Can anybody sum up the multiplayer aspect for me?

I have just now heard of this, and I'm very excited. I'm just a bit confused on the half-mmo but also single player aspect and would like some clarification on the specifics. Is there a co-op functionality in the MMO part? How does it actually play out?

As it stands this moment, ED's singleplayer/multiplayer setup is as follows:

1) The game uses 32 player max instances, it is rare to see more than 4-5 actual humans at a time though.

2) The game uses 3 main modes, solo, private and open. Open mode allows you to come across any player in the game, this is the mmo-ish mode. Private group works the same as open, except the only people you can run across are other players in the private group. Solo makes it so you will never encounter another player, but it is still online like the other 2 modes.

3) The game does not have any coop functionality. There are no chat channels and no ability to form a traditional group/party/squad. However the friends list will cause the instancing engine to attempt to put you and your friends in the same instance if possible. As such, you will see your friends at stations, nav beacons and other common points provided you are both in the same spot. The system will not tell you their location or mark them in any special way so coordination must be done via an external program such as TS3.

It is possible to play cooperatively with these limitations. I was mining with a friend in a resource extraction site earlier. Though we both had to travel to the same location manually and coordinate it via TS3, we were able to get to the same location and instance with 100% reliability. This also worked when traveling back to the station. So common sites are not a problem, you can definitely play with friends there in open or private modes. But there are some locations that aren't common such as unidentified signal sources (USS's) and anything involving an interdiction (same idea as drag bubble if you ever played eve though completely different mechanically). These client unique sites do not directly allow for you to play with friends. There is a work around involving a FSD scanner, but it's slow and a pain to use for this purpose.

As for single player, hop into solo and never see another human if you wish. Alternatively, run off into the far side of the galaxy. With around 400 billion systems, it's easy to disappear.

Think "Dark Souls in Space"
Except instead of explicitly being there to ruin your day, people will show up while you are playing; They might mess with you, they might hide from you, they might say "hi".

I expect a bit more in-game multiplayer communication and clan building later on. Currently I just rely on external voice chat with people we meet on the forums. It works fine that way.
There is also in-game chat to friends via text or voice.

except that you can not actually mine together because you can not see each others ore so co op is out of the question.

You can join the same USS and Interdictions if your friend targets your Low Energy FSD Wake, and drops out of Super Cruise when they get close. They WILL be placed in the same instance and location. I've popped into another player's wake to help out when they got interdicted by a pretty bad looking NPC.

Do you need a FSD Scanner for this?

Simple answer: We are all players on the same universe interacting with each other online, you can kill me, or I can kill you... hence MMO. Honestly, that is all that is required to be MMO, anything else is ideas you got from other games to be tools or addition to MMO, but in itself, the term MMO is met just fine..

Now... If you ask what "MMO Tools" are there within the game, well, that is where you might be lacking because many of them haven't been finished yet by FD, and may have to wait for a patch.

Actually ED have an ingame speak and chat system, though you need to hail your comrade, or any other human strangers, when you have him/her selected in your sensors.

Nope. To drop from Super Cruise into the same place as another player, you just need to target the Low Energy FSD Wake, and exit Super Cruise just like you would at a star-port or other point of interest.

Incorrect. The ore capacity of an asteroid is set for each individual player, but the ore chunks that get shot off of it are universal. What this means in practice is I would deplete a roid and either one of us could scoop the ore chunks. My friend would then deplete it a second time on his end, once again with both of us able to scoop the chunks that broke off. Given that I had more practice, I was much faster at the scooping part than him and did most of the scooping of the unrefined stuff. I then abandoned some of what I scooped to give him his share of it.

And yes, the game does include an exceedingly crude communication system. However it's buggy as hell and generally doesn't work. In its current form, it might as well not exist.

Do you have to be friends ingame to do this? maybe my game is bugged, when I tried it didn't work like that.

There are no co-op functionalities in the game yet. If multiplayer gameplay is important to you, I'd wait a couple of months before getting to game. Hopefully (fingers crossed) they will have added some multiplayer playability by then.

Hopefully, we will be seeing all of this come the 16th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gMbLjUjs1w&index=22&list=PL7glm5rbPHKyBbl UEjmm2PFkwJ4ykuz6s

And of course; the social tools needed to make it work!

I also hope we will see the damage models seen on the Anaconda`s here, and on other ships too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg9k7E4ngFw&list=PL7glm5rbPHKysKIiEKt86qas edNyRainK&index=10

To the OP, there really doesn't seem to be much point in the Open group (Open Multiplayer) _right now_ in Gamma phase. Not many grouping / co-op features. No easy way to link-up with a group of other pilots and fly together and stay together in the same instance.

Open (multiplayer) right now the interaction mainly consists of meeting at certain well known populated areas.

It would be alot nicer if we had an easy way to group-up and fly figher escort for a transport, group battles in a conflict zone, etc, but there's no (easy) way to do those things right now.

Correct, but take note that some players (myself included) regularly encounter a bug when trying to follow another player's FSD wake. In my case it prevents me from following a wake created by a CMDR, but it allows me to follow any wake made by a NPC. Other players are able to follow the wake but don't get to see each other in the same instance.

Also, if you get a message saying that a low-energy FSD needs scanning, that is a bug. Scanners are only for high energy wakes:
Note that the wake scanner has no effect on a "LOW ENERGY FSD WAKE"; these wakes simply indicate that a ship recently entered/exited super cruise.

There are Chat channels ,I can talk to people on my friend list ,I can also talk to other pilots in my instance
