Read First Petition to get Lave Radio crew to pronounce 'Diso' correctly.

The planet is described as blue-green - it's the star that's orange. Also since the time of Elite there was extreme deforestation on Lave - the Frontier Gazette describes it as much more bleak by that time, with even the famed Lavean grubworm made extinct *sniff*

Maybe this is the first player event in the E: D universe?

W A R !

Proud Disoans unite to confront the vile Lavians for mocking their planet name!

After continued refusal by Lavian media to take their planet seriously, Disoans have begun a blockade of the feudal planet, famed for it's tree grubs...<click to continue>.

I too would like to suggest W A R as being the only reasonable way to settle this. TO THE LAUNCH POLES, A W A Y!

It's DEESZO! Not Dice-oh or Dizzo or Disso or Deesso. It's a soft S which borders on a Z but doesn't quite hit it.

That's how Mssrs Braben and Brookes pronounce it and that's how I've always pronounced it. So there.

You poor, ignorant fools. And all this stuff about dancing on Diso is all misaligned. It was all a mistake in the original treaty between the remaining worlds of GalCop after it fell. One typo. "And we shall honour all worlds, nations, peoples and species in our region, from Lave to Disco".

You are all wrong. The only correct pronunciation is the Finnish pronunciation of all those names (i.e. the way I pronounced them when I was 12). Drew's description of how Diso should be pronounced is pretty close, but not quite there.

If I get really annoyed by all this, I'll make my own podcast / youtube video of the whole dirty affair and set you all straight.

Diss-o. Like the town in Italy.

And also, because isn't that how you generally split syllables?

Dis/o. Not even sure how people get an "eye" sound. Is it like when people mispronounce "Eye-raq" and "Eye-ran"? Seems bizarre.

I can sort of see "Dee-so" though, like "ca-ree-bee-an" / "ca-rib-ee-an".

Dis/o.

You normally split them starting each syllable with a consonant where possible: Di-so.

Bison --> Dison --> Diso

Makes sense like that.

Miso --> Diso

Makes sense like that too. :D

I believe the first suggestion for in game factions has been thrown out there.

I'm throwing my lot in with the Syllabic Articulators of Diso in the unrest against the oppressive Lave Broadcast Brigade and their propaganda machine. Nay more shall ye diss our proud Deeszo in the pursuit of cheap entertainment!

I hereby refer to Lav-e Radio as "Lavy Chat" and shall flush the offenders out by force!? :p (I'll still be tuning in though...but only because the teamsters insist on their daily fix of Pirate Confessions)

If the correct pronouciation of Diso is this contentious, how in the galaxy are we to agree on the pronouciation of Xeququti?
War?

War?

Going by the spelling I would guess that Xeququti was named by the space faring Aztecs. So all we need to do is find them and ask them. Shouldn't be too hard.

Then again war might be easier, lets do that then.

As is Diso.

Anyway, we live in a world where people make up their own pronunciation for words that actually exist - in Nottinghamhshire there's a "village" called Gotham - 99% of the world would pronounce it in the same way as Batman's hometown, but natives call it "goat-ham". Go figure.

American pronunciation of Edinburgh and Loughborough bring tears to the eye. Loughborough is my favourite - I actually heard an American pronounce it "Loog-bur-oog". Crazy.

So why can't there be alternative pronunciations of Diso? Maybe there are different dialects across the planet and they all have their own inflection.

I stand by my chosen pronunciation only because it's the same way I've heard official FD bods pronounce. It's only coincidence that it's the same way I've always pronounced it, and if FD had pronounced it differently I'd bow to their superiority.

I used to laugh at how the English pronounce Irish placenames until I went to Wales. Oh, the shame at trying to pronounce Welsh names... :(

Best tip I can give you...work up a lot of phlegm before trying. Wherever you see "LL" in a word, use your phlegm. :)

My Dad was Welsh, and I spent many a holiday in South Wales. I have no problem as an English person pronouncing Welsh words and names.

As a party piece, I will quite happily (at #LaveCon) pronounce this Welsh village name for your general amusement
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
(that really is a genuine village in Wales)
