Why has it gotten this bad?

Sorry, but it's really hard to trust them when they cut major design features this close to release, not that the single player thing effects me, but hopefully you see where I'm going...

On the flip side, maybe they deserve a bit more trust because they're willing to make a hard decision at a critical time that allows them to focus on the part of the game that does affect you (and I'm assuming, the majority of players) for the betterment of the game. Bad news is bad news whenever it's delivered.

Offline was never a major design feature. That was also a reason why it was cut. It was just light version of the game for single computer. As turned out, making two games instead of one is really taxing and not that possible.

It's fair enough to be wondering right now what features will make the cut for release, and I think David Braben has pre-empted it somewhat by saying a few times, in a few places, that development will continue after release. So it's safe to assume that it isn't going to be feature complete at release.

If they genuinely can't give any kind of confirmation of features that will be in or out at release, as thing 'x' is reliant on things 'y' and 'z' being ready, then that really needs to be said as well!

It's also worth pointing out that the last thing they will want right now is another storm of madness, so there is probably an air of caution regarding what info is going out to the community. Which would be disappointing but I wouldn't blame them frankly.

So having said all that and having read through everyone's thoughts I'll add my voice to those looking for more from Frontier communication and a bit of community engagement during the run up to release - with the hope that everyone can keep it civil.

If the tone of posts gets vitriolic and nasty, it really is a turn off for anyone to want to engage with a forum!

Hah, this gave me a great idea.

I went to the main refund thread and 'ignored' the group of users who seem to be in active dispute with FD and are stirring up issues in other threads aswell.
All of a sudden, lots of hidden posts and a generally much more pleasent forum experience.

no offense, but I find that a bizarre way of neutering comment you find disagreeable, just don't read them, or the threads? This is what puzzles me the most.
personally I'd find a sanitised version of any forum unappealing.

This is SC using all that cash they have, hiring internet warriors to come here and post negativety ;)

On a serious note though I think it's a sad truth that some people just want to see things fail and take a perverse joy in bashing.
I understand quite a few of the problems members have with the game but the ammount of repeated crying and moaning is beyond belief.
The poisonous mindset that some people have developed is unbelievable, they now seem to have made it their lifes goal to try and damage anything ED.

I wish ED could give them all their money back and tell them all to (insert short word used for a small clump of earth and grass) off, never to let them play the game again.

I think his point was that forums has gone down not due of general dissatisfaction, but just group of people posting threads and keeping them alive. It is not about other opinions, you can find lot of them from other, much more factual and respectable posters. It is about cutting down a noise and discovering that there's actual group of people working together to trash game for unknown reasons.

Amen. +1

Shok.

I think A pole of simply like or dislike would clear this question up!

You're new around these parts so I will put my poll-shaped-pitchfork away :D

(that's a joke btw ... I hates polls though .. too many .. maybe I should create one asking if there are too many .. oh wait, already been done  :D)

So answer is to trash talk game because of that? That's childish.

One man's 'trash talk' is another man's valid criticism. I don't want my money back because i'm an old, easily satisfied elite fan but even so I recognise this game is nowhere near good enough in terms of features or bugs and not even close to what was expected. Braben talked of filling the empty rooms when he's barely slapped a coat of paint on them. This is 1989 gameplay with modern graphics (which I happen to be fine with for the time being but don't expect others should be). If I were a new customer and not an Elite fan I wouldn't buy it and if I wanted my money back regarding the offline debacle and weren't being given it too right I'd make a fuss.

Give anyone they want their money back and be done with it.

Besides - I see just as much trolling and childish behaviour from so called 'fans'.

Indeed there's a fair bit of complaining for the sake of complaining. And Frontier has a fair share of responsibility.

But the "white knighting" of Frontier by some gets to ludicrous extremes:

* A newbie exposing perceived or real flaws being called "whiner" or "cognitively impaired", rather than pointing them towards the bug thread or the helpdesk

* Shutting up articulate, constructive criticism with sentences containing the expressions "it's a beta", "vertical slicing", "works for me, stop the blathering ", "read the frigging DDA", "have faith", etc.

Blaming this mess on a conspiracy of fans of other games is ridiculous and I would politely invite those persons to eat their tin foil hats, along with the platitudes, and one line zingers, that in a different context would have probably been ignored, but have rather contributed to a very definite miasma on this "community".

Of course, the Black Knights out there - self-appointed defenders of people with ample reason to be annoyed and unhappy - should have rather stayed away from making up stuff for the sake of advancing their side "cause".

I do remember a member of this community who claimed to suffer epilepsy to complain about the "camera shake" effect... to eventually become apparent that he was basically talking out of the end used for secretion of his digestive system.

There's been also a fair bit of this last stuff too.

So let me get this right.

All the "whining" (aka people who don't blindly trust FD will deliver what they have initially indicated) are people who are angry about a promised feature is gone and just want to disrupt things?

Maybe the more simple explanation is that there is a good number of people who looks at the communications from FD and can't figure out if the game they really wanted and spend money on, is actually what will be coming? People who, like you, want a really cool game based on the game play form the original Elite games but with modern features.

But no. FD has no involvement or control over what goes on in the community. So it must just be people trying to disrupt things that are making noise.

In some respects it must be encouraging for FD whether posts are for or against. If people weren't bothered with the game they wouldn't be posting at all (excepting the lowest forms of Troll of course). The problem as I see it is that everything is too black and white at the moment, for the game or against it. Personally I have no idea what is going to be released on 16/12, whether I will like it or not, whether it will be enough to make me want to play it, etc, etc.

What I do know is that if I don't want to play the game it has cost me £50 and I will stand the loss. If that happens I will do what I did with one of my now favourite flight sims, Rise of Flight. Instead of getting into such a state that I make an idiot of myself on forums I will shelve the game for a year and try it again. With RoF the game as released compared to what it became over that 12 months and beyond was remarkable. Even if I still don't like ED I am guessing life will go on.

The point is I try to be a 'glass half full' sort of person so I hope the game comes out guns blazing and it monopolises my gaming and game spending but if it doesn't it might later on and if it still doesn't it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things.

Sorry, but this is anonymous public Internet forum. To assume that everyone here want ED truly succeed is nice thought, but very naive.

There are quite a lot of trolls because a) they can b) "my game is ways better than ED" c) if they succeed x will happen and no one will play EVE anymore d) etc. any other reason.

And that without people who feel cause of always online rub them wrong way (corporate control and everything else really), who see Kickstarter/Early Access something bad, who backed "that other game" and feel for some strange reason ED endanger them, and let's end up with people who just love to find guilty party and don't care about small details.

Unfortunately this was bound to happen. Combine this with quite liberal forum moderation policy (and no, mods, I am not disputing policy here :)) and you get what's here.

I think at some stage they might want to only allow people to post if they have a game account.
