Fiction Elite Fiction for Children

Hi all,

We were talking to someone on the ED stand at the launch last weekend, looking for a book for a child of about 10-11 to read, and we were told that all the Elite books coming out right now are more targeted at older children (presumably children up to 100).

So, I guess my question is whether this is true? Has anybody written Elite stories that are targeted more at younger children? (or is anyone working on one now).

The current official fiction isn't aimed at young children and one of the Gollancz books is quite racy from what I believe. However, depending on the reading level of the child some of it may be suitable, I think I was 12 when I read the Dark Wheel and even then it was well within my ability. My own story from Tales From The Frontier has no swearing, no graphic violence (lots of ships exploding though), no sex, but still might be a struggle for some younger readers. As far as I know there have been no further word if Frontier are going to allow more official fiction or not. It would certainly be fun to write a story aimed at younger children, but would there be a market for it is perhaps a different question.

I think the current crop of books rates about a '15' on the age scale, in my view. There aren't any that I'm aware of that are specifically targeted towards younger readers - though, as has been pointed out, some of the Anthology stories are probably suitable.

Unfortunately, at this time, no more Elite licenses are forthcoming either.

Cheers,

Drew.

Maybe Docking is Difficult could be suitable for older kids. Mostly Harmless is my favorite of the books I've read so far, but it is definitely not for kids!

I totally agree with this but you could always read a book yourself and then re-read it to your child and leave out or paraphrase certain bits that you feel that they wont understand or are too violent. Starting with the anthology is probably best as the stories are shorter and most do not have time to elaborate on sex and gore etc.

Depending on the age you are targeting - for the really young, you can make your own book, for instance for the under threes there is the alphabet book ...
A is for Asp
B is for Boa
C is for Cobra
...
Etc

Actually I just got an a-z of snakes :)

Speaking of the books, where does one find them?

Try the publisher or amazon or maybe Frontier shop. Fantastic books is probably best but they don't publish all of them (only about half a dozen of them).

Fantastic books sell three versions of ebook, paperback, hardback, signed versions and audiobooks are due to be released soon and I believe that 10% of sales goes to charity.
