Erm, ok.

My point was that Elite: Dangerous is a commercial product and the suggestion that they need a donation option is tantamount to suggesting that they will fail.

Only in your opinion. I see it as funding more to come. To help FD expand on new technology and innovations. To boldly and confidently add new ground breaking gameplay and content for the future. I see it as nothing to do with any kind of failure. And like anything you find enjoyable, fund it and support it.

Shok.

It is like a customer asking the supermarkets to have a donation button placed at the beginning of the till's, so they will work faster packing your grocery bags.

No, sorry but that's a terrible comparison. One is a sophisticated and creative project which has never been done before, which is still at an early and somewhat fragile stage, and which you want to help succeed. The other is low-grade manual labor which is performed everywhere and which anyone can replicate without any effort.

Or Apple/Microsoft having a donate button on their website.

"Please give us (a commercial company) money, because our product isn't good enough to sell."

That's how I would interpret it at least.

FD will do just fine...they have almost earned back the development cost for making the game already anyway...and the game isn't even launched officially yet. :)

And like anything you find enjoyable, fund it and support it.

And there are already avenues to do this, namely supporting the game by way of micro-transactions.

The donations stage was essentially the Kickstarter campaign, there was no guarantee of anything back then. Elite: Dangerous is now a commercial product and having donations at this stage is essentially sending the wrong message.

If you want to support the games development then buy skins and encourage others to do the same.

If people want to throw money at FD then sure, why not.

So long as I don't have to pay anything extra than what I have already purchased, I'm happy.

Since you clearly won't be one of the ones to hit the donation button, move out of the way of the masses who want to. I'm really not sure why you're trying to waste time trying to convince others not to do it, when clearly they want to.

Shok.

I repeat: It is not just a game. There may be people totally uninterested for skin or keychain but concerned only the scientific side .... why not allow it, if they want, to make a donation?

It's not about whether I will or won't, I have bought skins and will happily continue to support the development of Elite: Dangerous in this manner.

It's more about how having a donation button will be perceived at this stage of development.

Well, I want a donation button on FD's website and you're right. Funding comes from all kinds of places; many of which don't play it or even look at it. They might like the idea it represents or fun it can give others.

..or are a charity.

Yep.

If it's about a really small team somewhere writing a game from their homes, then sure...a donate button is perfectly fine.

If it's a company that has close to 300 employees across two continents that has been active for more than 20 years while producing many many successful games over the years. A company that even now are working on several other projects besides Elite as we speak then no. A donate button is not ok and would send the wrong message to anyone visiting the site.

This isn't going to happen guys. ;)

Thanks for dictating and deciding that for the rest of us. Again, I'll say it. Since those who jump on here to say no will not be donating. Move aside and let others do it of their own free will. No matter what analogy you use or scenario to stiffle this good idea.

Shok.

If you want to support them, just buy the ship paintjobs, buy copies of the game to your friends, etc. They'll get your money. It's probably even easier for Frontier to handle these purchases than donations…

Personally, I just want to buy more more shiny things to put on (And eventually, hopefully in) my ship. Owwwww, how I love the shiny things!!!!! ;)

I'm not dictating or deciding anything for anyone.

I'm expressing my opinion about the question at hand when I don't agree with what has been written, also know as having a discussion.

This is a discussion forum after all, is it not? ;)

More money != faster development. You only have to look at Star Citizen for evidence of this, they have a huge amount of money yet they're not even at what they themselves would consider an Alpha stage, 2 years on from the initial funding of their Kickstarter campaign.

As Robert Maynard points out, If people want to donate then they can always buy skins from the store even if they have no intention of actually using them in game.

completely agree

Well, I think a donation button is a great idea from my perspective and here's why.

a) I don't want the inconvenience of 'having' to browse a store and perhaps buy something I do not want in order to fund it.
b) If I'm pressed for time, a donation button saves me time.
c) If I had no interest in playing Elite Dangerous but liked the ideas and goals it offers. I can fund it without using the store.
d) being told to use the store and buy for 'others' things doesn't help, and just limits the amount. A donation button offers the chance of unlimited funding.

Shok.

As it was pointed above just buy a copy of game and give it your friend or to a stranger. There is a box copy with minimum qty of 20. Repeat. It doesn't limit anything. Stop trying to squeeze some sense where it is none.
