see!
I'm starting to wish i had not reccomended it because i'm permenantly having to make excuses to my buddies for the poor multyplayer functionality.

Sorry if i have upset any die hards but it has to be said i'm totally gutted atm

ED might as well scrap the mmo idea & go for Solo offline if it carries on like this because its unplayable atm for co-op.

Cheers Konig

I am glad. I dont think this game should be played in the fashion u suggest since its not made for platooning. U will have to much of an unfair advantage by ganging up on players in single ships.

This isn't the 80's, people like to Multiplay. The size of the game area should trump any "unfair" nonsense, go find somewhere to play how you want and those who want to "gang up" should be able to if they wish.

I know the original had like one space station per planet etc but for me I want to see loads of space structures around the main space station. How much fun to be evading cops flying through warehouses and construction yards etc but I can wait for this.

I don't necessarily agree with your views on the game but I sympathise with your distress on the rep issue.

The truth is the rep system is pernicious in that it encourages conformity. If we were all wise and good etc then it'd work. (But then we wouldn't need a rep system would we.)

The premiere was a bit confusing when I seen the 2 friends jump in and help the guy with the carrier. I don't think that would be possibly in a real in game situation. But I'm sure FDEV has something in the works for release.

Exactly in the same shoe. At least a dozen (15 to be precise the whole old gang) of me mates was looking to buy it. Now no one. None.
I am alone now.
Ah well. Life goes on I guess.

Questions:

[*] Interdiction is and always was a thing in the Elite universe. Clearly this is how a lot of fights are going to start.

[*] How would you intend to call for help from your friends? (Assuming they're not travelling with you)

Friend setting. When a friend is interdicted, you get a message

[*] How would you expect them to be able to target you?

They hyperjump right next to you, if within range of their jump engine. You are the nav beacon. Can be there in 10 seconds?

[*] How long would you expect it to take for them to turn up to assist?

10 seconds ish, from call to decision, to frameshift charge and jump

[*] If your friends weren't nearby, what would you do?

You're on your own, or general distress call. Requires more comms stuff - maybe can only call to friends?

[*] Would you expect to be able to chat with them in-game if they're outside of the system?

Yes, within limits. What about local cluster chat? I know that breaks some rules of Elite, but there you go. You either dive into MMO to make it more fun or have it alone and sterile.

[*] If so, how would you expect that to work?

what about a comms unit, that can be upgraded? level 1 is same system, level 10 is 10 systems away. Maybe the systems would have hyperspace units whizzing back and forth to send comms FTL.

[*] Would you expect to be able to voice chat or just text?

voice within system, text from without.

[*] Let's assume your friends are out-of-system, some tens of Light Years away.

[*] How would you expect to arrange to meet your friends?

Some kind of nav system - you can plot a course through known systems as waypoints.

[*] How would you expect to be able to find and target them?

make your way from system to system following your waypoints

[*] How would you expect to plot a course to meet them?

galaxy map improvements - navigation from star to star pathfinding. Not hard.

These are some really good ideas.

Going from that, the game should actively bar any ship bigger than mine from interdicting and attacking me.

If they have upgrades it should be downgraded to what I have. Lets totally remove the "Dangerous" moniker as well.

Bah... the level if fanboy defence on this topic of a basic, and I mean basic, modern game functionality is laughable.

The game is billed as a MMO (ha!) that you can play with your friends and explore the galaxy, etc.. etc...

Ah well still a few weeks from launch but come release day and this basic functionality isn't in, the reviews will savage it and rightly so.
