This game is great but like games before it it needs time to mature

This isn't another poll or review of the current build. it is simply to point out to the neigh sayers that all games of this type go through continual development and don't always please when first released.

I point you to this review of Eve Online way back in 2003 where that game suffered the same sort of reaction.

My point is that a lot of people have faith in FD making the best space sim ever created just like DB and EB did back in 1984 with the original release but it will take time. Just like Eve has evolved over the last decade so will ED.

Yes it has it's faults, bugs and lacks some feature but that would have always been the case no matter what. All li ask is that players give it a chance to grow before dismissing it out of hand.

Agreed, also the main thing FD need to do is listen to community, see what they like, what they don't like and what they want and then act on it. That will ensure the success of the ED

[edit] Im gonna take a guess give ED 1 to 2 years before it has the same sized player base as Star Citizen (600,000)

is that what SC currently has?

I dont know about that, alot of what I hear on here it would probably be best if they ignored it. :)

My concern isn't with players giving it time to grow. It's with money giving it time to grow.
There is no doubt that E : D could be the start of something very special. I have no doubt that the potential is there, and the DDA together with the planned expansions outline what that might look like.
The thing is just because it could grow in to something amazing doesn't mean it will. There aren't too many games like EVE out there, and there are a lot of games which never delivered on their potential (Vanguard for example, which shut down this year still lacking many of the things people hoped it would launch with.

What's more, EVE was a full on MMO from the outset. Players paid a subscription fee to play the game. It's easy to justify continued development if that keeps players coming back and therefore keeps the money coming. Elite : Dangerous does not have a subscription fee, or any other convincing plan for making money beyond game sales. I don't question the devs commitment to their project but they aren't a charity. It's just not realistic to continue intensive development over a period of years on a product that isn't making any money.

I will give this game every chance but that doesn't mean I'll take it for-granted that everything will magically be ok one day. There are some real concerns that I've yet to see convincingly addressed.

The only sci-fi thing that ever came out of the oven perfectly cooked the first time was Firefly.

And look what happened to that. <dark grumbling>

EVE looks like a great game, but unfortunately I could never get into it. It wasn't the learning curve it was just too much of a time commitment for me, with little enjoyment in the credit grinding and researching to experince the epic battles. Elite on the other hand, you can start of doing anything as soon as you boot up the game for the first time in a very small time frame.

But I seriously can't wait to see the major battles played out in Elite, I have a sense it will be rather mind blowing ;)

But great perspective anyway op. +1 from me for that.

What i view that we have now is a start, the basic premise of what it Elite Dangerous is about , from here on they can fill it in with more of what they want

I have played a few games from beta to release , two notables World of Tanks and Star Trek Online , and both have evolved to something more than the original release was (though STO gameplay is much better than it was the MT madness it now has puts me off playing)

My final judgment for this game wont be on release day but a year from now , do i want to log in and play Y/N?

Eve is a great game, I played it for 3 years straight.

though it, like Elite, only gives out what you yourself put in. if you just stay in one safe set of systems and Mission, Mine, manufacture or trade then it will get very boring very quickly. It's only once you make that bold step to reach out into the dark void and grab at the unknown that it truly rewards you.

Agreed. FD seem to really be struggling to find a reliable revenue-stream for ED, which concerns me for the risk of my PB outlay.

Hence the concern with them releasing a sandbox. Revenue relies on reputation, which relies on marketing such as reviews and word-of-mouth, which rely on having something to do.

Even Frontier had mugshots in the bulletin boards. ED could be more without needing much more effort

If the game is quickly translated into several languages and also a real user manual in several languages, there will be additional buyers. Do not forget that everyone does not speak English in the world

Agree wholeheartedly with the Manual comment. it was part of what made the original Elite so inspiring.

It's much more than you know. It's much more than I know. I just wish we didn't have so many people looking at an unfinished product and howling that all is lost. It doesn't help.
