At the moment i'm running GTX480 sli, on water. its starts seriously showing age.
So, having only so much money to spend i must choose - GTX970 or DK2...

Watching people play Elite using dk2 makes me want to get it, but graphics is getting old on my machine...

HELP !!!! :D

Why get a 970? Just get a 660 or 760 and a DK2

i voted DK2, but i must warn you: i didn't read that you have a gtx480

before to get a DK2, for what i know, you should have a very powerful graphic card. imho ofc

Would you be able to use the DK2 with that old graphics card?, I thought you needed a powerful one.

edit - Ninjino'd

My personal call on this is to wait for the commercial release of the rift - it is likely to be cheaper and better than the dev kit version.
You'll also need a decent card to run it so card this year, rift next..

I'm not 100% sure but I think you're going to find out that your old gfx card won't be able to handle DK2. So first you'll probably need to upgrade your graphics card.

I would say upgrade your GPU........ a 480 is going to struggle with actual games on the DK2 anyway, and besides, you can get a CV1 when the time is right.

PS I love my DK2 so its not like I am a VR naysayer :)

Your current card wont do for dk2. Not in ED anyway
You never mentioned cpu, so that new potential 970 may be bottlenecked.
I'd still pick the gpu. I mean you probably do play some other stuff

As others have mentioned. You will need a better card to run DK2. But if that is how often you upgrade hardware, I'd wait with a Rift until they have the actual product done. I have a friend with one, and he says it's great but far from perfect still.

the Oculus is an expensive toy, with reduced image quality, and very limited game support. A video upgrade positively impacts almost everything you do on your system. Easy decision there.

970 is a much better investment , it can last for years but DK2 will soon be replaced by Retail version which will be much better and maybe much cheaper .

I am running a GTX465, and had no problem using a DK2. But this was only for ED, personally I would wait for CV1 and get the graphics card.

It is time for a serious GPU upgrade my friend. The recent shift in console memory has resulted in most ported game requiring much more VRAM, and 4Gigs has now become the standard.

Also, you should wait for the consumer model a oculus, as it will have better resolution, better support, and most likely plug and play, whereas the dev kit requires you to fiddle and such.

Furthermore, a new GPU will provide a better gaming experiences with every single game available, whereas the Oculus is still not widely supported.

You need a new GPU.

Your two 480s in SLI perform similar to my 570s in SLI (and a single GTX 770 btw), which runs ED on the my DK2 excellently and is a superb gaming experience. However, I'd personally recommend the 970, and save ready for the Rift consumer release, the 1080P resolution in the DK2 just isn't quite good enough :/

The 970 is approx 30-40% faster than our SLI setups, and as others have said it'll play other games much better too, whereas Rift support is still rather thin at the moment.
