Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

I am comparing myself to people who will be paying half of what I paid, and get exactly the same thing as I.
...but they were not part of the beta/gamma and getting "early access".
You could have quite easily paid the same as them.
No, I'm being hit more with driving costs because my car isn't new and doesn't have a brand new 300 mpg engine in it.
Some people pay 0 road tax. Shocking!!!
I'm going to leave this thread I'm afraid as it's going nowhere.

Yes, there are people who pumped thousands into the game, im not comparing myself to them.
Whatevs. There was a product description. You chose to make a purchase. If you didn't like the deal, you shouldn't have spent the money. That's really all there is to it.

Tons of free MMOs out there, and even Pay-once games like guild wars 2 get monthly free expansions without subscription.
There are plenty games that work on a "pay once, we'll make money selling cosmetic extras to pay for it" business model.
The whole "ED has no subscription fee so fork over the cash" argument is completely invalid.
Usually backed by large publishers, with very large player bases, or selling pay-to-win content (which FD has promised not to do). FD is a small publisher, and they will undoubtedly need the cash injection that expansions will bring.

This threads doing well isn't it?
Actually, I thought it was remaining surprisingly civil under the circumstances ;)

I'm just glad not too see.

Fly an Anaconda today for £1,500 pounds or speed into combat with a Cobra Mark V ( £800 )...

Oh yes, exactly.

I jumped in premium Beta and paid 120E to have that pass. And I still think it's a bargain. I thought it was pretty clear and well documented. True, I'm so much in love with the game it's indecent. I'll go on and grab cosmetics and stuff along the way, but one thing for sure, I love that they're having us pay for expansions instead of a monthly fee or on a pay-to-win basis.

buying a ship would be classed as Pay To Win...and from what I gather the chances of this happening are almost next to nothing.

My guess is that when they say we get one for free they mean at zero in game credits. In the same way that they gave out a free Eagle. That, to me, suggests that this is a part of a free to everyone content expansion that will happen later. If the 5 ships where paid DLC then people without the expansion pass would of been promised part of it for free. That just seems odd to me. I also got the impression that the point of the announcement was to add some good news to a newsletter where there was some bad news (no need to stir that up here). The whole point of skins seems to steer away from pay to win. So all in all my guess is 5 ships in free later expansion. When they say one is free for backers they mean free for your pilot.

I just heard an ugly rumour about the possible existence of an expansion pass down the line.

Paraphrasing;
You are to buy an expansion pass in order to be able to land on planets, have FPS fights, etz..
The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

Just how much of this is true? :(
If this doesn't turn out to be complete bullpucky, I'll drop the game right now and cut my loss..
I'm having a hard time believing it though, it would be a bad PR move to ask even more money for an already expensive game.

Not a rumour. You can though play the game without having to purchase these expansions. You'll just be stuck in your pilots seat forever :)

- capital ships owned by players
- first person shooter

And if these are true expansion and not teeny tiny DLCS then id say 30$ tops

I'm almost certain we'll never be able to own\fly capital ships.

I didnt pay £35 though. I paid 60 euros. So yes, that is expensive.

60 euros is about £47.50 which isn't too bad really when you consider the prices of some console games.

To be honest when I saw they announced 5 additional ships and that people with beta access will get free access to one of them I kind of assumed the other 4 would cost real money - I don't know if there has been official clarification but my guess is once the 25 pledged ships are in game (and that may take some time as we have what 13 at the moment?) then pretty shortly after you will see five rather nice ships in the shop and instead of paying £10 for a chrome viper paint job perhaps access to each ship will cost say £5 or £15 for access to them all (though perhaps you then still have to buy them with in game credits as well and the access is what is charged to stop accusations of pay to win)

The number of confirmed player controllable ships in the game is now 30 and not the previously announced 25. Any ship will be bought with in game credits and not real money. The only time we'll have to part with real money is if we want to add things like paint jobs or anything else thats available in the store.

Paying 60 bucks to keep them afloat while helping them patch a game is already pushing it.
In fact, normally these "Early access" games are cheaper than the eventual retail price.
So making early backers pay more than retail and then expecting them to pay for expansions as well is a bit rude imho.

I paid nearly double the retail price to have the honour of being part of their test cattle,
so I'm expecting to get a bit more than people who jump on the wagon after all is already said and done.

Asking people to PAY to Play Alpha and Beta is a bit cheeky and I don't think Frontier should have done it. So did not pledge for that in kickstarter I pledged up to Pirate and am currently fling around as a federation trader. When it became obvious the game was defiantly going to be released i Updated my pledge to life time expansions (something i was not preperd to do at the start).

IF you paid for Alpha or Beta bigger fool you or hello fanboy!! But Alpha and Beta are well known terms for TESTING you knew what you were doing and deserve no refund.

You could have bought the game at less than retail price in the kickstarter so if you paid double the retail price again bigger fool you/hello Fanboy and again should get no refund!

Kickstarter is not like pre ordering you are pledging money on the hope the final product fills you expectations no refund should be given as Frontier have delivered most of what they said they would infact in some cases MORE than they said they would

That is not a news. Expansion pass was offered for sale maybe a year ago. Really don't remember, it has been a long time. Anyway it's a good investment!

It has been said a lot but, yes, the plan all along, from the very beginning, has been that there would be paid for expansions for things like planetary landings. No ambiguity there whatsoever!
I've no objection to this at all provided the core game is well developed and remains central to the experience. I object to overpriced skins but I certainly do not mind paying for huge chunks of new game..
There was, for a short time, a lifetime expansion pass that would get you all future major expansions as an incentive to pay upfront with the risk of paying upfront... This has been discontinued, it may make a return at some point but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm going hint at a word.... see if you can guess what it is....

It begins with 'W'

It's used a lot more in these forums in the past couple of months...

It's very apt in this instance...

I paid it expecting to be treated like a VIP because I backed them before seeing the results.
Instead, It turns out I can just get in line like everybody else who comes in after the release,
just to get in on all those fancy promises that have been made. That is a bum deal.

You are treated like a VIP

I paid 43€ at kickstarter and i am treated like a VIP as i started in a Cobra mkIII and a 1000 credits 1000 credits in cargo
I could be a bounty hunter in an Eagle or a pirate in a Cobra

What douse the pre order or post 16th Dec start with a sidewinder and 100 credits
Mmmm its nice being a kickstarter

Early access games shouldn't cost more than a finished retail game in the first place.
Part of the price you pay is the time you spend shooting bugs for them.

Again, you were told what to expect and future expansions were not part of the Beta access. It was right there in front of your eyes and as clear as day when you purchased Beta access.

IMPORTANT: The Beta edition does NOT include any expansion downloadable content. These can be purchased separately as they become available.

It's regrettable that you don't think privileged access to game builds many months ahead of the official release is worth €20 - €25 extra but there you go.

Your solution of not playing the game is self-defeating though. What exactly is this supposed to achieve?

I'd pay to be able to land on planets, hunt their native life forms, fight inside stations and ships.....sure I'd pay for that.

Beta backers do get expansions free.... Me and my friend paid 100 of our lovely pounds to get beta access and fd also said with that we get fee expansions fo life....
:D:D

Off topic but I do wonder if planetary landings will be any good. I can't shake the impression that it will involve travelling slowly around largely barren planets. Sort of like SC but with mountains. Hopefully this impression turns out to be wrong.

And you pay more for your car, to hopefully have a nicer ride. Thats your return for paying extra.
If you were paying for a limo stretch and driving the same Kia as everybody else, THEN your comparison would match.

guild wars has always charged for expansions.

so youd rather have p2w ships for sale rather then pay for expansions???
